Al Cimaglia: Yonkers Raceway Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 3, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Yonkers Raceway has a 9-race card. The 0.50 Pick 5 rolls in Race 5, and the sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool. The $1.00 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 6, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 6 (8:40 PM EST)

2-Fulsome (3-1)-Showed good gate speed at M1 in last but didn’t finish with enough gusto to win. Joe B will probably work the same plan and he could land on top. Should respect chances, hasn’t been in this soft at Yonkers in a long time.
5-Karloo Bradley N (7/2)-Drops to spot to shine, Jason Bartlett could leave and get a pocket ride. That type of journey could mean a trip to the winner’s circle.

    Race 7 (9:00 PM EST)

2-Funatthebeach N (7/2)-Classy veteran rolled by down the lane against this condition in typical fashion. Faces the same kind and the pace could be more lively tonight. That won’t hurt chances if Jordan Stratton rolls off cover.
4-Rockin Jukebox (3-1)-This 10-year-old might be able to muscle his way to get on the engine or at least land in a close-up seat. Best to not overlook, fits and has won 22% of its Yonkers starts.

    Race 8 (9:20 PM EST)

2-Major Desire (4-1)-Draws inside which makes the 7-year-old a player at this class and gets a positive driver change in Jason Bartlett. This is a logical use.
5-Ozone Blue Chip (3-1)-Makes its 3rd start at this level since being claimed by conditioner Ricky Bucci for himself. Raced better in last but got a bumpy trip, best to respect chances of cashing the top check tonight.

    Race 9 (9:40 PM EST)

3-Arden Messi N (3-1)-Comes off setting a new lifetime mark of 149.4. That’s a performance worth noting even though it happened at Philly. Takes a double bump up, so should be a fair price, and will use versus this bunch.
5-All Alone (9/5)-Morning line chalk drops to a spot to shine and should have his way with this crew. Many will probably single but can’t completely trust the 4-year-old. Will respect, this is the Engblom-Bartlett combo is at the controls.

    $1.00 Late Pick 4

    2,5/2,4/2,5/3,5
    Total Bet=$16

      Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #1
#2 Blah Blah World She didn't show much in a couple of modest tries with tougher at Gulfstream back in October 2022, but she's back with cheaper off the long layoff and might have potential from off the pace in a race without much finishing punch.
#6 Botita She might get the right kind of trip while just in behind a couple more committed forward players, and she should easily get first jump and hold any finishing players.
#7 Isola There are some lines on the page that would make her tough, but she tends to give away ground late and might not offer the most appealing price today. I don't know...
Race Summary Top two look tough in here, but Blah Blah World might have some ability to punch home in a race that is really lacking late run.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #5
#1 Swigert She's up in class for this one after a useful run off the break at Belterra, and she might have a little upside while getting back to the scene of the graduation score.
#6 Award Tour Nothing wrong with her form so far, and she handled the local footing just fine in that graduation run last time out. Obvious player while back in a reasonable spot to try winners.
#2 Mary Katherine She was competitive for a similar price in Florida, and her late ability could serve her well. Her only local run produced her only career win.
Race Summary Swigert might find a decent trip from a bit off the pace from the inside, and she's right in the mix if she has some upside in the second start off the break.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#5 Golden Dagger She already owns a win over synthetic footing at Turfway, and she's capable of something better than she showed last time out when racing fresh on the Keeneland turf. Wouldn't be surprised to see her handle these.
#8 Protectthewitness Positional pace owns a couple running lines that would keep her in the mix while rising off the claim, and any move forward in the second start back would keep her in the hopper with these.
#9 Chasing Spring She ran well in her two local starts last season, and she'll go second off the break after a really flat comeback run on the Churchill dirt. Expecting better.
Race Summary Golden Dagger should find a good tracking spot while getting around two turns for the first time, and I'm willing to forgive the comeback run. #4 Raining Sugar is another player in a fun spot, but she's definitely going to get bet and doesn't always finish her races with a lot of enthusiasm.

        Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

        Louisiana Downs - Race #1
#2 POPPY T (9-2) Could prove best in a weak field with move forward off his latest start.
#6 MYMANROWEN (5-2) Sandwiched at start, rushed up to lead until late as 1-to-5 favorite.
#9 COACH SAM P (8-1) No factor but competitive speed figures in three starts out of town.
Race Summary Who will handle the turf? That’s the question facing nine maiden claimers in the 5F opener. POPPY T gets the nod off a much-improved comeback try at 6-1/2F last out, when he out-dueled the favorite and held gamely for third in the 4-path. His dam ran twice on the turf, finishing third in an allowance sprint at Louisiana Downs. Bet to win and place and play a 2-6-9 exacta box.
        Louisiana Downs - Race #2
#3 OURQUICKDRAWMCGRAW (3-1) Quicker start the key to upgrading string of in-the-money finishes.
#2 ROCK SOLID WORDS (2-1) Got the jump on 5-1 winner, settled for second on drop to this level.
#1 MUCHO BUENO (6-1) Been taking money but fading readily since debut romp here.
Race Summary OURQUICKDRAWMCGRAW tracked a pair of short-priced favorites after a bumpy start and ran third in his second start this year. He is reunited with Louisiana-bred rivals and can use his speed well with an alert break. Bet to win and place.
        Louisiana Downs - Race #5
#9 BENT HALO (3-1) Bid to stretch lead and held second in grassy debut, takes magnified class drop.
#7 GIRLS GOT GAME (8-1) Took back from post 11, some late interest while 7-wide at Lone Star.
#6 SMART IZZY (6-1) Awakened on surface switch with winning rally last July but has done little since.
Race Summary BENT HALO bid 3-wide and wore down the pace-setting favorite, but she drifted out at the top of the stretch and got caught at 7-1/2F in her first try on turf. She arrived off a main-track win at Oaklawn Park for $20,000 and looks like the one to beat in this spot. Bet to win and place and play a 6-7-9 exacta box.

              #7
Handicapped by The Turf Club Analysts

              PURCHASE

              Mountaineer Park - Race #8 - Post: 9:55pm - Maiden Special - 5.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $16,500 Class Rating: 51

              Rating:

              #8 TAPTAP (ML=6/1)
              #10 HOBNOB'S GIRL (ML=20/1)
              #4 K'S LANEE (ML=6/1)

TAPTAP - When Batista and Pyke partner up on horses the return on investment has been wonderful at +37. HOBNOB'S GIRL - Don't often see a profitable ROI like +21. This jockey/handler duo has done well together over the last twelve months. I like the fact that this first time starter's recent works have been over this track. K'S LANEE - This jockey/handler duo has been producing a very positive ROI, right at +44. I believe this thoroughbred will be right there at the wire. Gets Lasix for the second time, so Cuttino must have confidence in her. Horse got beaten up in her first race. With a lot less trouble, I look for this one in the winner's circle photo.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 FIERY SIDE (ML=3/1), #3 BIT OF BLESSINGS (ML=5/1), #6 XPENSIVE PRINCESS (ML=5/1),

FIERY SIDE - Finished second in her most recent race with a run-of-the-mill speed fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this bunch. BIT OF BLESSINGS - Hard to keep chasing this kind of 'bridesmaid' horse. XPENSIVE PRINCESS - The Equibase speed figs continue to drop, 45/33/23. Not a positive indication.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #8 TAPTAP to win if we can get at least 2/1 odds
              EXACTA WAGERS: 8 with [4,10]

              TRIFECTA WAGERS:

                RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                # 1 JOE'S HAD ENOUGH 5/2
                # 5 PARADE FIELD 7/2
                # 3 REINER 4/1
JOE'S HAD ENOUGH looks to be a quite good contender. The speed figure of 69 from his latest affair looks strong in here. Must be given a chance given the class of races run lately. Is worth looking at and may be a bet - strong speed figs (79 average) at today's distance and surface as of late. PARADE FIELD - Looks very strong for the conditions of this race today, showing solid figures in dirt route races recently. Wagerers get an edge when playing this conditioner in a dirt route race. REINER - Is a solid contender based on numbers put up recently under today's conditions. Bettors ought to take a good look at this one as this gelding has one of the best win percentages at this distance in this group.

                  Rating:

                  #2 CERTAIN (ML=3/1)

CERTAIN - A racer coming back this soon after a strong effort is a good sign.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #4 OUTHUSTLE (ML=5/2), #1 YOUMUSTBEA WEASLEY (ML=7/2), #3 REAPPLY (ML=4/1),

OUTHUSTLE - This gelding showed very little last time out of the box. YOUMUSTBEA WEASLEY - This gelding hasn't had any positive efforts in short distance races in the last sixty days. This pony hasn't been near the winner at the finish line recently. Tough to put your cash on the win end of any racer that finishes second and third as often as this entrant does. REAPPLY - 4/1 is just too low of a price to take on this entrant.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 CERTAIN to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds

THREE YEAR OLDS, 120 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS. NON-WINNERS OF A RACE AT A MILE OR OVER SINCE MARCH 3, 2024 ALLOWED 2 LBS.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 2 GREY STORM 5/2
                    # 3 RONIC 2/1
                    # 1 COMMANDER REX 5/1
GREY STORM is the strongest bet in this race. I like the jock on this horse - respectable chance to win the affair. Had one of the strongest Equibase speed figs of this group of animals in his last contest. Have to look at solely on class, with some of the top class figs of this group. RONIC - Should be given a chance here on the basis of the figs in the speed section alone. Birzer ought to be able to get this gelding to break out early in here. COMMANDER REX - Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Flores have shown strong results recently. Has been close at the finish line most every time recently.
