Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card with the 0.50 Pick 5 rolling in Race 5, and it has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $1.00 Late
Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

Race 6 (8:40 PM EST)

2-Moonshine Kisses (4-1)-Comes off a sharp gate to wire score at Plainridge and will need a top effort versus this kind. This veteran still loves to win and is in a spot to cash the top check. Does good work at Yonkers winning 15 of 45.
4-Sumomentsomewhere 5/2-Performed well in the Borgata Series despite not winning. Finished 2nd in the consolation after skipping a start. The Burke trainee could be ready to seal the deal tonight.
7-Boiling Oar 5-1-Has already notched 2 wins in 3 Invitational races and just missed in the other start leaving from post 7 last time. Has been freshened up a bit and should be ready for another aggressive try.

Race 7 (9:00 PM EST)

1-Pound for Pound (2-1)-Got on the point last week from post 4 and took no prisoners. Drew off by over 8 lengths in a snappy 151.4. Will use right back versus the same kind and won't be worried the last mile was a fluke.

Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

1-Ben Hope Rulz 3-1-Bumps up after a sharp score with Matt Kakaley between the pipes. Wired the field after a tough opening quarter and now usual pilot Mark MacDonald returns. Could double up with a similar effort.
5-Speed Man N 7/2-This is a drop and pop situation, and George Brennan could be aggressive off the gate. Has enough gate speed to take control, or can benefit from a pocket ride to end up with a picture.

Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

2-Pretty Handsome 3-1-Winless this year (0-11) and has cashed checks facing $40k claimers but hasn’t connected for a picture. Could get off the schneid for 2024 with some class relief now facing $30k claimers.
4-Baron Michael 6-1-Posted a win 3 back at this level and Kakaley could work a stalking trip and roll by down the lane. Doesn’t win often but this is a spot to shine.
6-Dance on the Beach 3-1-Raced well in the last 2 and did hit the board versus $40k claimers. Won against this kind a couple of times recently and has enough gate speed to get a good early seat. Should offer a square price and deserves respect.

Thistledown - Race #3

#2 Bulls N Berry	She has been kind of one-paced through three starts, but she might be a good enough fit with this group while meeting a couple who are likely to chase and fade.
#5 No Violence	She can be tough with the locals after a decent enough try when getting down to a similar price at Turfway last out, and she's not meeting much in this spot today.
#7 Oh Atlanta	She's a proven commodity at this kind of level after the Mahoning try last out, and she might be able to turn in something competitive again while getting Lasix.
Race Summary	Bulls N Berry seems interesting enough from a bit off the pace, and I like that she showed some life when getting in for a tag for the first time last out.

Thistledown - Race #7

#3 Lionistic	Her winning streak ended with the press-and-fade run last out, but she has been given a few months away and might be able to come right back to her better stuff after the tine away.
#2 Datttsafancyfox	She's a reasonable enough alternative if you want to stand against the top choice at what might be a short kind of price, but I wonder if she's going to have to do some of the dirty work of chasing the top choice early.
#5 Market Success	She turns back off the bench with a handful of pretty classy company lines on the page compared to most of these, but I wonder if she'll just be along too late.
Race Summary	Lionistic should get a pretty favorable race flow today if she's ready to flash her typical pace off the four-month break -- guessing she handles these.

Thistledown - Race #8

#8 Panthera's Fate	He resurfaces here on the main track after a couple turf starts in Southern California to open his career, and the barn has typically done solid work at this level.
#1 Stellars In Charge	Pace looks like a good fit off the claiming tries at Laurel, and he might prove best of the pace after being joined by the guy a couple stalls outside of him.
#2 Pace	I don't think he's completely impossible in this spot, but he doesn't have any early speed at all and would probably need a more contested pace than he's going to get to have a shot of getting over the top.
Race Summary	Panthera's Fate races fresh today with a change of scenery, and I don't think there's a ton in here to give him trouble if he handles the new footing.

#4 HEAVENLY VIOLET (5-1)	Circled the field 6-wide, couldn’t reach the winning favorite.
Race Summary	FEEL FREE, unraced until age 6, towers over the field if she breaks alertly and duplicates her maiden romp at this distance. Another red flag went up when she was a vet scratch April 10. It’s an all-or-nothing win bet and straight exactas of 2-1 and 2-4.

Turf Paradise - Race #5

#1 FED GRANT (5-1)	Focused on winning 4-wide rally with blinks on, value remains on switch to turf.
#3 INCREDIBLE MO (5-2)	Earned top speed fig in photo-finish setback but was eased in follow-up try.
#4 IMISSBAYMEADOWS (6-1)	Landed minor awards in 2 of his last 3 on turf at monster odds.
Race Summary	FED GRANT benefited from a rapid pace set by the favorite, but he sustained a 4-wide rally, nonetheless, to spring an 11-1 maiden-breaking upset. He wore blinkers for the first time and can sit an ideal stalking trip from the rail for his first try on the lawn. Bet to win and place.

Turf Paradise - Race #7

#10 PRIME EXAMPLE (4-1)	‘Leads’ by example but can survey the scene from post 10 in speedy field.
#4 DARNQUICK (4-1)	Beaten odds=on favorite in last pair but adapted well to chase mode.
#6 ECONOMICAL (6-1)	Drops below claim level, can add value to gimmick wager tickets.
Race Summary	Class-dropping speed types abound in this 5-1/2F sprint. PRIME EXAMPLE set a rapid pace and got caught by the favorite at 6F off a seven-month layoff. Like him on the cutback in distance with an outside post draw. Bet to win and place.

JETTIN PEGASUS - This mare has higher odds on the morning line than the other entrant from the stable of Radosevich. Better be careful of this angle. Looking at today's class figure, this thoroughbred is encountering an easier bunch than last time out at Mahoning Valley Race Cour. Look for this mare to show better in this event. Last affair at Mahoning Valley Race Cour finishing sixth on the mud is no sign of her true ability. Radosevich gets a break on this horse carrying 5 pounds less than last out. Could make the difference in this event.

Vulnerable Contenders: #3 STAR MABEE (ML=8/5), #1 CHECK OUT LINE (ML=3/1), #4 COWCHI (ML=6/1),

STAR MABEE - This mount hasn't been near the victor at the finish line lately. CHECK OUT LINE - This mount showed very little last time out finishing sixth. Don't see any hint of a reversal of fortune in today's race. COWCHI - 62/49/45, are the lessening speed ratings for this entrant. Unlikely for this horse to make an impact with no success lately in a short distance race.

I've got to go with RESPIRATOR. Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong Equibase speed figs (73 average) at today's distance and surface lately. Must be given a shot based on the very strong Equibase Speed Figure garnered in the last affair. Has been running in the most competitive company of the group of horses as of late. CHASING STARDOM - Looks respectable versus this field and will most likely be one of the leaders. Is a definite contender - given the 77 Equibase Speed Figure from his most recent race. KING SWANSBORO - Is difficult not to examine based on Speed Figures which have been strong - 69 avg - of late. I can't pass on this gelding given one of the top rider and trainer combos on the grounds.

MOVE OVER (GB) - Shows evidence of the look of a money-making play, averaging a solid 80 speed fig which is one of the strongest in this group. Has to be given a chance versus this field displaying solid figs lately and an average speed rating of 87 under similar conditions. KALINE - Will likely be one of the front-runners of the bunch going into the halfway point of the contest.

LIARS CLUB - A wise man taught me to bet on the lone speed horse. Take a look at this horse. This gelding is in nice form. Ended up third on April 1st. REQUISITION - This gelding has higher odds on the morning line than the other entrant from the stable of Davidson. Better beware of this angle.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 JUST A IRISH LAD (ML=7/2), #1 VANGILDER (ML=4/1), #5 HAMAZING WISDOM (ML=4/1),

JUST A IRISH LAD - I don't normally play a morning-line choice that hasn't been to the track in the last 3 weeks. Last raced on April 3rd at Will Rogers Downs, finishing third. Not likely to move up off of that effort in today's race. VANGILDER - The speed fig last time around the track doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the class figure of today's race. Mark this horse as a vulnerable competitor. I don't think this racer likes running on the inside, certainly not out of the one slot. HAMAZING WISDOM - If you keep betting these kind of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be let down often. Will be tough for this horse to beat this bunch off of that last speed figure. Not likely to improve enough to run a figure close enough to today's class figure, so put him on the likely underlays list.
