    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Keeneland - Race #4
#8 Coinvest He has been knocking on the door through those first two starts, and he should find another good spot while racing near the top. Maybe the guy just inside of him keeps the price honest enough?
#7 Unit Economics Think this is likely a top-heavy race between these two logical players, as they both race for top barns with good running lines on the page.
#11 San Martin Interested enough that Jose Ortiz signed on at first asking, and there's at least some fun potential in the pedigree. Worth a look on the track.
Race Summary Coinvest would be playable for me at anything like 5/2, as I think he'll get the jump on Unit Economics. Beyond those two, a couple with some potential price appeal are San Martin and #12 Mohtafil.
    Keeneland - Race #7
#2 Accede Her three dirt sprint tries produced a couple wins and a Grade II placing, so her hit-or-miss recent form isn't a huge concern. Dreamy trip tucked in just behind the pace?
#3 Howl She's the clear one to beat while dropping out of Grade I company, but she's going to be a short price off a run in which she didn't even pick up a little bit. I respect her previous form, but I'm a little hesitant today and will let her bounce back without me.
#8 Amaretti She's dangerous on her best form, but her two wins both came when she was able to pretty clearly control the tempo, and I wonder if there are a couple in here who can keep pace. Tough call for me, but she seems capable.
Race Summary Accede could work out a perfect trip while settled in just behind a couple more serious speed players. Wonder if she might have a decent year.
    Keeneland - Race #8
#1 Thermoscope Get a look at him on the tote and track ahead of this, but I wonder if this is the kind of spot that could be set for a decent firster to score. Maybe.
#9 St. Neots He'll go second off the break after a useful comeback at Gulfstream in which he loomed turning for home but couldn't quite find enough off the bench. Capable at maybe an underlaid price?
#4 Pilkington A couple of his recent tries keep him in the frame for a piece of this, and I like the race he comes out of in New Orleans a little bit. Underneath and maybe on stretch tickets.
Race Summary #10 John The Beer Man makes a lot of sense in here and figures to take his share of the cash, but I'm going to stand against and hope he's along too late, even if he brings a more tactical trip today. Thermoscope has some appeal on paper with some pretty fancy names in the pedigree.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Evangeline Downs - Race #1
#7 D’BUSKER (2-1) Takes magnified class drop, adds blinkers, today’s Best Bet.
#8 LA LOLA (12-1) Ran second behind the 1-to-9 favorite two starts back.
#1 MY IDEA (7-2) Broke out at start, lugged in through stretch, ran third for higher tag.
Race Summary D’BUSKER chased the two favorites while 4-wide but couldn’t keep pace in a $20,000 sprint at Fair Grounds. She should make her presence felt from the outset in start number three. Bet to win and place and play a 7/1,8/ALL trifecta.
      Evangeline Downs - Race #2
#2 FORT BONZ (5-1) Right set-up, right price at proven distance and with better post draw.
#6 AND FIFTY (2-1) Has speed, held on for one win in last five route attempts at Fair Grounds.
#7 TAKEN BACK (8-1) Late runner should benefit from comeback try but he’s 1-22 at distance.
Race Summary FORT BONZ has three wins at one mile, gets plenty of pace to rally into and offers good enough value for a win and place bet. He last won 11 months ago from post 10 at Evangeline but spent the winter campaigning at the Fair Grounds. He draws post 2 after starting from post 7 outward in eight of his last nine starts.
      Evangeline Downs - Race #8
#8 FATHER MARK (8-1) Showed some ability in debut season and some morning promise for return.
#5 COMANCHE WARRIOR (2-1) Another layoff runner, ran second in pair of allowance sprints here.
#2 INFINITESIMAL (7-2) Rallied into fast pace and blanket finish, hit board in 8 of 16 at various venues.
Race Summary FATHER MARK was well-backed in three starts as a 3-year-old, winning a 5-1/2F MSW sprint at Evangeline. He hasn’t raced in a year but he worked fast at the Fair Grounds this winter and shows up in this spot for his return. Bet to win and place and play an 5,8/2 ,5, 8/ALL trifecta.

            #6
Handicapped by The Turf Club Analysts

            PURCHASE

            Turf Paradise - Race #4 - Post: 2:26pm - Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,500 Class Rating: 67

            Rating:

            #6 MISS JOANNIE (ML=8/1)
            #4 BONITA DIXIE (ML=7/2)

MISS JOANNIE - Filly hasn't won in her last three starts, but her last win came on February 7th at today's class and distance. BONITA DIXIE - Barrio has this mare going in the perfect event.

            Vulnerable Contenders: #2 X RAY VISION (ML=9/5), #1 FIRST EMERALD (ML=2/1), #5 CHOCOLATE FRECKLES (ML=4/1),

X RAY VISION - This mount hasn't been on the track since Mar 19th. Not even any morning drills. 9/5 is not pegged at the proper price for any mount in a sprint of 5 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a sprint race lately. In this instance, this questionable contender's inability to close in the last event is a cause for concern. FIRST EMERALD - Grueling run down the stretch on Mar 21st and last time around the track. Probably won't have anything to give down the homestretch in today's event. CHOCOLATE FRECKLES - This horse doesn't win here at Turf Paradise. She needs an alternative type of racing surface to show her best. Have to be apprehensive of the recent trend and awesome speed figure in the April 9th race. It was this mare's top at that distance and this one should bounce today.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Winston - MISS JOANNIE - This beautiful animal has the top TrackMaster Power Rating and is a longshot to boot. What's not to like?

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #6 MISS JOANNIE to win if we can get at least 3/2 odds

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE MARCH 24 ALLOWED 3 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $12,500.

              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 6 MIDNIGHT MOONSHINE 3/1
              # 3 STAVROS 2/1
              # 5 SPIRIT'S HERO 4/1
MIDNIGHT MOONSHINE seems to be the wager in here. This racer is ranked high in this group of horses in earnings per start at the distance/surface. Linder has this colt moving well and is a decent selection based on the very good speed figs recorded in sprint races recently. Has formidable Equibase speed figs and has to be considered for a bet in this competition. STAVROS - He has been racing strongly lately while recording very solid speed figures. Ness has a solid winning percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. SPIRIT'S HERO - Earned a sound Equibase Speed Figure in the most recent race. Can run another good one in this contest. Has very good speed figures and has to be considered for a bet for this event.

                Race 1 - Claiming - 7.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $18000 Class Rating: 85

FOR FOUR YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE OCTOBER 24. WEIGHT, 122 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $5,000

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 3 WAR NOVEL 3/1
                # 6 WANDERING WEST 2/1
                # 1 GOLDEN TONE 7/2
WAR NOVEL could be the wager in here. This gelding looks very good for this race since Feliciano has a sharp winning percentage with horses going this distance. Looks very good to be close to the lead at the first call. In this field, this horse is prominent in earnings per start in dirt sprint races. WANDERING WEST - May best this group here, showing very strong figures of late. Potts has this horse moving well and is a respectable pick based on the very good Equibase Speed Figs recorded in sprint races lately. GOLDEN TONE - He has respectable class ratings, averaging 91, and has to be given a shot in this race. Is worth a close look and may be a wager - strong speed figures (76 average) at today's distance and surface lately.

                  Thistledown - Race #8 - Post: 4:20pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $21,900 Class Rating: 72

                  Rating:

                  #3 SHANGHAI PRINCE (ML=2/1)
                  #1 WEEKEND BUZZ (ML=8/1)
                  #2 POWERFUL PHIL (ML=12/1)

SHANGHAI PRINCE - Likes to go to the head of the pack and the fact that today is a shorter distance should be favorable. Has run good races in the first or second starts back off of a vacation. The June 24th race at Thistledown was at a class level of (92). Dropping down in class considerably, so he should be in a good spot. WEEKEND BUZZ - Batista and Trevino perform well when they join forces. It's hard to beat a +92 return on investment for a jockey and handler. The improved speed figures over the last three races is solid. Trevino drops him in this affair ready to win. POWERFUL PHIL - This jock and trainer have a favorable ROI when they join forces. Was in a Starter Allowance race at Mahoning Valley Race Cour last time around the track. That race had a class rating of 83 and he is moving down in this event. A certain strong challenger. Forgive the off the board finish on the off track in the last race. On a non-sloppy track, has a shot in this event. Last raced at Mahoning Valley Race Cour carrying 5 lbs more. The lower weight carried right here should serve him well.

Vulnerable Contenders: #6 SAMMY AND SHORTY (ML=5/2), #4 FIRSTHAND JUSTICE (ML=9/2), #8 RED HOT POWER (ML=5/1),

SAMMY AND SHORTY - Difficult to invest in this mount today. Make him show you something in a sprint event before you play him in a race of 5 1/2 furlongs. FIRSTHAND JUSTICE - The finish of fifth in the last race shows me that this horse may be going out of form. Common speed figure last time out at Mahoning Valley Race Cour at 6 furlongs. Don't think this runner will improve too much in today's race. RED HOT POWER - Granted the last race was strong, finishing first. The lack of any recent activity raises some concerns though.
