    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

    Churchill Downs - Race #6
#6 Killshave Beauty I'm worried that there are a couple other decent forward players lined up today, but she almost has to be capable of something better than she showed last out -- she was 9/2 that day, so that was a disappointment for a lot of folks.
#10 Coco Crush She would benefit if all the potential speed hooked up, and I wonder if she might still have some upside with just three races in her career and that comeback score under her belt. Interested to see what she brings today.
#4 Cecile She has been a good fit in a couple stakes spots in recent starts, so she's clearly capable with this kind with her baseline effort. One of the ones.
Race Summary Killshave Beauty should offer a slightly better number today, and she might be able to stick around better in the second start off the layoff after the speed-and-fade comeback.
    Churchill Downs - Race #7
#9 Scotland He's meeting a good group with some pretty serious and classy running lines, but a lot of those types are a bit more proven as two-turn players, and this guy has shown the versatility to do a little bit of anything. First jump for home?
#10 Dreaming of Kona He's not quite as classy as some of these, but there are a few lines on his page that stack up well enough to think he can land a piece of this at a price.
#7 Extra Anejo He's back off the bench with pretty imposing 3-year-old form that ended with a try in the Haskell, but I worry he's going to take a lot of cash. Tough call for me, but obviously talented enough to land this.
Race Summary Scotland should be in a good spot throughout, and I'm interested to see if I can get Dreaming of Kona in the frame for a piece of this at a price with some of the logical players.
    Churchill Downs - Race #8
#4 Pleasestoptalking She drilled a group at Horseshoe Indianapolis to graduate last out, and I'm willing to take that at face value as part of her overall improving form. Would be interested at something a bit shorter than the 15/1 ML price.
#7 Thorny Tactical player posted another easy win off the claim last time out, and she's a good fit in this spot with that sharp Oaklawn form. The one to beat, but I don't know that she *has* to win this.
#9 Low Country Magic The debut score suggests she's a player here, but I worry just a little bit about her flashing outside pace in a spot with a at least a couple other mild forward players. Enough to like.
Race Summary Pleasestoptalking stepped forward nicely when sent two turns for the first time earlier this month, and she could have a chance to step up and score right back at a midrange price.

      #3
      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Gulfstream Park - Race #1
#3 ALWAYS DRAMA (8-1) Money poured in after long absence, ran second, takes class hike.
#5 DOWN IN THE BAYOU (4-1) Takes big class drop, sheds 10 pounds for hot barn.
#6 SAVE US MELANIA (8-5) Joseph acquisition has best numbers, tries conventional dirt for first time.
Race Summary ALWAYS DRAMA chased a 7-2 first-time starter around the track and gained late to preserve the runner-up spot in a heavily bet return off a 2-year layoff. She showed enough in that 6F sprint at Tampa Bay Downs to warrant a playback at an inflated price today. Bet to win and place.
      Gulfstream Park - Race #3
#6 AMERICAN OF COURSE (2-1) Starts fresh off claim, plays catch-me-if-you can yet again.
#1 HITS DIFFERENT (9-2) Late-running stablemate of ‘American’ tries sprint for new connections.
#7 CYMBAL COURT (8-5) Floated and drifted wide in last pair, ran third, figures close-up throughout.
Race Summary AMERICAN OF COURSE led at the stretch call four times and was within a length of the lead three other times in her last seven starts, but failed to win. She shortens up to 5-1/2F off the Joseph claim and lands in a dream spot to maximize her speed. Bet to win and place and play 6-1 and 6-7 exactas.
      Gulfstream Park - Race #4
#2 JOE DI BAGGIO (12-1) Does best running for this barn, worth a price stab at proven level.
#4 ENSIGN PARKER (1-1) Tried and drifted at 7F, won 3 of 6 against better in prior sprints.
#7 GRAND VALLEY (8-1) ‘Kept on’ for third in last two 6F sprints at Tampa, won twice at GP in fall.
Race Summary JOE DI BAGGIO won easily and just missed at this level, earning his top speed figures for a barn that re-claimed the 8-year-old twice. He couldn’t recover from a bumpy start in a five-horse field in a $12,500 claimer last out, but is worth a win and place bet at an inflated price. Also play a 2,4/2,4/ALL trifecta.

            Gulfstream Park - Race #8 - Post: 4:20pm - Maiden Claiming - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $36,000 Class Rating: 74

            Rating:

            #6 SEVEN ANNIVERSARY (ML=6/1)

SEVEN ANNIVERSARY - This gelding likes to sit just off the pace and the way things shape up here, he should get an ideal trip. Baxter brings him back again. I recommend you stay with this hot gelding. Trainer, Baxter, has been deliberate with this gelding off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today. Lets try to beat the favorites with this gelding. Just missed last out, but ran a respectable race.

            Vulnerable Contenders: #1 ALWAYS DIALED (ML=2/1), #8 CALYPSO CHARLIE (ML=5/2), #7 BIVOL (ML=7/2),

ALWAYS DIALED - Never really did much at all last time out on May 9th. Hard to bet on in today's race. Notched a mediocre speed figure last time out in a $35,000 Maiden Claiming race on May 9th. Improbable to see an improved performance off of that fig. CALYPSO CHARLIE - This mount hasn't been coming close at the finish line of late. BIVOL - Hasn't finished in the money in any sprint contests lately. Doubtful to see him doing it this time around either.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - SEVEN ANNIVERSARY - Posting a better speed rating each of his last couple of races. This gelding is a prime candidate to win today.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #6 SEVEN ANNIVERSARY to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds

Race 1 - Maiden Special Weight - 8.5f on the Turf. Purse: $43520 Class Rating: 86

IND - R3 - FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND UPWARD. THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 124 LBS. IF THIS RACE IS TAKEN OFF THE TURF, IT WILL BE RUN AT 1 MILE AND 1/16 ON THE MAIN TRACK.

              RECOMMENDED CHOICES
              # 15 FRENCH BREAD 20/1
              # 8 PILKINGTON 9/2
              # 3 MOHTAFIL 6/1
FRENCH BREAD is the best wager in this competition especially at such a decent 20/1. Going off blinkers can produce noticeable speed increases. Will more than likely be one of the early speedsters of the pack going into the midpoint of the affair. Has to be considered versus this group displaying strong figs lately and an average speed rating of 79 under similar conditions. PILKINGTON - Put up a strong speed figure in the last race. Can run another good one in this race. MOHTAFIL - He should be given consideration given the solid speed figures. Change in Lasix (with second time Lasix) may be the secret to a turnaround.

Race 7 - Optional Claiming - 8.0f on the Turf. Purse: $35000 Class Rating: 81

FOR ACCREDITED LA BRED THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES OR CLAIMING PRICE $50,000 WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 118 LBS.; OLDER, 123 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE AT A MILE OR OVER SINCE APRIL 30, 2024 ALLOWED 3 LBS. SUCH A RACE SINCE MARCH 30, 2024 ALLOWED 5 LBS.

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 3 TUSSLING CHARLIE 2/1
                # 5 SINGLE SHOT 9/2
                # 1 JACKSON D 8/1
TUSSLING CHARLIE looks strong to best this field. Has very good speed figures and has to be considered for a bet for this event. Win percentage under similar conditions may be the key for this gelding. Will almost certainly compete quite well in the early speed contest which bodes well with this field. SINGLE SHOT - Has a strong shot in this competition if you like back class. Is worth thinking about and may be a wager - strong speed figures (73 average) at today's distance and surface recently. JACKSON D - He looks very strong in this slot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the midpoint. Has run soundly when racing a turf route race.

                  Delaware Park - Race #4 - Post: 2:00pm - Claiming - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $13,500 Class Rating: 63

                  Rating:

                  #5 ENCHANTMENT (FR) (ML=3/1)
                  #4 WHATTA NOTION (ML=8/1)

ENCHANTMENT (FR) - Likes to go to the lead and the fact that today is a shorter distance should help. I like when a race sets up this way. This mare has the lone pace to demolish this field. Was in a $16,000 Claiming race at Tampa Bay Downs last race out. That race had a class number of 73 and she is moving down in this field. A certain solid contender. I like the fact that this mare's last speed figure, 63, is tops in this bunch. WHATTA NOTION - Looking at today's class figure, this thoroughbred is up against an easier field than in the last race at Charles Town. Looking over this filly's PPs I see that the last time she tried this distance she got a speed rating that would be good enough to win today's event. Is ranked totally number one in the field in EPS (earnings per start). A powerful performance in today's race will boost that bankroll. When a horse drops at least five lbs (like this one is), you must take notice. It may not seem like much, but could make the difference.

Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SHEZA NASTY GIRL (ML=2/1), #3 CARSONS COOL WOMEN (ML=4/1), #1 SKY BUY (ML=6/1),

SHEZA NASTY GIRL - Hasn't finished in the money in any sprint events lately. Doubtful to see her doing it this time around either. Just can't wager on this horse. Didn't show me anything in the last race or on Mar 17th. CARSONS COOL WOMEN - The event on April 14th was versus maiden claimers. Pass on this one today versus the tougher group. This filly earned a speed fig in her last race which probably isn't good enough in today's event. SKY BUY - This steed showed very liitle last time finishing fifth. Don't see any hint of any change today. I cannot play this confirmed non-winner. Gets the job fulfilled from time to time. Pedestrian speed figure last race out at Delaware Park at 6 furlongs. Don't feel this pony will improve too much in today's event.
