    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Thistledown - Race #5
#5 Stormin’Unclejack The guy who won that last race is in really good form right now, and I think this one should find a pretty nice trip in behind a couple of fresh pace horses. Something like his last keeps him in the picture.
#2 Holy Synchronicity He has faced some decent groups over the last year, but I worry he might take too much cash with the locals off the Laurel form. Obvious player on class.
#1 Irish Unity Pace tends to stop late, but he might be tighter this time around after the speed-and-fade comeback effort. Not totally impossible, but I’d want a decent price to find out.
Race Summary Stormin’Unclejack has tactical pace that should keep him in touch with the pace players early while watching everything unfold.
    Thistledown - Race #6
#9 Roll A Quarters Pace gave way without much of a fight in that last one, but he’ll return with Lasix today and a good outside draw to prompt the splits the whole way. Interesting bounce-back candidate if the price is right.
#5 Fact Not Fiction He can be tough if he builds on the comeback effort last time around, but I worry a little bit about the price getting short. Player.
#2 Ekati’s Way Expected a touch better from him in that last one, but he might be along late to share here if the chasing types give way.
Race Summary Roll A Quarters needs better today, but there might be some upside while adding Lasix and getting an attack post.
    Thistledown - Race #7
#8 Magic Palace Not sure she has the highest ceiling in here, but I think she might be in line for a dreamy trip while cutting back behind a trio of potential pace players.
#5 Command Strike She might be in the best position to stick around of the potential forward players, as she has at least shown a little grit after an early battle – the others tend to be more all or nothing on the lead.
#1 Wine Me Up Baby I could probably be talked into this one if the price were appealing enough, as there is at least some chance she pops from the fence and never looks back.
Race Summary Magic Palace has some positional route pace that might translate well here while turning back behind a few speedy types who are almost sure to battle early.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Delaware Park - Race #1
#4 DISCREET DEVIL (8-5) Returns to town much better than last year, can’t go beyond in this spot.
#6 OROCOVIX (4-1) Gets class relief, shortens up, will be running late in third start this year.
#1 SCIENCE (6-1) Tailed off last year as a 6-year-old, can rally for minor awards in return.
Race Summary DISCREET DEVIL, claimed for $8,000 at Tampa Bay Downs in his last start, arrives in an ideal spot after he failed to carry his speed 6F against six-figure earner Cajun Hope, who was winning for the third time in his last 11 starts. He sheds 8 pounds and is worth a win and place bet as the favorite.
      Delaware Park - Race #3
#3 PRINCE COLTON (3-1) Hard ridden before backstretch mishap, regrouped, ran third for new barn.
#2 WIZARDOFEZ (8-1) Strong gate works at Belmont to get ready for debut, watch odds.
#1 TWO DOLLAR EDDIE (4-1) Sped off to lead but ‘offered little resistance’ to winner in 12-horse field.
Race Summary PRINCE COLTON recovered from a bad stumble on the backstretch with a 3-wide rally but couldn’t reach the favorites in his first start off the claim. He breezed 5F in 1:01-3/5 since then and gets the nod for a win and place bet.
      Delaware Park - Race #6
#7 MAXIMO MADNESS (8-1) Trying to follow early footsteps of her dam against suspect field.
#5 TIZ VINNO (2-1) Swung to 4-path for stretch drive, out-kicked by the favorite, one to beat.
#2 GETTOTHESTORYIMDONE (3-1) Team Russell class dropper stretches out, can use her speed well.
Race Summary MAXIMO MADNESS draws outside going a route of ground as the only first-time starter in the field. Hoping she runs like her dam, Divine Happiness, a 9-3/4-length MSW winner in her debut and allowance runner-up soon after. Bet to win and place and play a 5,7/2,5,7/ALL trifecta.

            Race 11 - Maiden - 250y on the Dirt. Purse: $17000 Class Rating: 68

QUARTER HORSE 250Y, FOR MAIDENS, TWO YEARS OLD. WEIGHT, 124 LBS.

            RECOMMENDED CHOICES
            # 1 SWEET TRAIN 4/1
            # 9 FARR LYLA 8/1
            # 2 MG KANGURA 3/1
SWEET TRAIN has a competitive shot to take this race. Cannot be disregarded - Eggleston is a very strong conditioner with the babies, winning 18 of his races. Can't overlook the connections here, a 20 winning percentage, one of the best at getting into the winner's circle. FARR LYLA - Cannot be ignored - Eggleston is a sharp conditioner with the babies, winning 18 of his races. Formidable venture today on Lasix. Eggleston has one of the top winning percentages in this group of animals with entries running at this distance and surface. MG KANGURA - Sire is so important in two-year old races and this one's babies have fared admirably while winning at a 19 percent clip.

              Evangeline Downs - Race #1 - Post: 5:30pm - Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $10,000 Class Rating: 80

              Rating:

              #4 BONUS APPRECIATION (ML=8/1)
              #6 HONOR MY SPEED (ML=4/1)

BONUS APPRECIATION - Took a big class drop last out, and I think he may have needed it. Bourgeois enters him at a similar class today. I'd expect an improved performance. This horse coming off a solid contest in the last month is a contender in my opinion. This gelding's last rating is lofty enough to prove victorious here, I'll wager on him back again in today's event. HONOR MY SPEED - Have to like the way Landry has raced this gelding back into shape off the layoff. Horse is well spotted in this sprint and I think he'll run well today.

              Vulnerable Contenders: #5 OVERDELIVER (ML=5/2), #8 SCHNELL (ML=3/1), #9 BARAHIN (ML=9/2),

OVERDELIVER - Hasn't raced or had any works since Dec 19th. Not much value on this favorite. No success for this less than sharp equine in a short distance race over the last 60 days tells me that this gelding is in a very difficult situation SCHNELL - Hard to invest in at 3/1 odds after the two most recent efforts. Should have at least hit the board in the last 60 days in a sprint race to be worth a shot at modest odds in a sprint. BARAHIN - This horse is always in the money, but just doesn't finish first. Tough to play him on the top end.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #4 BONUS APPRECIATION on the nose if you can get odds of 3/1 or more

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NOT WON TWO RACES SINCE AUGUST 22, 2023 OR WHICH HAVE NOT WON A RACE SINCE JANUARY 1, 2024 OR WHICH HAVE NEVER WON FOUR RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 119 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE SINCE MARCH 22 ALLOWED 2 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $11,000, FOR EACH $1,000 TO $9,000 2 LBS.

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 2 FORWARD MOTION 3/1
                # 4 JOE'S HAD ENOUGH 8/1
                # 3 BREAKING STONES 7/2
FORWARD MOTION is the strongest wager in this race. Lately Ferraro has provided risk takers with a decent winning percentage with horses racing in dirt sprint races. Ferraro has him trained very well to break promptly out of the gate. With a formidable 90 Equibase Speed Figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this competition. JOE'S HAD ENOUGH - Conditioner boasts solid win numbers at this distance and surface. BREAKING STONES - Have to examine solely on class, with some of the most favorable class figures of this field. Had one of the most competitive speed figures of this group of animals in his last outing.

                  Rating:

                  #4 SERENE WARRIOR (ML=5/2)

SERENE WARRIOR - This mare is in good physical condition. Ended up first on May 4th. This jock/conditioner duo has been producing a very lucrative ROI, right at +358. If this mare gets out of the gate cleanly, she'll be tough to catch.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #7 I HAVE COURAGE (ML=3/1), #6 CAR LADY (ML=7/2), #1 MIKEY'S JEWEL (ML=4/1),

I HAVE COURAGE - This thoroughbred just hasn't looked fit of late. CAR LADY - Where is the pace? None to be found in here to set things up for this horse. Not likely that the speed rating she notched on March 22nd will be enough in this event. MIKEY'S JEWEL - Tough to put any dough on this mare on the top end. Likes to end up on the board though. Can't really be sure that the last speed rating of 63 is true since it was attained on a track listed as good. Earned a substandard fig last out in a $4,000 Claiming race on May 4th. Unlikely to see an improved performance off of that rating.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - SERENE WARRIOR - This mare has the top last speed figure at Penn National. Must be considered in your gambling.
