**9** A-10 TOURNEY GAME OF THE YEAR *6-0* It’s been a disappointing season for Massachusetts and seeing its reaction on Saturday after defeating Rhode Island, it will be tough to get back up. The Minutemen won on a last second layup, spoiling senior day for the Rams and it looked as though they have just won the conference as opposed to improving its record to just 7-9. That is one of the reasons to go against them but the big factor is matchups. The Minutemen have struggled against the more athletic teams this season in the Atlantic Ten and that includes Duquesne who defeated the Minutemen by 17 points in Amherst in the lone regular season meeting. The Dukes had a shot of a first round bye with a win on Saturday again Dayton but the Flyers were able to protect their very tough home court with a relatively easy win. This team is athletic enough to make a big run in this tournament and the 9-7 record in the conference could have been a lot better. Five of the Dukes losses came by five points or fewer. They finished 3-5 in road conference games but come in with two wins in their last three games away from home so winning away from Pittsburgh is not a problem. The line is definitely in our favor here knowing Massachusetts is just 1-7 ATS this season when the line is between +3 and -3. Duquesne has been shooting the ball very well of late and it is 9-2 ATS in its last 11 games following three straight contests with a shooting effort of 47 percent or better. The Dukes continue that again tonight and once again run away from the Minutemen. 9* Duquesne Dukes

                4* #626 MARQUETTE/ST. JOHN?S Under

We have only managed a 1-2 so far in our Marquette Under sequences
since Dominic James had to don street clothes, but it did not have to
be that way ? Saturday?s game vs. Syracuse was not even close to the
Total in regulation before the overtime period proved to be too much.
But as those silver linings often do, it leaves us with excellent
value to come back in one more time.

Neither team will be making any attempts to push tempo here, the
favored Golden Eagles because they lack the depth to do it (in the
three games since James was injured Jerel McNeal has played all 125
minutes, Wesley Matthews 124 of the 125, and Lazar Hayward 107),
especially with the knowledge that winning here means a Thursday
showdown vs. Villanova; and the RedStorm because they just do not
have the players to make any kind of attempts at upping the tempo. So
in a game in which the underdog slows it down early to try to hang in
the game, and the favorite begins icing it much earlier in the second
half than usual because of their depth issues, tempo is a non-issue.

That leaves this game up to offensive efficiency, and we do not
expect to see much of it. Marquette has been exploited by bigger
teams because of a lack of size around the basket but St. John?s
rarely gets anything from the offensive pivot, and Norm Roberts can
also sit back in a zone and force McNeal and Matthews to hit over the
top, instead of slashing to the basket. It is going to make for some
ugly forays, but ultimately they look just fine to our eyes.

                4* #641 COLORADO over TEXAS

Usually when we see an underdog of this big in the first round of a
conference tourney we are dealing with either a mutt that has no hope
of competing, or a dominating favorite that can name the score. We do
not have either element in this one, and in a game in which the pace
will be awfully slow, that means outstanding value.

A young Colorado team lacked the size or experience to win games in
the Big 12 this season but the Buffaloes never stopped competing as
they learned the intricacies of Jeff Bzdelik?s system, except for a
couple of games late in the schedule when starting point guard Nate
Tomlinson was sidelined. But note that they are on a 10-2 ATS run in
the last 12 games that Tomlinson played, with none of the defeats
coming by more than this pointspread. That span includes a bitter
overtime defeat in Boulder vs. these Longhorns that sets the mood for
                this afternoon.

There have been two head-to-heads between Bzdelik and Rick Barnes
since the former took over at Colorado, and both have been ?white
knucklers? (we miss Al McGuire even more at tourney time). In losing
69-67 at Austin LY, and then going to overtime at home this season,
the Buffaloes beat the spread by a combined 27 points, showing the
X?s and O?s issues that this favorite has. It is one thing for Texas
to get enough possessions into the game to climb this pointspread
mountain, and another matter entirely to have the efficiency to turn
those possessions into something. That is something that they have
not done this season. In stumbling to a 5-6 close-out over the last
11 games they simply are what they are ? a good, but not great, team.

The Longhorns do not have the kind of depth to wear an opponent down,
and do not extend their defense to force pace (only 201 turnovers
generated in 16 conference games). They are also an easy team to
defend tactically, with zones the order of the day since only A. J.
Abrams can score from beyond the arc. And while the ball-handling
problems at the point were solved with the insertion of Dogus Balbay,
he makes them even easier to zone ? in 414 Big 12 minutes he did not
attempt a single three-point shot, a mind-boggling number. They are
physical enough up front to grind out a win here, but not to get over
this spread, and that is something that they are not looking to do
anyway. Because they are playing a day earlier than usual in this
bracket it also means that it will take a lot of energy to cut the
nets down later, and that has Barnes milking the clock late instead
                of extending a lead.

                          Docs**** NBA's picks
                          3-Unit Play #601 Take New Orleans/Washington UNDER 193 (7 p.m. EST, Wednesday)

Five of the last six meetings have gone under. The Wizards have had two-straight games over 100 points but both of those were against up-tempo teams. We just don’t see them having great scoring nights for three straight games, especially against one of the top defenses in the NBA. This team struggles overall offensively and is one of the worst scoring teams in the league. New Orleans has been playing incredible defense, holding their last seven opponents to an average of 91 PPG and no team has surpassed 96 during that span. Even though the Wizards defense isn’t great, they have held four of their last seven under 100 and they have been decent in that aspect lately with only one real bad defensive game against Dallas.

                          5-Unit Play #613 Take Memphis -2 ½ Over Minnesota (8 p.m. EST, Wednesday)

Both of these teams are terrible but we think Memphis is a team that will be on an upswing to end the season while it seems like the bottom has fallen out on this Minnesota club. Tonight the Griz get Rudy Gay, one of their best players, back while Minnesota will be missing one of their best, Randy Foye. Minnesota was playing their best basketball before the All-Star Break until Al Jefferson went down and now without Foye we don’t think this team has a clutch guy who can put this team over the top tonight. For the bookies to make a favorite of a team that has won only four games all season has to tell you something. We see the Grizzlies getting a big win tonight and don’t think this one will even be close. Memphis is 11-5 ATS in the last 16 meetings.

3-Unit Play #617 Take Oklahoma City +14 Over Denver (9 p.m. EST, Wednesday)

The Thunder are banged up right now but we just think that this team has a lot of heart and competes night in and night out no matter whom is on the court. This team is 12-3 ATS this season as an underdog of more than 11 points. Denver has lost five of their last six overall and the Thunder have won five of their last six with Kevin Durant out that whole stretch and missing their No. 2 guy, Jeff Green, who should return tonight. Oklahoma City has covered three straight in this series and we think they will keep it close again tonight.

Last season the Titans were a very up-tempo team and this season they have slowed it down some averaging almost 8 fewer points per game. Both the previous meetings between these teams were slower tempo games and I would expect the same kind of game tonight. Neither one of these teams shoots it that well when playing each other this season. Both the coaches and players are expecting another slug fest that probably goes down to the wire as each of the previous games played out.
