Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 with a $10,000 guaranteed pool starts in Race 5. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 9, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Heaven On High N (4-1)-The 7-year-old PcD shipper has hit the board in 6 of 11 at Yonkers. Mark MacDonald has gate speed to use, and the Larry Stalbaum trainee is in good form. Should protect the rail, might be tough to tackle down the lane, and could offer a square price.
3-Fortify (4-1)-Some won’t use because of fading in a qualifier at M1 on March 9th. It was 42 degrees, a good track and went to the half in 55.2 on the engine, in a 152 mile. May need this race, but the price will likely be right to use and won’t hold the tune-up against him. Likes Yonkers, has hit the board in 25 of 37 with 12 photos.
6-American Dealer N (3-1)-Handily beat easier in last, drawing off by almost 3 lengths after a bumpy trip. This will be a bigger test but knows how to beat this kind. Will use as there is no one in this field that should scare this Linda Toscano trainee.

Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

5-Thrasher (5/2)-Comes off a sharp effort for a picture, was claimed back by the Alexander barn and faces $50k claimers tonight. Should get a good steer as Matt Kakaley will have in play. Has a solid chance to double up as this is a field full of horses who hope to be $50k claimers.
6-As Always (4-1)-Engblom entry is the only horse who has recently faced $50k claimers, albeit the age restricted variety.
Comes off a dull try but was somewhat pace compromised. This time Yannick Gingras could leave and land on the point or be no worse than in the 2-hole.

Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

2-Glacis (5/2)-Beat the $30k claimers from post 8, was claimed by the Scott Di Domenico stable and steps up. George Brennan will be at the controls. Got an efficient drive in last and should be in line for similar this week.
4-Tuggin On My Heart (7/2)-Wired the field on 3-4, missed a start and comes back versus the same kind. Hasn't raced in 2 weeks, will use, and hope the Jenn B trainee is ready roll.
8-Reigning Deo (3-1)-Has been in sharp form since the end of January and will include at what should be a solid price due to the post draw. Can come off cover and catch the leaders. Needs an honest pace, and that should happen.

Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

3-Big Sir (2-1)-Comes off a sharp try to finish 2nd against this kind with Gingras in the bike. Not loving the short price
and was a beaten chalk last week. Still needs to prove itself and is only 2-27 since the start of 2023. That said, wouldn't want to leave off the ticket versus this bunch.
6-Odds On Pick Six (8-1)-Need to use a price in a race like this because everyone has warts. Comes back in sequence for the 3rd straight race and that hasn't been a regular occurrence. George Brennan can time the gate, get on the point and surprise.

Mahoning Valley - Race #3

#3 Grand Gizmo	He has to turn the tables on the guy just outside of him, but I think he should be in the perfect spot to dictate the tempo right near the top. Think he's tough today.
#6 Kalinba	Tactical speed should never be too far off this, and he steps up to this next condition after stringing a couple good tries together. In the mix.
#5 Charger	Dropper doesn't bring much to the table as far as the recent running lines go, but he has been racing for much higher price tags in a lot of those tries and probably fits well here. Could wake up.
Race Summary	Grand Gizmo has a tactical edge on a couple of the other logical players signed on, and maybe he offers a tick or two better on the tote today after the last one?

Mahoning Valley - Race #7

#1 She's Crafty	Don't think the pace is going to be super sharp, but there are enough tactical types signed on to hopefully ensure the leaders won't get much of a break. Reliable late runner makes sense.
#3 Lucky Cougar	She stretches out while in solid form, but I'm not totally sure what to make of her going long for the first time at this point. Could find a first-jump trip.
#5 Windy Lu Who	She has stepped up nicely in a couple allowance starts off the claim, and she's got enough versatility to find a really cozy spot spying the speed. One of the ones.
Race Summary	Tough race, but I think She's Crafty has some late appeal in this one after saving ground throughout, as a few of these figure to be moving in the wrong direction at some point off the far turn.

Mahoning Valley - Race #8

#1 Eagle Nest	Think he has a claim on this while turning back to a sprint trip, as he might be quick enough to find the front from the fence. Has some tables to turn, but maybe at a bit better price today?
#6 Prosecutor	He's got pretty reliable form right now and figures to get another good tracking trip while turning back, and he has had the top choice's number in recent starts.
#7 Pressley Ridge	His form is hit or miss, but there are a couple nice sprint tries on his page, and he has been in the frame with some of these before. Maybe.
Race Summary	Eagle Nest gets back to his best trip today and should be quick enough to make an impact from the start. Thinking the price might be a touch better today?

Turf Paradise - Race #4

#7 LIGHTED VESSEL (8-1)	Good recovery from poor start in debut, good value play with ideal set-up.
#6 RANGER JOE (6-5)	Dueled and earned top speed figure in photo-finish setback at this distance.
#5 MAESTOSO (5-1)	Worked in 1:00 from gate, showed some zip in debut, drop could be the answer.
Race Summary	LIGHTED VESSEL spotted the field several lengths at the start in his debut, advanced steadily while 3-wide and leveled off nicely to finish third after he was headstrong in early stretch. He gets pace to rally into and can spring the upset. Bet to win and place and play a 7-6-ALL trifecta.

Turf Paradise - Race #5

#10 SURROUNDEDBYANGELS (3-1)	Back in stakes comfort zone, back on Lasix, lures Franco to ride.
#5 U CAN DO U (4-1)	Dead game in stakes win against similar foes, but slow starts have been problem.
#8 ARIZONA DAVIN (9-2)	Reversed form as gelding, rallied into photo-finish view at 22-1 odds.
Race Summary	SURROUNDEDBYANGLES returns to sprinting and gets Lasix again, a formula that produced a sharp debut victory. He raced close-up for a half-mile in a $100,000 stakes at Sunland Park but was no match for the top two finishers, who came back to beat him again in the Grade 3 Sunland Park Derby that featured multiple graded stakes-placed winner Stronghold (5/3-2-0, $377k). Bet to win and place and play a 5-8-10 exacta box.

Turf Paradise - Race #7

#2 SEAU (5-2)	Claimed at age 9, no threat as odds-on choice, should handle this field on front end.
#3 LIL MIRACLE MAN (3-1)	Troubled trip on cutback to 6F, new barn excels with rested runners.
#1 BRICKHOUSE (10-1)	Much improved try in long sprint, got up to finish a distance second.
Race Summary	SEAU failed as the 1-to-9 favorite in a six-horse field off the Evans claim, offering only a mild bid. But the classy 10-year-old has speed and appears an all-or-nothing type on the drop to the bottom level for his first start in 2024. Bet to win and place a play 2-1 and 2-3 exactas.

GRAY LIGHTNING - Servis adds Lasix to this one today. I'd look for a significant improvement. MISSY SIXTYSIX - Jock hops back on after getting to know the magnificent animal by riding last time out. That's always a good thing. The ROI when Ruiz and Linder team up is outstanding. I like to play this angle, a racer coming back off a nice race within the last 30 days. Linder adds Lasix for the 2nd time today. Certainly could make the difference in this race. TELEPHONE LINE - I'll bet that this filly even surprised her connections when she made her initial bow on January 24th and finished first. This horse picks up a lot of money per start. Uppermost in this race. Here is an appropriate handicapping angle that I've used many times before. Play a filly (like this one) getting Lasix for the second time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 DANCING DIANA (ML=2/1), #3 JODY'S RUBY (ML=9/2),

DANCING DIANA - This filly hasn't had any recent accomplishments in sprint races. Not easy to play her in this event. JODY'S RUBY - Hasn't been coming close at all of late. Hasn't finished in the money in any short distance affairs lately. Not likely to see her doing it this time around either. Finished eighth in her most recent effort with a run-of-the-mill rating. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this bunch.

ASA - Avant has this filly running well and is a competitive selection based on the respectable Equibase Speed Figures garnered in short races recently. Boasts solid speed figures on average overall when matched with the rest of this field. HA CHI CORONA - Make a note that this one runs now going off Lasix today.

LET HER BUCK - Faced tougher last time out at Will Rogers Downs. Based on class ratings, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this horse on my list of top contenders. I figure Young is making a good move here. This filly can only benefit from the shorter distance. Another way to identify class is EPS (earnings per start). This horse has the uppermost in the field. I think she'll be close at the finish. This filly is rounding her way back into shape. Should run well today. AUNT LOTTIE - I like to play horses that faced open company in their last race and drop into state bred races. This mare fits the bill. She'll be laying in perfect stalking position, right behind the early speed.

GOSPEL BLOSSOM - Oddsmaker's morning line of 5/2 make this thoroughbred a pass by my approach. K O AMERICAN PIE - This animal hasn't been in the mix in either of her last two efforts. Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some success lately in short distance contests in order to wager on her. PAULA M - This filly hasn't had any recent accomplishments in short distance contests. Not easy to play her in this contest. This steed ran a pedestrian speed rating last out. She shouldn't run better and will likely suffer defeat in today's race running that number.

KATE'S LOVE seems to be the bet in here. She has formidable class ratings, averaging 63, and has to be given a chance in this contest. In the upper half of earnings per start at the distance/surface in this lot. GO CHLOE GO - Will likely be one of the early speedsters of the bunch going into the halfway point of the contest. ROCK TUNE - The Lasix change (with second time Lasix) may spark a reversal of fortune for this filly. She has a good opportunity here as handler, Linder, has strong win clip with horses going this distance.
