Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    April 1, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway begins the week with a 12-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 rolls in Race 5, and the sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

1-Thunder Hunter Joe (6-1)-This 4-yr old has been off since Oct 27, and then was a sick scratch on Nov 9 before being put away. Qualified and was handled conservatively in the first 2 legs of the Borgata. Pilot Tim Tetrick is back for his 2nd straight steer and if Joe is going to make some noise in this series it needs to start tonight. Using at this price and hoping he is able to bring a top effort.
3-Desperate Man 8/5-This is clearly the one to beat. Should be on the point or in the pocket behind Joe when the wings fold. Winner of 2 in a row is sharp as a tack.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

4-Deetzy (6-1)-Gets post relief plus usual driver Brent Holland is back in the bike and both should help. The Stafford barn is clicking, and this looks like go-time for the 12-year-old.
5-All Alone (8/5)-Has been in a good form and Jason Bartlett should be blasting out. Can land on the point and may be in charge every step of the way. Does good work at Yonkers, has hit the board in 10 of 13 and has taken 4 pictures.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

2-Al Always (5/2)-Drops and lands in a good spot to get a close-up seat and seal the deal at the wire. Yannick Gingras should be able to provide the right trip, and this looks like a drop and pop opportunity.
4-Tuffenuftowearpink (6-1)-Comes off a no move mile in the 1st start after an injured scratch. Should be a healthy price and if brings a big try it could lead to a juicy payout.
6-Motive Hanover (9/2)-Comes off a sharp win, wired the field from post 3 and has been in sharp form since mid-February. The start will be key but could be tough to tackle if gets the top without much strain.

    Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

1-Artist Best (9/2)-Needs to be racing near the lead at the 3/4's pole and George Brennan has some options from the rail. Should offer a nice price with an 0-9 record and could be heard from versus this group.
5-Uriel Blue Chip (8/5)-Was off a month before the last start and appeared to need the race. Should be a major player this week if dialed on high.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    1,3/4,5/2,4,6/1,5
    Total Bet=$24

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

      Mahoning Valley - Race #2
#5 Machisto Not sure there is any price to be had here, but I think his baseline stuff is supposed to handle these. The class of the guy just inside is the main worry.
#4 C C's Clear Creek His form soured as the meet went on, and he's now in a much easier spot while dropping in for this tag. Obvious chance on class, but he has also had a lot of chances already.
#3 How U Doin He's not totally out of the question, but I think one of the top pair is more likely to land it, though he should get a decent tracking trip to give him every chance to share.
Race Summary Machisto has honest form and ran well in those two- and three-turn Charles Town tries, and he's not meeting a whole lot of imposing locals in this one.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #6
#6 Cagua She'll look for a third straight score today while drawn outside, and she might be quick enough to find a really good spot while tracking a couple speedier players early.
#1 Joya Del Sur She has some pace from the inside and a couple of recent lines on her page that would probably make her tough, but this sharper trip could lead to a potentially tricky trip from the rail.
#5 Miss Shady She should be in a perfect spot just off the splits while watching everything unfold, and she has fired every time she's gone to post this season. Logical player.
Race Summary Cagua is in good form right now, and she makes some sense while stepping into a first-level allowance without much class signed on.
      Mahoning Valley - Race #8
#4 Mission Control He tracked the pace but couldn't quite pick up late in the debut run at Tampa, but he's a better fit with this local group and brings some obvious second-out upside.
#6 Real Naughty Tough call for me depending on how he gets bet, as he has some dangerous pace and is protected today off the claim. He has never been a competitive special weight horse, but all his previous tries at this level came in Kentucky, so he might stack up a little better here.
#1 Enjoy the Cracken He hasn't put a scare into anyone yet while landing a couple trifecta finishes in the first two starts, but he might wind up in a similar spot to grind away along the fence for another piece while a couple others settle the score.
Race Summary Mission Control and Real Naughty seem like the right pair here, but the former has more upside at this point and would benefit if Real Naughty and #3 Mexitexafornia mixed things up early.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Turf Paradise - Race #3
#3 GOALINE(2-1) Solid work tab leading to his 5-year-old debut, chased pair of short-priced winners.
#6 ROYAL JOKER (9-2) Finished in the money in 5 of 7 main-track sprints at Turf Paradise.
#2 CASH’S CAT (6-1) Needed comeback try, showed pulse out of town prior, changes riders.
Race Summary GOALINE, unraced until he turned 5 this year, chased a 1-to-2 and 9-to-5 winner before fading in a pair of higher-tagged sprints. He continues to work well at Turf Paradise and looms the one to beat on the class drop. Bet to win and place.
        Turf Paradise - Race #4
#4 BRADY BOY (3-1) Wide trip took its toll in late stages, must avoid duel with better post draw.
#1 ROYAL HALO (9-2) Returns on short rest but appears rounding to another good race in repeat try.
#3 COOL PAPA G (3-1) Set fast pace, won on barn switch, then gave way to duel in 1M allowance.
Race Summary BRADY BOY dueled 4-wide most of the way, dug in near the sixteenth pole and got caught by a pair of deep closers in the same spot. He moves from post 8 inward and can make better use of his speed today against similar foes. Bet to win and place and play 4-1 and 4-3 exactas.
        Turf Paradise - Race #5
#2 BEA MISCHIEF (9-2) Winless in seven starts since her August victory at the same distance.
#4 SPRING SPINNING (7-2) &ndas Evans claim sprung 13-1 upset on Del Mar lawn at this distance in 2022.
#5 LEMON DROP LADY (2-1) Steadily miler runs for cheapest claiming price of career.
Race Summary BEA MISCHIEF saved ground chasing ‘decent fractions’ and ‘kicked clear in the final stages’ to make her second start on turf a winning one at Golden Gate in the fall. She steps up off the claim and her price should go up compared to his recent starts on the main track. Bet to win and place.

MAD LUTHER looks very good to best this group and is a very good value bet given the line at 12/1. Overall the Equibase Speed Figures of this equine look very strong in this race. This pony has a terrific win percentage in turf routes. PLAYOFF BOUND - Ran a strong last race.

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #2 - Post: 1:22pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $12,200 Class Rating: 62

                Rating:

                #4 C C'S CLEAR CREEK (ML=2/1)

C C'S CLEAR CREEK - This is a classic 'Lone Front-runner' scenario. If Batista gets him out of the gate cleanly it'll likely be smooth sailing. Taking this jock/handler combination is a smart choice. You probably should discount that last affair at Mahoning Valley Race Cour in the mud where he finished outside the top 3. Should do well right here on a fast track. Recent speed ratings show dominant pattern of improvement.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #5 MACHISTO (ML=6/5), #3 HOW U DOIN (ML=3/1), #1 NO MORE GUNS (ML=6/1),

MACHISTO - Hasn't raced or had any morning drills since Mar 9th. Not much value on this morning-line favorite. NO MORE GUNS - I don't think this pony likes running on the inside, certainly not out of the one hole. Substandard rating last out at Mahoning Valley Race Cour at 5 1/2 furlongs. GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - C C'S CLEAR CREEK - I start with the class horse in the field then work my way down. This one's got the top earnings per start. No need to look further.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #4 C C'S CLEAR CREEK to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds

                  Will Rogers Downs - Race #2 - Post: 1:42pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,000 Class Rating: 88

                  Rating:

                  #4 SIDETOWN (ML=3/1)

SIDETOWN - Strong return on investment for this jockey and trainer duo. Faced tougher in the last race at Will Rogers Downs. Based on Equibase class figures, this is a weaker bunch, so I will put this animal on my list of top contenders. I like to play this handicapping angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a nice contest within the last month or so.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #6 MIRANDEN (ML=5/2), #2 SHELL SHOCKER (ML=3/1), #7 TIN BADGE (ML=6/1),

MIRANDEN - The morning-line favorite is vulnerable here with the lack of workouts. In any event of 5 furlongs, I like to bet on a contender that has been on the board in sprint races lately. SHELL SHOCKER - Mediocre fig last time out at Will Rogers Downs at 5 furlongs. Don't believe this mount will improve too much today. TIN BADGE - I'd like to see more preferred recent showings with M/L odds of 6/1. When examining today's class rating, he will have to register a better speed figure than last out to compete in this dirt sprint.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Putting our cash on #4 SIDETOWN to win. Have to have odds of at least 1/1 or better though

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 5 MISS SHADY 3/1
                    # 3 CROSSED UP 5/1
                    # 2 TATTERED HEART 8/1
MISS SHADY looks to be a formidable contender. She has earned very strong numbers under today's conditions and will probably fare well versus this group. Overall the speed figures of this animal look quite good in this competition. Is a solid choice - given the 83 Equibase speed fig from her most recent race. CROSSED UP - This mare ought to be given a shot just off the earnings per start in dirt sprint races alone. Always tough to beat Vecchio and Severino working together, winning 32 percent of their races. TATTERED HEART - Should land on the board without a hitch. If you examine closely, this horse has some longshot possibilities.
