Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    April 8, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 12-race card to begin the week. The 0.50 Pick 5 starts in Race 5 and has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 rolls in Race 9, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

3-King James Express (4-1)-Comes off an even effort versus $50k claimers, should be a square price, and now drops to a spot to shine. But doesn’t have much gate speed. So, Mark MacDonald needs to work a sharp drive and be racing with the leaders on the last turn.
4-As Always (3-1)-The Engblom-Gingras combo was bet in last, and the beaten chalk took the overland route, and it didn't work out. Should be better here but wouldn’t want another short price. Needs to leave quickly to get a pocket ride behind Motive Hanover and take its chances down the lane.
6-Motive Hanover (5/2)-Would probably look to fade the Joe/Jen trainee trying to win its 3rd straight but draws good enough to land on the point. Can make it 3 in a row if gets the jump on this crew.

    Race 10 (10:00 PM EST)

1-Rocknroll Runa A (7/2)-The Stalbaum trainee is in fine form and should be a main player from the rail. Might be overlooked and could provide some value as others need a Series win.
3-Coaches Corner (2-1)-The Coach is a tough customer and probably doesn't have the quickness off the gate to get on the point. But Bartlett should be lurking near the leaders and if close enough turning for the wire it could be picture time.
4-Hellabalou (3-1)-This Burke entry shouldn't be overlooked. Gingras will leave and if the 6-year-old lands in the pocket without much strain watchout. Missed by only a nose last week with a 2-hole ride and left from the 7-hole.

    Race 11 (10:20 PM EST)

1-Tuggin On My Heart (9/5)-Has been in super sharp form and has won 4 straight, the last was at this level. Draws the rail and could lead every step of the way again.
4-Sailboat Hanover (5-1)-If someone is going to beat the two inside it could be a horse that can come off cover. Sailboat raced big rallying in last and knows how to win. Austin Siegelman needs to get him in position to sweep by and if so there should be an honest pace.

    Race 12 (10:40 PM EST)

2-Kerford Road A (5/2)-Won't be 5-1 this week but could get another efficient trip and double up for Joe B.
3-Big Sir (7/2)-Didn't show up versus the $50k claimers and now drops to the level of the previous win which came at the this same level. Should get off the gate in good shape and be racing at the top of the stack.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

          Turf Paradise - Race #4 - Post: 2:14pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $15,000 Class Rating: 72

          Rating:

          #4 ROYAL JOKER (ML=7/2)

ROYAL JOKER - This front-runner should benefit from this race's shorter distance. Was in a $30,000 Maiden Optional Claiming race at Turf Paradise in the last race. That event had a class rating of 80 and he is moving down right here in this race. A certain solid contender. Ranked numero uno in earnings per start. Another indicator that this horse has class. This gelding's last fig recorded on Feb 26th is number one in last race Equibase speed figures.

          Vulnerable Contenders: #8 GOALINE (ML=5/2), #3 DELTA DELTA (ML=4/1), #1 MAESTOSO (ML=9/2),

GOALINE - 5/2 odds isn't enough for this participant when examining the most recent outings. DELTA DELTA - Don't believe this less than sharp equine has what it takes to be the victor in today's event. MAESTOSO - Pace is so significant, and this speed merchant is going to have a speed battle on his hands.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #4 ROYAL JOKER is going to be the play if we are getting 1/1 or better

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE STARTED FOR A CLAIMING PRICE OF $25,000 OR LESS AND WHICH HAVE NEVER WON A RACE OTHER THAN MAIDEN OR CLAIMING OR WHICH HAVE NEVER WON FOUR RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE AT ONE MILE OR OVER SINCE MARCH 8 ALLOWED 3 LBS. (RACES WHERE ENTERED FOR $16,000 OR LESS NOT CONSIDERED IN

            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 7 LAYTOWN 3/1
            # 3 THIRSTY PAPPY 7/2
            # 8 MADISON LUVS DUKE 10/1
LAYTOWN looks formidable to best this field. Is a solid contender based on figures recorded lately under today's conditions. Has been running very well lately and will almost certainly be up on the lead early on. Has to be considered based on the very good speed figure put up in the last race. THIRSTY PAPPY - The Equibase Speed Figure of 90 from his latest race looks competitive in here. Has to be given a shot here on the basis of the figs in the speed section alone. MADISON LUVS DUKE - He has a good opportunity for this event as trainer, Ness, has very solid win rate with horses going this distance. Is tough not to examine given the company run in lately.

              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 1 PROUD CIVILIAN 9/5
              # 5 FUNTASTIC VOW 10/1
              # 7 AIR MARSHAL 20/1
PROUD CIVILIAN is my choice. Is difficult not to look at given the company run in as of late. Looks very good for the conditions of this contest today, showing solid numbers in dirt sprint races lately. Must be given a shot here on the basis of the figures in the speed realm alone. FUNTASTIC VOW - This equine enters today's race on Lasix. This conditioner has the strongest ROI in this field with entries racing at this distance and surface.

Mahoning Valley Race Course - Race #6 - Post: 3:43pm - Allowance - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $25,900 Class Rating: 75

                Rating:

                #5 CATCHAFALLNSTAR (ML=10/1)
                #1 URBAN COWGIRL (ML=9/5)
                #4 ISLANDINTHESTREAM (ML=4/1)

CATCHAFALLNSTAR - I really like that recent contest on March 20th at Mahoning Valley Race Cour where she finished second. It looks like the speed horses may duel each other into the ground. When the real running starts this mare should be finishing strongly. Trainer, Gorham, has been deliberate with this mare off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. Just check out her most recent speed fig, 75. That one fits in this group. URBAN COWGIRL - This jock and trainer's equines have been producing a positive ROI. ISLANDINTHESTREAM - Cedillo is right back for another contest today after sitting atop this animal for the 1st ride on February 15th and ought to know the ropes to this one a little better. I think the shorter trip will help this filly stay the distance. I like to see fast drills. This filly's last one was very good. Second fastest of the day. Filly scored her last race here on Feb 15th as a shipper. I think she looks like a winner once again.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #3 AMENSET (ML=5/2), #2 DELOVELY (ML=7/2),

AMENSET - Can't bet on this pony in today's sprint of 6 furlongs. Hasn't even finished in the money in a sprint event recently. This mare recorded a speed fig in her last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event. DELOVELY - The speed fig last out doesn't fit very well in this event when I look at the class rating of today's event. Mark this thoroughbred as a likely underpriced equine.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - ISLANDINTHESTREAM - This filly has the top speed figure last race with a very good 75. She is the top gamble here.
