        # 4 SHE'S A TEMPEST 6/1
        # 2 NOTHING LIKE YOU 6/1
        # 3 KINZA 6/5
SHE'S A TEMPEST has a very strong shot to take this race. Could best this group based on the speed rating - 91 - of her last contest. Has recorded solid speed figures in dirt route races in the past. This filly obviously likes the distance, going 1 for 1 in her races lately. NOTHING LIKE YOU - Has some interesting handicapping angles which make this one a wager. This filly has posted some nice finish positions in her last several efforts. KINZA - Can't overlook the connections here, a 35 winning percentage, one of the most favorable at getting into the winner's circle. Baffert has her trained soundly to break swiftly out of the starting gate.

          Sam Houston - Race #4 - Post: 2:30pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,000 Class Rating: 61

          Rating:

          #9 HIGH CALIBER CATCH (ML=6/1)
          #7 PRESS ON BABY (ML=2/1)

HIGH CALIBER CATCH - Taking a trip down in class; has the capability to make her presence felt. Likes to go to the front and the fact that today is a shorter distance should be favorable. I believe this entrant will be right there at the wire. Gets Lasix for the second time, so Caldwell must have confidence in her. PRESS ON BABY - Sprinters that come back to the races quickly are generally good plays. Look for this filly to run better in this race. Last clash at Sam Houston finishing sixth on a track listed as good is no sign of her true talent. I know the stable is serious today. The filly gets Lasix for the first time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #2 DULCE AMANECER YG (ML=3/1), #1 CRESSONS LIL CHARM (ML=4/1),

DULCE AMANECER YG - This horse ran a disappointing speed fig last time out. She shouldn't show signs of improvement and will probably get beat in today's event running that number. CRESSONS LIL CHARM - I find it hard to play any thoroughbred in a sprint race at 4/1 when she hasn't shown any positive results in sprints in the last couple months.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - PRESS ON BABY - When a race horse takes such a big drop in the class rating department, I always take a peek. I like what I see with this one and am betting on her.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #9 HIGH CALIBER CATCH to win. Have to have odds of at least 9/5 or better though
          EXACTA WAGERS: Box [7,9]

          TRIFECTA WAGERS:

            Aqueduct - Race #1 - Post: 12:20pm - Maiden Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $45,000 Class Rating: 77

            Rating:

            #1 EXTRA DIRTY (ML=8/1)

EXTRA DIRTY - This animal didn't run well on a sloppy track in her last race at Aqueduct. You should discount that effort. When Kocakaya and Chatterpaul team up on horses the ROI has been terrific at +999. This filly should improve after adding Lasix in the last race and getting it again today.

            Vulnerable Contenders: #3 NEXT ON STAGE (ML=4/5), #5 BROWN AS A BISCUIT (ML=5/1), #6 MAGGIE'S SONG (ML=6/1),

NEXT ON STAGE - The probable favorite is vulnerable here with the lack of morning activity. BROWN AS A BISCUIT - She showed not much at all in the last race. Hasn't finished in the money in any short distance races recently. Doubtful to see her doing it this time around either. MAGGIE'S SONG - This mount will probably be near the back of the pack as this field crosses the finish.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #1 EXTRA DIRTY on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more
            EXACTA WAGERS: None

              # 4 ROOKIE SALSA 8/5
              # 3 HEXAGON 2/1
              # 2 BAY HAVEN 3/1
I think ROOKIE SALSA is a competitive choice. He has been running quite well and the speed figures are among the top in this field. Must be given a shot - I like the figures from the last contest. Has respectable front speed and will most likely fare admirably against this group. HEXAGON - He has put up solid figures under today's conditions and ought to fare well against this group. Diaz and Diaz have won 36 percent of their races giving this racer a very good chance. BAY HAVEN - Will most likely be one of the front-runners of the pack going into the midpoint of the race. Seems to have a strong class edge based on the recent company kept.

Al Cimaglia: Cal Expo Pick 4 Analysis

                February 4, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Cal Expo has an 11-race card to wrap up the weekend. The 0.20 Pick 4 starts in Race 8. The sequence has a $25,000 guaranteed pool with a 16% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

                Race 8 (7:20 PM PST)

2-Tommy Shelby (12-1)-This is an opportunity to start with a price in what might be a chalky sequence. James Lackey could work an efficient trip and get sucked around. The class drop doesn't hurt, and the price should be large.
3-Cut A Rug (9/5)-This 7-year-old often does enough to almost win but shouldn't be out of place with this crew. Luke Plano will be steering as he also owns. Small price expected, and should on the point or near the top of the stack throughout.
6-Fox Valley Sidecar (7/2)-Winners of 2 straight stepped up in last and it wasn't pretty. Now returns to a more comfortable spot to take another picture and this was Jacob Cutting's pick over #7.
8-Stenning A (8-1)-This is another who should be in play with needed class relief. Can rally with the right trip if minds manners, as long as Winter Stalbaum provides an effective drive.

                Race 9 (7:40 PM PST)

1-Sneak Peek Hanover (5/2)-Jesse Pacheco steers his trainee and the plan should be a simple one for a picture. Take the short way around and stay in reach of the leaders at the head of the stretch.
2-OutLaw Blue By You (3-1)-This 10-year-old needs the right trip to win, and James Kennedy could make that happen. Can pass foes down the lane with an honest pace.
7-Marc Box Twenty (5-1)-This is the 3rd start in sequence and has been tossing hints in the last 2 races. The Roland barn is clicking and maybe Lasix will fully kick in tonight at a square price.

                Race 10 (8:00 PM PST)

2-Bunkerhill Bill (7/2)-Team Plano entry got a rough trip in last and faded badly. Likes to race up front and should have little trouble landing on the point or in the pocket.
4-Sin Machqueen (2-1)-Team Cutting entry deserves respect but a small price is tough to swallow. This father-son combo keeps doing well, so will use and hope it isn't over bet.
5-Cenalta Firedragon (9/2)-Finished right behind the one above after working to get the top. That wasn't a poor effort and is another who can post a win with a sharp steer. James Kennedy is at the controls, which won't hurt, and could be overlooked.

                Race 11 (8:20 PM PST)

4-Snap Krackle Ntrot (3-1)-Will take a swing with a trotter in this comingled-gate event. Qualified with hopples on, and finished 3rd behind the morning line chalk below. Hasn't raced since 11-20 and will look for this mare to be fresh and fire hot off the bench.
6-Another Tuff Woman (5/2)-Hasn't raced since 7-20 and the pacer put in 2 qualifiers in January. The 2nd tune-up on
1-28 caught my eye with a 58.1 back half to come out on top. This is a 3-year-old filly in a smorgasbord type of field, so will use and look for a strong try with Cutting at the controls.

                0.20 Pick 4

                2,3,6,8/1,2,7/2,4,5/4,6
                Total Bet=$14.40

                  Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

                  Santa Anita - Race #4
#5 Panic Alarm There is a bit of decent form going shorter from earlier in his career, and I think he might like turning back while dropping out of a string of graded stakes runs. Appealing enough.
#3 First Peace He's the reliable sprint form right now, but he's meeting a handful of potentially capable graded stakes droppers and might be a bit overbet. Obvious threat.
#1 Reiquist Think his form is a little more reliable than it looks at first glance as he comes out of a Grade I spot, and he might wind up finding a decent trip from off the pace while not being totally outrun early.
Race Summary Panic Alarm will need to come alive early enough at this shorter trip, but I think the cutback would wake him up a little bit.
                  Santa Anita - Race #7
#5 Grand Slam Smile Not sure if she's quite up to it today, but I'm hoping the price will be attractive enough to give her a look while meeting a couple of flashier and less experienced runners today. I like knowing she can rate a bit.
#6 Kopion I think she might be the most likely winner here, and she did what she was supposed to do at 1/5 against three others last time out. She draws well to prompt the pace rather than fight for it. Lots to like but the price.
#3 Kinza Wouldn't be shocked to see her in the mix early and late here, as her debut was really sharp when let go at 5/1. Dangerous if she can relax a bit.
Race Summary Grand Slam Smile meets some stretchout players who want to be right in the thick of it early, and she might find herself in a really good spot just watching it all unfold.
                  Santa Anita - Race #8
#1 Lahaina Flavor I've chased this one through a few of those recent starts after he got buried in behind horses turning for home a few times in a row. Maybe this kind of spot will fit his overall class profile a bit better right now, and a jockey change might wake him up.
#3 Sanger Dangerous pace has landed underneath shares with this kind in the past, but there is just not any serious pace lined up today, and he might control this one every step.
#5 Gold Council Think there might be a little upside for him while getting around two turns for the first time, and he might have taken something good away from that sprint comeback. Underneath in gimmicks.
Race Summary I'm two deep here with the pace and a closer on top who I think might be better than the lines on his page suggest. #9 Autoline is another who seems worth having in the mix on those deeper tickets.

Sunday TimeformUS Highlight Horse: Writer’s Regret gets logical class relief

This $25k claimer for New York-breds is pretty wide open, and it’s not made any easier by the presence of two coupled entries. One half of the Mark Hennig pair will have to scratch, since Dylan Davis is named on both. Between the two, I would prefer Warriors Revenge (#2), though he obviously has questions to answer after failing to show up with any kind of effort off the layoff last time.
Everything David Jacobson sends out has to be taken seriously right now, and there are reasons to like both parts of his entry here. Hot Rod Rumble (#1A) possesses dangerous early speed, though he’s moving up in class out of softer conditioned claiming races. Horn of Plenty (#1) has a more versatile running style, and he’s dropping down out of a tougher spot. I can’t say that I love any of his recent races, but he has run a few speed figures that put him in the mix.
The horse to beat might be Bustin Shout (#3), who just won at this same level back in early January. He didn’t get the smoothest trip that day, forced to wait in traffic in upper stretch before angling out and unleashing a strong kick to the wire. The third-place finisher was a bit more unlucky in that spot, but this horse still ran well, putting good efforts back to back after finishing second just 5 days prior to that. He needs some pace to develop up front, and he might get it here.
Six Percent (#4) is another to consider as he drops back down to this level. He’s primarily gone longer distances during his career, but he did run well sprinting at this level two back, losing by only a nose despite making a wide move on the far turn. He didn’t get the best trip last time after a poor start, and might be set for better on the turnback. Yet he’s another who needs a quick pace.
My top pick is Writer’s Regret (#5). He’s also dropping in class after facing tougher company for much of the past couple of seasons. He got some time off after this past summer, and returned with a pair of solid efforts at Finger Lakes. That 110 TimeformUS Speed Figure he earned for a victory two back makes him one of the fastest horses in this field. He obviously regressed when he returned to the NYRA circuit last time, but that Jan. 1 effort isn’t as bad as it looks at first glance. He didn’t get off to the best start and was ridden conservatively at the back of the pack, as his rider seemed to have difficulty securing a clear path for him. He has much more tactical speed than that, and figures to be more forwardly placed this time.
