Let's face it, I cannot type paragraph after paragraph supporting Notre Dame's cause, as Mike Brey's team enters the Garden a disappointing 17-13 on the year.
Still, ND gets a chance to make amends, and they couldn't ask for a better 1st round matchup, as Rutgers comes into this one sporting just 2 straight up wins their last 19 games. True, the Scarlet Knights did cover in a 5-point loss at South Bend late in the season, but Rutgers has scored just 40, and 45 points in their last 2 games.
If Notre Dame heats up from the perimeter, they turn this one into a rout. I am counting on that to happen.
The Irish need to go deep in this tournament to erase their disappointing regular season, and tonight is the start of that run.
Lay the wood, as Notre Dame gets a much-needed blowout win, and cover.
10 DIMER - CLEVELAND STATE VIKINGS
Win or lose, Butler will be in the Big Dance, as the Bulldogs own a Top-20 ranking coming into this one. Not so sure the same can be said for the Vikings who are a decent 24-10 mark this year, but not the same notariety as tonight's opponent.
Cleveland State has played Butler tough of late, as the Vikes have lost the last 4, but the margins are just; 2, 2, 15, & 5.
These schools just played on February 28th at Butler, and the Bulldogs escaped with that 58-56 win, but no cover as the 7-point fave. As you can see the Vikings have been knocking on Butler's door of late, and tonight the G-Man would not be surprised to see them kick that door in.
The fact we are getting a few baskets makes it that much better.
Take the Vikings plus the points.

Rutgers vs. Notre Dame
Play; Rutgers +11
In there only match up this year Rutgers gave the Irish a battle and had a chance to win it late but losing 70-65 in South Bend. Neither team have been good this year against the spread with Rutgers 11-11 and Notre Dame was one of the worst in college basketball at 8-16.

Notre Dame the last two years have been absolutely the worst team in college basketball against the spread when leaving South Bend, IN. Notre Dame will win but just as they have done all year they can't cover large spreads due to the poor defense they play. Enjoy this winner SCORE ND 71 - RUT 66
The Under is 26-12 in Hoyas last 38 games as a favorite of 0.5-6.5 and 5-1 in their last 6 vs. a team with a losing S.U. record, while the Under is 22-7-1 in Red Storm last 30 vs. Big East and 8-2 in their last 10 games as an underdog of 0.5-6.5. The last 5 meeting in this series have all gone under the total, with an average of 114.4 ppg being scored. In the last meeting between these two teams (a week ago) they needed OT to decide the game, but still only put up 115 points. The Hoya's offnes has struggled down the stretch as they have aveaged just 58.8 ppg in their last 5 games, while their last 3 games have averaged just 104.3 ppg. St John's offense has also struggled down the stretch as they have put up just 60.2 pg in their last 9 games. I just don't see how this game will go Over the total.
The Akron Zips are an outstanding 18-7 ATS when playing on Tuesdays, and they are a very solid 25-10 ATS when playing a team with a losing record the last three years while the Toledo Rockets are a terrible 6-18 ATS in the role of an underdog this year, and they are a terrible 3-8 ATS when playing a team with a winning record this year. We look for the Akron Zips to roll over the Toledo Rockets for the Tournament ATS Win & Cover tonight.
NCAAB: Georgetown Hoyas at St Johns Red Storm - Under 122.5 -110
Game Date: 3/10/2009
Note: With this tournament being played at Madison Square Garden, this is, in effect sort of a Home Game for the Red Storm. That is good for our cause with St Johns playing much better D here in the Big Apple. So good, that they have a 12-6 overall record, but more importantly, 9-3 UNDER the mark. They are a curious team and have shown spurts of goodness throughout the year. They did give the Hoyas all they wanted about a week ago in a 59-55 Overtime Win, a game that featured just 102 Regulation Time Points. That contest was the fifth time in a row that a Georgetown/St John game ended below the posted total that Vegas put out. I can't expect anything other than that type of activity going on today again with this being Tournament Time, and a Georgetown Squad in town that features a pace rating of 281 in this land. Both Squads play very good defense with the #18 and #74 rated D squads out of 341 Division 1A Schools. Recent Play shows that the Hoyas have not scored into the 60's their last 4 times on a court. The Johnnies have not done the same their last 3 of 4 times on a court. Shot Totals for Hoya Contests have been very low as well, often not getting even close to the 100 mark. With 2 Schools who would rather play halfcourt style of play, the venue we are at, and this being the Big East Tournament, this play qualifies for No-Brainer. That works out well for me since I like to save my brain for other activities. I would play this one down to 118
Cleveland State vs. Butler Total
120 un-110
The Horizon League tournament championship will be decided tonight as top seed and defending tourney champion Butler, faces Cleveland State. For CSU, they face a must win situation. They need a victory to get their ticket punched for the “Big Dance” while the Bulldogs, with an RPI in the top 20, are expected to draw an at-large invite to the NCAA tournament regardless of whether it beats the Vikings. Butler swept the season series, but both games went right down to the wire. Butler won at Cleveland State by two and then held on at home for a four point victory.
If you’re looking for a motivation angle for Butler consider that this team was picked to finish fifth in the Horizon League. That was probably a bit generous given that the team started three freshmen. But Bulldogs coach Brad Stevens has guided this young team to a regular season title and are one victory from a tournament title. Don’t look for a letdown tonight from the “Dogs. In fact, it will probably be just the opposite. Look for Butler to ratchet up its defensive intensity for this one.
Both series meetings this season played to the UNDER. Butler is 5th in the nation in points allowed (57.4 ppg) and in field-goal percentage allowed (38%). With the stakes even higher tonight, nerves could play a part early. But the deciding factor will be defense. And that ball is definitely in Butlers court
