Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    February 5, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway begins the week with an 11-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 has a $10,000 guaranteed pool and starts in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 8, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

2-Mirragon A (7/2)-This is a class test for just about everyone in the field and the Deters trainee should be competitive. So, will stick with those who can leave for the top and this veteran checks that box. Jordan Stratton should have the pedal down and take his chances when the wings fold.
3-Karloo Bradley N (4-1)-The Jared Bako trainee has cashed checks versus better. Matt Kakaley should be leaving and can land on top or in the 2- hole. The 8-year-old has been camera shy but may have met a beatable field.
5-Mind Hunter 4-1-The Jason Bartlett-Per Engblom combo shouldn’t be ignored this time The 5-yr-old needs a trip but may have an advantage being a bit more versatile than the others and should offer a fair price.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM PST)

2-Sweet Troy (12-1)-Here is a price shot that put in a decent race from the 7-hole after being off 6-weeks. Raced the back half in 56.2 and drops to the level of the last win. Will look for Brent Holland, who stuck with the Paul Stafford trainee, to work a cozy trip at a big price.
4-King James Express (3-1)-Loses Holland to #2 but Jimmy Pants can handle the challenge in a difficult race to read. Has cashed checks against better and should relish the company in the 3rd start after the Holiday break. Has the gate speed to race near the top of the stack and should be in the hunt at the wire.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM PST)

3-Statement Made A (9/2)-Will try to beat the 9/5 choice #4 and will look for better in the 3rd start off the bench for the Daguet barn. Did show some life last week and will look for Mark MacDonald to have this one in play turning for the wire.
5-Alotbetter N (3-1)-Comes off a dull try, now drops and meets a field with no standouts. My take is Kakaley will have the gas pedal down and will try to wire this crew. There isn't much gate speed in the field, and this is the level of its last picture.
6-Rock This Way (9/2)-Was driven aggressively in last time in the 3rd start since 12-9 when the Burke barn took over. Gets some post relief, should offer a solid price and with some live cover could roll by down the lane.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM PST)

4-Sporty M Three (8/5)-The Burke trainee hasn't won since before there was frost on the pumpkin. This 5-year-old continues to drop and burned money last week at 4/5. Will look for a different trip in a return appearance against the same kind.
6-Brutallyhandsome A (5-1)-Aussie invader looks like the real deal and goes for 3 straight wins. Has big gate speed and this race will probably go through the 5-year-old. Bumps up but best to not overlook.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    2,3,5/2,4/3,5,6/4,6

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Mahoning Valley - Race #1
#1 Onemorandthecheck Pace couldn't stay late last out, but the two-back run looks competitive in here if he's able to control the pace from the fence. Depends on what the next guy does...
#6 Barrelhouse He looks like the only serious prompting pace lined up in here, and that might give him a really great trip just off the top choice while waiting to engage. Tough to split the top two.
#5 Khopilot He ran much better when getting back around two turns last out, and he'd probably benefit if the top two kept each other honest early.
Race Summary Onemorandthecheck looks likely to control the pace -- the question is how much pressure he'll take from Barrelhouse, who looks like the main danger on form and race flow.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #6
#5 Crafty Conquest He gets into a bit softer spot after giving way late when facing better in those last couple starts, but there doesn't appear to be a ton of serious early burn lined up, so maybe his tactical pace puts him in the right spot.
#8 Free Square Wouldn't argue too hard with anyone leaning this way, as there's a real chance he wins this without too much trouble. Class relief with the locals should help the cause.
#11 Lauda Speed He was a good fit when getting in at this level last time out, and the price might get a little bit better than the even-money offering from last time around.
Race Summary Crafty Conquest is never a sure thing late, but I think he might be speedy enough to get a jump on some of the other capable players from a bit farther back.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #9
#3 Kissing Medals Have had a decent go while giving a look to this barn's runners, so get a look at her on the track ahead of this. Wouldn't be a shock to see her run OK at first asking in a race without much finishing form.
#7 Amy's Star She's tough if she can build on the debut effort at all in this second start, but I have a mild worry about a couple other forward players forcing a bit of a pace battle. Obvious player.
#8 Lightening Lottie She stopped late at 4/5 in that second try, but something like her debut running line would probably put her in the mix with these. Tough call with a potentially negative race flow.
Race Summary Kissing Medals debuts in a race with a handful of interesting horses with some speed, and I'm hoping she might be a fresh face in the right place to pick up some pieces.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Parx - Race #2
#7 DECOUPAGE (4-1) Ran 1-2 in 8 of 15 starts at Parx, drops into an ideal spot, sheds blinkers.
#5 FLASHING DIAMOND (2-1) Classy 9-year-old starts fresh, looks to build on $272k 6F bankroll.
#4 CLASSY SADIE (10-1) Packs late kick, runs for Wolfsont, use underneath in gimmick wagers.
Race Summary DECOUPAGE dueled with the runner-up before a pair of deep closers joined the mix and passed by. She cuts back to a short sprint in her second start off the Ness claim and can make amends as the beaten favorite. Bet to win and place.
        Parx - Race #3
#3 MERRYCHILL (6-1) Back with own kind, must stay in closer contact early in third start.
#4 KATE’S LOVE (4-1) Made 10th-to-2nd move in troubled debut at 48-1 odds, worked in :47.1 recently.
#6 BREEZY DANCE (7-2) Beaten favorite in latest, could hold tactical edge, gets Lasix.
Race Summary MERRYCHILL showed some late interest to beat half the field when claimed in her debut, then was ambitiously placed in a follow-up stakes race. Hunch she fires for a barn on a 6-for-15 run with maiden claimers. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4-6 exacta box.
        Parx - Race #4
#3 HASTEN THENCE (4-1) Pounced on dueling leaders, steps up off claim, can bat .500 with win.
#7 ACHILLES HEEL (5-1) Plays to a steady beat going long, projects ideal trip for sharp outfit.
#2 BIG BEEMSTER (5-1) ‘Hasten’ stablemate rallied for five thirds and a second in last eight routes.
Race Summary HASTEN THENCE benefited from a lively pace battle and romped in his first start at this distance. He takes on older rivals today but can repeat with continued improvement. His 2-for-5 record looks good against six rivals who stand a combined 12-for-122. Bet to win and place.

            Dave's Monday Free Play:
            1* on Miami +6
The Key: The Miami Hurricanes are 3-1 SU & 3-1 ATS in their last 4 games overall. The Hurricanes are just 2-3 SU in their last 5 ACC road games but not one of those 3 losses came by more than 6 points. I expect them to take the Virginia Cavaliers to the wire tonight, so getting 6 points with Miami is a nice price. The Cavaliers have won 6 consecutive games and are starting to get a little too much love from the books because of it. They struggle to get margin because they play at such a slow tempo. The last 2 matchups in this series were decided by 2 and 3 points. Virginia is 3-12 ATS in its last 15 games off 4 or more consecutive wins. The Hurricanes are 21-8 ATS in their last 29 road games. Take Miami.

                  NHL | Avalanche vs Rangers

Play on: Rangers -109 at BetVegas

Monday NHL Free play. My selection is on New York over Colorado at 7:05 pm et on Monday.
We'll tread lightly in the first game out of the All-Star break but I do like the Rangers to get rolling as they host the Avalanche in this non-conference affair. Colorado went into the break riding a three-game winning streak. It remains just 12-12 on the road this season where it has allowed 3.5 goals per contest. There's a chance we'll see call-up Justus Annunen in goal for his second start of the season should the Avs choose to give Alexandar Georgiev the night off after he took part in the All-Star festivities. New York ran into a rough stretch prior to the break but did go in on a positive note with a 7-2 win in Ottawa a week ago Saturday. Here, the Rangers return home where they're a winning team on the season and have allowed just 3.0 goals per game. Note that Colorado is just 5-6 in its last 11 games following consecutive home wins by two goals or more. Meanwhile, New York is 21-18 after a road victory in which it scored four goals or more. Take New York.

Stay tuned, because my SWAC TOTAL OF THE YEAR is going to be posted a bit later this morning, as we're just waiting on the final lines to be posted. The NHL returns on Monday as well and we think that the home side is worth the price of admission in this spot. The Isles are just 8-11-4-1 on the road, while the Leafs are 11-9-2-0 at home. The Isles went into the break with zero momentum, losing three straight. The Leafs play with revenge after a 4-3 OT loss in NY in mid January. Look for Toronto to avenge that setback and to kick off the second half with a solid win here at home; consider the Leafs!
