Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 5/31/24

    May 31, 2024
Jeff Siegel’s Santa Anita “What You Need to Know
    Friday, May 31, 2024

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

The selections are posted at 6:00 a.m. and updated later in the morning to reflect late scratches and changes (approximately 10:30 a.m.). For additional commentary, follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

    RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 1-Running Rio; 4-Runnin On Promises; 3-Lee’s Baby Girl
    Backups/savers: 7-She’s My Flame.

Forecast: The opener is a five furlong raffle on turf for juvenile fillies. Anything goes. Running Rio didn’t bring much more than a ham sandwich at auction ($12,000) but the daughter of Street Boss displayed good speed without ever being asked in a gate drill May 15 for a barn that always is dangerous (25%, strong ROI) with the first time starter angle. From the rail she should be prominent throughout, perhaps even on the lead, so in an open fray she may be as good as any. Runnin On Promises> was a distant but willing third in a very fast race in her debut earlier this month and with that bit of experience behind her the J. Bonde-trained daughter of Promises Fulfilled certainly has a right to step forward. Lee’s Baby Girl was a bit of green when showing a tendency to drift out in a gate drill with stablemate What About Q last week but earned a solid clocking (:47.4hg) to finish two lengths in front. She should be able to act with these.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 2: Post: 1:33 PT Grade: B
    Main Ticket: 6-Lansdowne (GB)
    Backups/savers: 1-Windribbon.

Forecast: Lansdowne (GB) has changed hands in his last three starts, most recently for $25,000 for trainer S. Knapp, who scored with him a few races back and reunites the mid-level plater with “win rider” D. Herrara. Drawn comfortably outside in this six runner $32,000 sprint, the English-bred gelding has won three of five (with one second) over the local main track with numbers that fit at this level and a pace scenario that projects him to be on or near the lead.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 3: Post: 2:007 PT Grade: X
    Main Ticket: R Heisman
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: R Heisman was beaten at 50 cents on the dollar when a distant second in his debut but showed enough talent in a troubled journey from the rail to be privately purchased by trainer P. Miller soon after the race. The son of Far From Over was stuck in traffic down the backstretch, got clear outside and finished eagerly in a fast race while winding up seven lengths clear of the rest in a performance that is more than good enough to graduate today at an extremely short price.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 4: Post: 2:39 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: 2-Refocus; 4-Known Idea.
    Backups/Savers: none.

Forecast: It’s hard to say if Refocus is most comfortable as a late-running turf sprinter but the way he quickened in a recent state-bred dash in a better than average affair gives hope that he can produce another winning lack kick in his first try around two turns. There should be plenty of pace signed on to compliment his new found style, so if taken back and patiently ridden again the son of Pavel can be dangerous right back. Known Idea , solid on numbers but like our top pick unproven around two turns, has plenty of speed but will have to deal with at least a couple of other front running types in a pace scenario that should test him early. The J. Sadler barn has solid stats with the sprint-to-route angle and this son of Goldencents is reunited with “win rider” H. Berrios, so if he can switch off early he should be prominent throughout as the likely favorite and one to beat.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 5: Post: 3:11 PT Grade: B+
    Main Ticket: Super Enticing
    Backups/savers: 2-Ur in Trouble.

Forecast: Super Enticing returns following a seven month vacation and appears to have trained well enough at San Luis Rey Downs to be fit and ready to graduate in this soft maiden $40,000 claiming dash for fillies and mares. The P. Miller-trained sophomore is a first time Lasix user with numbers from last year that are more than good enough to beat this field, and with top rider J. Hernandez (24% with this barn) taking the call the daughter of Enticed should be a short price in a shallow affair.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 6: Post: 3:44 PT Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 2-Malibu Coast; 3-Tom and Jazzy.
    Backups/savers: 4-National Generaux (IRE).

Forecast: Malibu Coast logically shows up in a claimer for the first time and may have found his friends after a series of disappointing runs (off the board in four straight races) when facing considerably tougher rivals. The Malibu Moon gelding has speed figures that are good enough to act at this $30,000 level and though well beaten in his most recent start the M. McCarthy-trained gelding actually equaled his career top number in a hot allowance race that was simply out of his range. The switch to J. Hernandez is significant. Tom and Jazzy was awful when finishing last of six as the favorite in a similar restricted (nw-3) affair earlier this month but absolutely can bounce back in his first start since behind haltered by trainer S. Knapp (19% with this angle) and switching to jockey A. Aguilar, who got plenty of run out of him last year. The son of Tom’s Tribute is a two-time winner over the local lawn with numbers that make him a major player.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 7: Post: 4:18 PT Grade: X
    Main Ticket: 4-Warren’s Showgirl
    Backups/savers: none.

Forecast:: Warren’s Showgirl was nosed out in a similar bottom rung maiden $30,000 claimer over this track and distance earlier this month while more than 13 lengths clear of the rest and earning a speed figure that simply towers over her six rivals. With two easy breezes in the interim to tick her over, the daughter of Clubhouse Ride will be an odds-on choice to finally graduate in her ninth career start.

    __________________________________________________ ____________________________
    RACE 8: Post: 4:50 PT Grade: C+
Main ticket: Jessebear; 9-Back On Track; 5-Quantum Innergy
    Backups/savers: 8-Issa Court; 2-Blonde Bombshell.

Forecast: Jessebear has numbers that fit and a maiden victory over this course and distance earlier this year, so we’ll put the daughter of Misremembered on top in this somewhat shallow first level allowance turf miler for state-bred fillies and mares. She projects to draft into an ideal second flight, stalking position and then be able to grind away from the quarter pole home. Back On Track is drawn farther out than we’d prefer but in her first try around two turns the daughter of Prospect Park projects to drop over, get some cover, and then have her chance to kick home when given her cue. Quantum Innergy has some ground to make up in the speed figure department but with only three starts on her resume the daughter of Clubhouse Ride has plenty of room for improvement. She had plenty of help up front when graduating over the local lawn at this one mile trip last time out but with a solid pace to chase once again she should be heard from again close home.

Al Cimaglia: Meadowlands Late Pick 4 Analysis

      May 31, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
The Meadowlands has a 14-race card featuring New Jersey Sires Stakes Finals. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 10. The sequence has a $50,000 guaranteed pool with a 15% takeout, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 10 10:05 PM EST)

7-Karl (1/5)-Talented 2-year-old has won its first 2 starts of the year by over 10-lengths combined and is 11 of 12 lifetime. Has the looks of a generational trotter and it would take a really bumpy trip to not be 12 for 13 lifetime after this race is over.

      Race 11 (10:25 PM EST)

1-Toto Hanover (2-1)-Blasted out from post 7 in last and made every call a winning one. Used a 26.2 opening quarter to get the lead from post 7 and tonight won't need to work so hard to take control. The race should go through Scott Zeron and this 5-year-old who has won 3 of 4 at M1.
5-Apertif (4-1)-Hasn't been able to solve Toto Hanover in 2 tries this year, last time had the 9-hole. With this post draw Dexter Dunn has enough gate speed to land in the pocket. If that trip happens, should have the best chance of upsetting the chalk with a trip-out win.

      Race 12 (10:45 PM EST)

2-Marg In Charge (10-1)-Not seeing a standout in this affair so will look for some solid prices. Marg needs an efficient trip to take a picture and Dunn could provide one with this post draw. That same plan worked to perfection on 11-11 with Dunn at the controls from this same post and paid a healthy mutuel.
7-Walcango (9/2)-My take is the price could be better than the morning line following breaking stride in the last 2 starts. Did get bet down to 8/5 versus this kind 2 back and may have met a beatable field. Has only 1 win in 14 races at the Big M but did finish 2nd in six starts, and the winners in the last 10 races are not in this field.

      Race 13 (11:05 PM EST)

6-Bobcat Bay (3-1)-Drops again looking for an elusive win. Left hard from the 9-hole and got a good early seat but the trip took its toll. Trainer Jeff Smith's barn has been clicking posting 30% winners over the last 30 days. Should get a good early seat and with a well-timed move could come off cover to win.
7-Straight Talk (5/2)-Came off the bench, last start was on 11-18, was handled conservatively and raced from the back. Paced a 54.1 back half after being 11-lengths back at the 1/2 pole. Should be tighter and better tonight.

      $4.00 Pick 4

      7/1,5/2,7/6,7

Penn National All-Turf Pick 4 Friday, May 31

        May 31, 2024 | By Frank Carulli
        PENN NATIONAL ALL-TURF PICK 4
        Friday, May 31, 2024

The $400,000 Penn Mile (G-3) will be the anchor leg of an all-turf stakes Pick 4 this Friday, May 31 at Penn National. All four legs of the sequence drew double-digit entries, carry six-figure purses and will be contested going a route of ground. Here’s a closer look and a suggested Pick 4 play:
PEN 3rd race (6:00 p.m. EST) -- IN A SPIN, third in last year’s $100,000 Lyphard behind the 1-to-9 favorite, ran second to recent Grade 3 winner Neecie Marie (4-7 on turf, $330k) in a follow-up stakes try against Pennsylvania-bred fillies and mares last fall. ON THE SHORTLIST posted front-end wins from posts 7, 8 and 9 on firm, good and yielding footing last year, now draws post 10 for her seasonal debut. DREAM CHASER is a viable longshot at 8-1 in her first try on turf. She showed steady improvement as a 3-year-old last year, winning twice and finishing a troubled third behind Grade 2-placed Headland (11-44, $754k) and Grade 3 winner Apple Picker (5-14, $401k). She gained in the stretch on the top two finishers in a useful comeback sprint. PRINCESS JAVONCIA, a proven turf miler but 0-for-5 at this distance, projects an ideal stalking trip in her second start since January. She pressed the pace and finished behind three next-out winners two starts back at Tampa Bay Downs, unable to break Paper Mansion’s (11-44, $230k) string of five consecutive wire-to-wire victories on the lawn.
PEN 4th race (6:35 p.m. EST) -- A WESTERN YARN chased slow fractions and ‘dug in’ to finish second when last seen in a September turf allowance, but he can make good use of his speed in this spot from the rail and get the jump on most of his main rivals. The horse he chased, Great King, posted 91 and 93 Beyers in allowance company at Santa Anita in two starts on firm footing this year. Local star FIERCE AND STRONG should lead for as far as he goes off a sharp comeback sprint victory that improved his record to 4-for-5 on the Penn National lawn. He gets the class test today. JOHN DUTTON rallied into photo-finish view in two turf allowances last year but was no threat in a deep allowance field last out at Keeneland. He lures Prat to ride and should be on the ticket. FLETCHER, third in last year’s Penn Mile at 98-1, opts for the $100,000 With Anticipation against state-breds this year. He worked forwardly for his scheduled seasonal debut on turf and won on the front end after the race was switched to the main track. MARKET MAVEN, disqualified from victory in last fall’s Maryland Million Classic, has never run on turf, but he ran two of his best races for this barn and must be respected at a price.
PEN 5th race (7:10 p.m. EST) -- POUNCE broke outward from this post and never recovered as the favorite in the Grade 2 Appalachian on soft turf at Keeneland, but she merits a second look off her win in the Grade 3 Herecomesthebride Stakes at Gulfstream Park in the race prior. She took back from the outside post, trailed into the far turn, advanced between runners and surged past the two trip-sitting favorites to prevail. She is our top choice in the $150,000 Penn Oaks but by no means a solo play. PINK POLKADOTS posted a pair of easy wire-to-wire victories on firm turf to start her career and the Friday weather forecast should suit her well. NICE AS PIE rallied from 11th to get beat 2-3/4 lengths in a tune-up 5-1/2F turf sprint after she won her previous four starts on Turfway Park’s synthetic surface by a combined 16-1/2 lengths. NEOM BEACH shook a duel at the top of the stretch and went down fighting against the co-favorite in a one-mile stakes at Oaklawn Park. The daughter of multimillionaire turf router Giant’s Causeway returns to the lawn for the first time since her debut 10 months ago. Her dam’s offspring are 11/3-2-1 going long on the grass.
PEN 6th race (7:45 p.m. EST) -- TRIKARI sprung a 47-1 shocker in the Grade 2 American Turf on Kentucky Derby Day at Churchill Downs, repelling a stretch challenge by favorite Legend of Time – a Grade 2 winner at Aqueduct last Friday – and surging clear in the final sixteenth. He moves from the inside to the outside, seeking a stakes three-peat with jockey Umberto Rispoli in the featured Penn Mile. FIRST WORLD WAR was entered in the $150,000 Ceasar’s Handicap at Horseshoe Indianapolis May 15 but shows up here after heavy rains wiped out the card. He led between calls late but got beat in a photo-finish in the Mucho Macho Man Stakes three starts back, prevailed from up-close in the Grade 3 Kitten’s Joy at Gulfstream while defeating recent stakes victor FREEDOM PRINCIPLE (#8 today) and several others who earned their top speed figure, then failed to factor on soft footing in the Grade 3 Transylvania at Keeneland.

        Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
        PEN 3rd Race: 2, 5, 8, 10
        PEN 4th Race: 1, 3, 5, 6, 11
        PEN 5th Race: 4, 6, 9, 10
        PEN 6th Race: 4, 10
        Cost for 50-cent ticket: $80

          #5
          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Churchill Downs - Race #2
#7 Patty Van Twinkle There are a couple decent tries on her page already, and she gets down for a tag for the first time today with the kind of one-paced form that might play well in this softer spot.
#2 Lite It Up Louie She makes sense while dropping for a tag, but I worry the price is going to get shorter than I'd be excited about. Practical contender, but not a lot of enthusiasm here for me.
#8 Miss Ruth She showed pace before fading in the debut run, but I wouldn't be shocked to see her stick around better with that race under her belt while cutting the tag in half.
Race Summary Patty Van Twinkle only made a mild move on the synthetic at Turfway back in January, and she looks like a good fit overall with this group with a strong company line to her credit in her only flat run.
          Churchill Downs - Race #7
#1 Everso Mischevious Grade II winner comes back after a dull run in the Cigar Mile in December, but he's a handful in here if he gets back to anything like his form prior to that dud. Deserving short price should land this if he can work a trip from the fence.
#5 Take a Stand She should be an OK price while racing against the boys in this high-level, mostly open allowance, but she is bringing really good form and some imposing company lines with her. Winner of the last rattled off a couple stakes scores since, and the three-back winner landed a Grade III recently. Considered her on top, but maybe she's the price player to connect with the chalk.
#3 Happy American He just might not be getting back to some of that really good New Orleans form from two season back, but he has also been in with some pretty tough groups with some depth. Might be enough to share today.
Race Summary Everso Mischevious should hit hard in this spot, but I seriously considered Take a Stand as well -- think she might get a good run of things with some deceptively good form.
          Churchill Downs - Race #8
#10 Camaro Z His form has been pretty tough to argue with since he was first sent around two turns, and he handled an off-turf stakes group in New Orleans last out. Show horse that day was impressive here a few weeks back. Lots to like at a midrange price.
#9 Clyde's Got a Gun Top choice will get a big jump on him, but I otherwise wouldn't argue much with anyone who landed here. He goes second off the break with reliable turf form. Dangerous.
#8 Desert Duke His form declined a bit toward the end of last year, but he has been in with some pretty solid groups in the last year and has some room to bounce back fresh today.
Race Summary Camaro Z got really good going long at Fair Grounds this season, and I'm hoping he'll be able to bring something similar here with a first-over trip waiting for him.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Penn National - Race #1
#3 PORTAL ONE (5-1) Three-peat romp to start year, kept quality company in two subsequent sprints.
#4 ROMANTIC GAMBLE (7-2) Worked :47.1 bullet off claim, could show it on the class drop.
#6 REDEEM EDDIE (5-2) – Late rush in both May starts to finish second, the latest at this level.
Race Summary PORTAL ONE appears to have taken a couple steps backwards after he won three in a row by a combined 15-3/4 lengths to begin his 8-year-old season. But the next-out winners he faced in his last two starts -- Keeping It Country (8-22, $167k), Magic Spin (8-36, $206k) and Lost In Newyork (7-13, $122k) – had a lot to do with it. Bet him to win and place at an inflated price.
            Penn National - Race #7
#3 EAGLES CRY (8-1) Rallied for a 5/1-3-1 mark recently to top $100k in 6F earnings, tries stakes company.
#7 GET SET (3-1) Swept 4-wide to command on turn en route to 97 Beyer speed figure last out.
#4 MEMORY BOUQUET (12-1) Chased fast pace and tired, can carry speed farther in third start for Kreiser.
Race Summary EAGLES CRY rallied into a slow pace set by the winning favorite and closed the gap late to finish second two starts back at this distance. He made an outside bid in a 7F follow-up race at Parx but couldn’t sustain it. Bet to win and place and play a 3-4-7 exacta box.
            Penn National - Race #10
#4 CLASSY SADIE (5-2) Fired blank in latest, prior running lines would be plenty good in this spot.
#1 HELLO GRACIE (4-1) Can stalk and pounce on good pace set-up from the rail.
#2 DESI’S REWARD (7-2) Good first gear, tries to recapture 2023 form in third start this year.
Race Summary CLASSY SADIE ran in a tougher condition at Parx and her numbers translate well in a field that is a combined 20/0-2-4 this year. She disappeared in her last start and starts for new connections, but have to believe her best wins this. Bet to win and place.

                  Woodbine - Race #2 - Post: 1:39pm - Maiden Claiming - 7.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $27,400 Class Rating: 66

                  Rating:

                  #1 HAAHEE (ML=2/1)

HAAHEE - This gelding is in superb form right now. Finished third in the last race and comes back soon. After the contest aboard this horse on May 18th, the rider is going to be in tune with the gelding much better. 44-54-59 are last 3 speed ratings. Improving each time out is something he should do again in this race.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #7 SING DIXIE (ML=3/1), #4 SEATTLE DOWN UNDER (ML=7/2), #5 SAILINGTHEISLANDS (ML=6/1),

SING DIXIE - 3/1 is not worth the risk for any thoroughbred in a sprint of 7 furlongs that hasn't hit the board in a sprint event lately. SEATTLE DOWN UNDER - Just can't bet on any vulnerable equine right back after he doesn't end up on the board after any very long layoff. Difficult to wager on this mount this time out. Make him show you something in a sprint contest before you wager on him in a race of 7 furlongs. This pony didn't go to the head of the pack and didn't make up any ground in the stretch last time he ran. SAILINGTHEISLANDS - Would have to get much more than the oddsmaker's morning line of 6/1 to bet on this horse.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 HAAHEE to win if you can get at least 1/1 odds
                  EXACTA WAGERS: None

                    # 9 SIR GREYLIND 5/2
                    # 3 BRILLIANT MAN 6/1
                    # 6 LIAM'S JOURNEY 3/1
SIR GREYLIND has a decent shot to take this race. Could best this group of horses in this race here, showing quite good figures of late. Has been running solidly lately and will probably be up on the lead early on. Must be given consideration given the class of races run recently. BRILLIANT MAN - Look for a solid pace improvement from this horse who enters on Lasix today. Must be given a chance - I like the figs from the last contest. LIAM'S JOURNEY - Strong average Equibase Speed Figs in dirt route races make this animal a contender. Win percentage one of the best in this group of animals.

                      # 9 ANOINT 6/1
                      # 5 PRINCESS JAVONCIA 9/2
                      # 8 IN A SPIN 7/2
ANOINT looks very good to best this field. Players should probably take a good look at this one as this mare has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this field. Could best this group of animals based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 91 - of her last effort. Has posted reliable Equibase Speed Figures in turf route races in the past. PRINCESS JAVONCIA - Could wake up with Lasix change (now going off Lasix) today. Merryman has her trained solidly to break swiftly out of the gate. IN A SPIN - Has to be carefully examined here on the basis of the figs in the speed realm alone. With a nice class figure average of 93, has one of the top class advantages in this group of horses.

                        Emerald Downs - Race #3 - Post: 7:56pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $9,500 Class Rating: 74

                        Rating:

                        #3 UNCLE JUJU (ML=5/2)
                        #5 CHARLIE'S MAN (ML=3/1)

UNCLE JUJU - When Bean gives Lopez a leg up on any steed, you got to know that with their win pct you have more than a fighting chance. Have to like this colt today. If you take a look at his PP lines you see a definite pattern, getting closer with each and every race. I like to bet on this angle, a pony coming back off a good effort within the last 30 days. CHARLIE'S MAN - This gelding likes to sit just off the pace and the way things shape up here, he should get a 'dream' trip. I like the way this gelding's finish positions have gotten better with each start recently. A sign of a thoroughbred coming into top form. This gelding is in good physical condition. Ran first on May 2nd. I like this gelding. Has the top earnings per race in this one.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #6 NATION OF FAITH (ML=4/1), #4 VALIDATE (ML=9/2), #1 ROYAL CANDY (ML=6/1),

NATION OF FAITH - Should have at least finished in the money in the last couple of months in a short distance event to be worth a shot at low odds in a sprint. VALIDATE - Just cannot play this mount. Didn't show me anything positive last time around the track or on September 17th. No value in wagering on this entrant. Probably won't improve off that May 12th race. ROYAL CANDY - Difficult to bet on any mount to turn things around if there is no large gain to taking the shot.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: #3 UNCLE JUJU is the play if we get odds of 5/2 or better
