    3-17-09

    CRAIG TRAPP TOP PLAY

Don't miss this one BOS lost last game at MIL after being favored. Really need a bounce back game to help there chances to have the best record in the Eastern Conf. Check out trends below

    Team records:
    Boston: 50-17 SU, 34-33 ATS
    Chicago: 30-37 SU, 34-32-1 ATS

    Trends to consider:

Boston is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games when playing Chicago

Boston is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games when playing Chicago

The total has gone UNDER in 4 of Boston's last 5 games when playing on the road against Chicago

Boston is 12-4 SU in its last 16 games on the road

Chicago is 5-0 SU in its last 5 games at home

Chicago is 5-0 ATS in its last 5 games at home

Chicago is 5-1 ATS in its last 6 games

CHI has been playing much better but they have not played the cream of the crop well all year. BOS might get KJ back tonight but either way they really need a win and will play extra motivated. SCORE: BOS 96 - CHI 89

    Line: New Jersey(-134)
Rating: Guaranteed 50 Unit NHL Mismatch
In this contest, my NHL Expert is on the New Jersey Devils.

These two teams come into this game headed in opposite directions. Chicago is coming back down to earth after a torrid start to the season. They have now lost four of their last five and seven of their last 10. The high-flying New Jersey Devils are headed in the opposite direction as they have now won three straight and seven of eight and an even more impressive 21 of their last 26. History is about to be made tonight as well as Devils' goalie Martin Brodeur is looking to break Patrick Roy's record of All-Time Wins! Take the Devils in this one.

      Karl Garrett

      20 DIMER - ST. MARY'S GAELS.....10 DIMER - RHODE ISLAND RAMS
      20 DIMER - ST. MARY'S GAELS

Well to hear it on the television, the Gaels were shafted out of the Big Dance. I am not so sure, as the loss of Mills really let the air out of St. Mary's chances to cop an at-large bid. So what do you do now?

Well, you show the tourney committee they were wrong to leave you out of the field-of-65, and you go out and take care of business tonight on your home floor.

I expect the energy level to be sky-high from the home crowd, and I expect the Gaels to eventually pull away from the Cougars.

Make no mistake, Washington State is a solid team, and they are likely to hang around for a long spell in this game, but in the end, the Gaels will win this one by double-digits.

The Cougars did have a nice little flurry of wins, and covers near the end of the season, but still wound up on the short side in 7 of their final 12 games straight up. The Gaels lone loss in their last 8 games came in the WCC championship game against Gonzaga, and the Gaels did cover ALL 3 tries in that span as a single digit favorite. This is a price that is right up St. Mary's alley, and I expect them to cover the impost.

10 DIMER - RHODE ISLAND RAMS

I believe the Rams can win tonight's game outright, but am glad to be getting a few points in this one.

URI played them close down the stretch, as their last 4 games were decided by, 2, 2, 1, and 4-points! Expect this one to be close as well.

Niagara came within 40 minutes of an automatic ticket to the big show, and while I am sure they will have a rabid home crowd rooting them on, I am not so sure they will be able to distance themselves from this A-10 rep.

Rhode Island went a solid 8-6-2 against the spread on the road this season, and were on a 6-game winning streak prior to their final 2 games which both ended in close losses.

I say take the points with the Rams tonight.
      Today's Complimentary Selection

G-Man on a 5-2 comp play run coming into Tuesday's action.

Take Davidson plus the points at South Carolina in the NIT.

Both teams had hoped to be playing in the Big Dance, but saw their bids fall short this go-round.

Davidson at least closed with straight up wins in 4 of their last 5, while South Carolina could muster just one win over their final 4 games, and just 3 straight up wins in their last 7.

The Gamecocks limped to the finish line with a money-burning 2-6-1 spread run their last 9, and playing at home hasn't been much better for South Carolina either, as they are just 7-19-1 their last 27 in Columbia.

Normally playing at home in the NIT is an advantage, but with Davidson being close in proximity, and the Gamecocks not exactly playing their best ball of the season right now, the G-Man will take any points they are giving.

Wildcats the call in this one.

      3? DAVIDSON
      (on a 1? to 5? basis)

          3 UNIT PLAY

PENN STATE -6 over George Mason

The Patriots are 0-5 ATS in their last 5 road games, while the Nittany Lions are 9-3-1 ATS in their last 13 games following a ATS loss. George Mason has a fine year in the CAA as they were 22-10 overall and 15-6 in the conference. The Patriots were a solid home team this year (14-0), but on the road they went just 6-9, including just 2-4 in their non-conf road games. Some of their road games have reall been bad as they lost to Div 2 schools Liberty and Hampton away from home, while they needed OT to win at Vermont. The Patriots did win their first 2 games of the CAA tourney, but they were blownout in the championship game vs VCU, which is a team with the same talent level as the Lions. Penn State is a team that has been very solid at home, where they are 15-3 and have outscored their opponents by 8.7 ppg. Penn State has gone 7-1 and have outscored their opponents by 17 ppg. Penn state has a llowed just 58.4 ppg at home and will now be facing a George Mason squad that has had big troubles scoring down the stretch, as they have averaged just 56.1 ppg in their last 7 games. George Mason's defense has been tough this year, but the Nitany Lions have averaged 67 ppg on their home floor. Penn State should be in the big dance as they have had some impressive wins this year, so I look for them to take it out on a Patriots squad that has had some puzzling losses vs very weak teams, plus with their inabilty to score lately I just don't see them being able to put enopugh points on the board to keep this one close. Penn State by double digits here.

          2 UNIT PLAY

          NOTRE DAME -5.5 over UAB

The Blazers are 5-12 ATS in their last 17 games vs. a team with a winning S.U. record and 2-7 ATS in their last 9 games as a road underdog, while the Fighting Irish are 11-5 ATS in their last 16 games as a favorite of 0.5-6.5. UAB has been a tough team at home this year, but on the road it has been a different story. The Blazers are just 9-10 when playing away from home this year overall, including just 5-10 in their last 15 road games and they have dropped their last 5 non-conference games when playing away from home. Now they have to travel to play an Irish tream that has been a very solid team at home this year. Notre Dame comes in with a 12-3 mark at home and have outscored their opponents by 13.9 ppg on their home floor..Notre Dame has won 31 straight non-conf home games, including all 6 this year and they have outscored this years opponents by 28.5 ppg. The Irish had a rough season in the Big East, but playing in that conference can only make them strong for the NIT. They are clearly the more talented team and are playing at home, plus they are happy to be still playing, even though it's not in the Big Dance. The Irish should win this one easily. Besides I couldn't not make a pick on my Irish on St Patty's day, right? Just Kidding. I really feel this is a good spot for them to get an easy win.

              3/17/2009
              7:05:00 PM Sacramento Kings (+12)
              over ATLANTA HAWKS
Scott Rickenbach’s NBA 2* (Top Play) Sacramento Kings (+) @ Atlanta @ 7:05 PM ET – This looks like the perfect ‘trap game’ for the Hawks and, while the Kings may not win this game outright, Sacramento certainly will have plenty of opportunity to ‘hang around’ in this one! The Kings, contrary to what their ugly record would lead you to believe, have actually done a good job of ‘hanging around’ in games recently. In their last 9 games – a stretch where the Kings went just 2-7 – Sacramento only lost one game by a margin greater than 8 points. Tonight, on Tuesday, the Kings are catching about a dozen points against a Hawks team that easily could under-estimate them. After all, Sacramento is 0-26 against the Eastern Conference. It’s an amazing run of futility as no team in the NBA has ever gone winless against the other conference. The Kings are aware of how bad things have been and this is a big part of the reason they’ve been so competitive lately. They’ve proven that they’re determined to get a win on this road trip to the East. Tonight, believe it or not, could prove to be the perfect spot to do just that! Atlanta is on a five game winning streak but all five victories have come against teams that are either in playoff position or are battling for playoff position. Tonight it will be tough for the Hawks to maintain their intensity against a team that is an ugly 14-52 on the season. The key with the Kings is they have some scorers like Kevin Martin that are capable of single-handedly keeping them in games late. The return of point guard Beno Udrih is also big. He had missed 7 games with a sprained ankle before coming back against Washington on Sunday. In that game Udrih scored 10 points and had 7 assists as he came off the bench for the first time this season. In their first match-up with Atlanta this season, the Kings only lost by 5 and Udrih had 18 points. In his other two games against Atlanta in his career, Udrih is averaging 21.5 points per game. While the Kings are getting healthier it is likely that the Hawks will still be without Marvin Williams. Yes, Atlanta has been playing well even without him but his absence means there is less depth on this Hawks team. Depth is critical to covering a big number because, if you have a good sized lead late, you’ll eventually be emptying the bench to try and rest your starters for the next game. Here it’s very questionable as to whether the Hawks will ever even get that big lead. Martin and Udrih will combine with Spencer Hawes and Francisco Garcia to give the Hawks all they can handle here. Also, Andres Nocioni has already proven to be a solid pick-up for the Kings and rookie Jason Thompson has averaged 16.5 points per game in his last two games and he grabbed 14 rebounds against the Wizards on Sunday. Yes, the Kings are currently without Bobby Jackson but they’ve also got Rashad McCants who is capable of going for double digits when given the playing time. Yes, it’s a lot of new faces on the Kings now but they’ve already proven that they’ve gelled enough to be a very competitive basketball team. In going 2-7 in their last nine games, note that the average margin of defeat has been six points per game. The available points for tonight’s game, as of early Tuesday morning, is DOUBLE that – a full dozen! We’ll grab the value with the underdog Kings as they should absolutely be in this one all the way! This team is not competing like a team that is 14-52 on the season. They are giving it their all night in and night out and we look for more of the same at Atlanta! Play Sacramento plus the points as a Top Play selection

Vernon Croy's **Tuesday Night NBA TOTAL OF THE MONTH** (Guaranteed)
Minnesota Timberwolves vs. San Antonio Spurs (Mar 17 8:35 PM)
                Over 191.5 (-110.0)
Take San Antonio Over 191.5, I had the Under 187 in the Spurs/Thunder game which cashed hands down last night but tonight I will take the Over with the Spurs playing on 0 days rest. The Spurs are one of the best defensive teams in the NBA but they will not be able to play as strong defensively tonight playing with no rest. The Spurs are shooting 41.6% from beyond the arc at home this season and 48.3% from the field. The Timberwolves opponents are averaging over 103 ppg against them this season while shooting 47.5% against them and the O/U is 6-1 for the Spurs when their starting 5 players combine for more than 160 minutes in their 1st game when playing on back to back days. The O/U is 8-2-1 in the Spurs last 11 games against a team with a losing record and he O/U is 11-5 for the Spurs in their last 16 home games. The O/U is 6-2-1 in the last 9 games between these two teams and the Timberwolves come into this game well rested so I look for them to pursue a high tempo game against a tired Spurs team. Take the Over as my NBA Total of the Month.

                  Jay Wright
South Carolina / Davidson UNDER 152.5

Note: Cocks have gone under in 2 of last 3 with a push thrown in. Davidson under is 8-1 in Wildcats last 9 games vs. a team with a winning % above .600. Under is 5-1 in Wildcats last 6 non-conference games. Under is 4-1 in Wildcats last 5 road games.

                  Weber State +12.5

Weber had a 12 game win streak snapped last week putting them in the NIT. They have an identical record as SDST and are catching a dozen? Odds makers clearly have no respect for the Wildcats who covered 19 of 25 games this season and a squad who are 7-0 ATS coming off a SU loss. SDST just 1-5 last 6 ATS as the fave.

                  Wyoming -2.5

Cowboys on an 8-2 ATS run at home last 10 and 7-2 ATS last 9 overall. Northeastern has lost last 2 overall and last 5 of 7. Wyoming have covered last 5 in a row at home as the fave and 6-0 ATS last 6 as the home fave. Take the Cowboys to route Northeastern and send em packing early.

                  Play-In Game Selection:

This will not count towards my record, but it's a game I like that didn't make it to the final 3 plays on the card tonight.

                  Morehead State -3.

On paper Bama State has the better record, but Morehead is coming off 2 wins both as the dog over Austin Peay and Tenn-Martin. They also crushed Eastern KY as a 3.5 point fave by 19 points. Their last 3 games have me sold that this team is on a mission to get in the Big Dance.

Washington State vs. Saint Marys CA (Mar 17 11:00 PM)
                      Saint Marys CA (-4.5) (-110.0)

                      St. Marys -4.5

Redemption time for the Gaels who were snubbed by the NCAA and they look to beat up a not so good Cougar team that struggled BIG on the road this season, while St. Marys only home loss was to Gonzaga. I cannot back a team on the road who averages 59 ppg on offense for the season unless they get close to double digits. Pat Mills is rested and will play better for St Marys, he is one of the top players on the west coast when healthy.

Northeastern vs. Wyoming (Mar 17 9:00 PM)
                      Wyoming (-3.0) (-110.0)

                      Wyoming -3

Wyoming has an uptempo high scoring offense while Northeastern is a slow it down type team that plays good defense. This faviors a home team who can score, and Northeastern has averaged just 59 ppg on the road and 58 ppg on offense their last 5 which explains their 2-6 ATS their last 8 games. .

                      Play 2 Units on Wyoming.

                          4 unit play.Take Florida -110

The Capitols come into Florida after a 5-1 loss last night to a surging Atlanta team. Goalie Jose Theodure was pulled but looks like he will get the start tonight. Off of yesterday injury report Sergei Fedorov has the flu and now today defenseman Mike Green is listed with the Flu, I think it runs a little deeper then those two guys’. The Cap's before last nights loss were winners of three straight but before that were losers of four straight and after last night loss are losers of five of the last eight with some bad losses in there. I think the Cap's have some issues right now one of them being confidence in their goaltending and tonight get a rested Florida team where every point is so important after blowing a two goal lead vs. the Lighting. Florida for the most part is healthy and I think at minus ten cents is a bargain and they pick off a reeling Washington team at home tonight

2 unit play.Take Phoenix +170 over San Jose

The Coyotes returned home on march 14 for a 2-0 shutout loss to Nashville for a bunch on new Coyotes home debut after a five game road trip in seven day's. That was a tough spot for them and it showed in only putting eight shots on goal for the first two periods. It was another good game by Phoenix goalie Ilya Bryzgalov who stopped 31 of 32 shots. Tonight the Sharks come to town after getting their star goalie Nabokov back who was outstanding in beating Anaheim. This Sharks team is still dealing with a lot of injuries and hasn't played consistent in weeks. I think we will get a good effort from the home doggy that is offering great value.

                          2 unit play.Take over 5 ½ in St. Louis @ Edmonton

Pretty much a playoff in Edmonton tonight with these teams separated by one point. This is their 4th meeting this year with two staying under, both goalies have been work horses for their clubs. The Blues have been scoring and own the 8th best power play in the league, while Edmonton has struggle on both special teams lately. Unlike most playoff type games that are played tight I don't see this game shaping up like that, I think this will be open type hockey with a good pace. I do think the team that takes advantage of their power play chances will come out on top here. I think the odds maker has the number right at 5.5 but think there should be some money attached this over, gives us some value in what I think will be a high scoring game
