Meet the Contenders: $500,000 Acorn Stakes at Saratoga | Friday

    June 4, 2024 | By Jeremy Plonk
The 3-year-old fillies have held the Friday spotlight at Churchill Downs for the Kentucky Oaks and Pimlico for the Black-Eyed Susan in recent weeks. The Triple Crown concludes at Saratoga for the Belmont Stakes, but not before the sophomore gals shine in Friday’s Acorn.

Let’s meet the contenders for the Grade 1 Acorn (Race 12), which extends its distance to 1-1/8 miles for the first time:

#1-BECKY’S JOKER: Least-experienced member of the field makes just her third start and first since Saratoga’s 2023 summer meeting. Practical Joke filly won her debut, but finished far back in the Adirondack Stakes. Trainer Gary Contessa also has her cross-entered Thursday at Saratoga in the Jersey Girl Stakes.

#2-POWER SQUEEZE: Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks winner suffered a wide trip from post 11 in the Kentucky Oaks when finishing sixth of 14. Louisville loss snapped a 3-race winning streak, which also included Tampa Bay Downs’ Suncoast Stakes. She’s a daughter of Belmont Stakes winner Union Rags.

#3-LESLIE’S ROSE: Keeneland’s Grade 1 Ashland upsetter was unable to overcome a wide trip in the Kentucky Oaks from post 13 of 14. Tired badly in the Oaks when beating only 1 runner in her only attempt over a wet track. Jockey Irad Ortiz Jr. has been aboard this Todd Pletcher-trained Into Mischief filly in all 5 starts, winning 3. This jockey-trainer combo matches forces Saturday in the Belmont with Mindframe. Pletcher is a 3-time Acorn winner.

#4-JUST F Y I: Last year’s 2-Year-Old Filly Champion won her first 3 starts, including the Breeders’ Cup Juvenile Fillies, but has been second in both attempts so far this season. Chased home Acorn rivals Leslie’s Rose in the Ashland and Thorpedo Anna in the Kentucky Oaks. Daughter of Triple Crown winner Justify could give the sire a massive 6-day run after his City of Troy won the Epsom Derby last Saturday. Junior Alvarado rides for Bill Mott, the team for Resilience in Saturday’s Belmont Stakes.

#5-MY MANE SQUEEZE: Grade 2 Eight Belles winner at Churchill Downs will stretch out from 7 furlongs to 9 on Friday. New York-bred has won 4 of her last 5 and notably registered her second-start maiden victory over the Saratoga track last summer. Her only 2-turn race so far for trainer Mike Maker was an eighth-place run in Oaklawn’s Fantasy after she melted down pre-race. Jockey Luis Saez will partner with Dornoch in Saturday’s Belmont; Maker saddles The Wine Steward in that one.

#6-WHERE’S MY RING: Southern California-based filly has been on the road since the start of April, winning Aqueduct’s Grade 3 Gazelle prior to a 10th-place disappointment in the Kentucky Oaks. Brings modest 1-for-9 career ledger to the Acorn. Trainer Val Brinkerhoff turns to jockey Tyler Gaffalione – who rides Protective in Saturday’s Belmont – for the first time. Gaffalione won this race last year aboard Pretty Mischievous.

#7-REGULATORY RISK: Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks third-place finisher was beaten nearly 8 lengths in Louisville and seeks her first career stakes win. She also must make up more than 4 lengths on Where’s My Ring from their Grade 3 Gazelle 1-2 finish. Jose Ortiz rides this daughter of Omaha Beach for Chad Brown, who will saddle Belmont Stakes morning line favorite Sierra Leone in what could be a huge weekend. Brown won the Acorn in 2019 and 2021.

#8-GUN SONG: Pimlico’s Grade 2 Black-Eyed Susan winner was convincing as the favorite in Baltimore and will get her first test against the top fillies in the division on Friday. Gun Runner filly was second to Acorn return rival Leslie’s Rose in January at Gulfstream and fourth behind Power Squeeze in the Grade 2 Gulfstream Park Oaks. Mark Hennig trains and regular rider John Velazquez, who pilots Antiquarian in Saturday’s Belmont, is back aboard. Johnny V’s 5 Acorn wins are tied with Eddie Arcaro and Mike Smith for most all-time.

#9-THORPEDO ANNA: Grade 1 Kentucky Oaks dominator has won 4 of 5 starts and boasts a field-best $1.4 million earnings ledger. She kicked off a remarkable 24 hours for trainer Kenny McPeek and jockey Brian Hernandez 5 weeks ago when they’d add the Kentucky Derby with Mystik Dan. That one returns Saturday in the Belmont. All 4 of Thorpedo Anna’s wins have come by margins of 4 lengths or more. Four Acorn winners since 2017 have exited the Kentucky Oaks, including 3 who swept both (Pretty Mischievous did so a year ago).

Prime Plays for Saratoga - Friday, June 7, 2024

      June 7, 2024
      Jeff Siegel’s Saratoga “Prime Plays”
      Friday, June 7, 2024

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 1: Post: 12:20 ET Grade: B+
      Prime Play: 4-Illuminare (4-1)
      Backups/Savers: 1-Trulli Warrior; 8-Rolling Along.

Forecast: Illuminare is a first timer from the T. Pletcher stable that has been visually quite pleasing on video as viewed on xbtv.com with a pattern that indicates plenty of fitness and ability, so at 4-1 on the morning line he’s worth strong consideration in the win pool and the various exotics. The son of City of Light may not be blazingly quick – it’s hard to tell because he’s never been asked to display his best stuff – but he moves like a colt with quality for a barn that always has been solid with debut runners. Pletcher’s other intriguing first timer, the Curlin colt Trulli Warrior, has a couple of recent blazingly fast gate drills listed in the paper that really catch the eye, but we have no cameras at the Belmont Park training track, so we’re basically flying blind. Rolling exotic players have to include him somewhere on their ticket. The best of the known element based on speed figures is Rolling Along, who really won’t have to improve much (if at all) following a sharp runner-up debut performance in a productive heat over the all-weather Woodbine surface last month. He’ll get Lasix and blinkers for a stable that has powerful stats with the second time-starter angle.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 3: Post: 1:27 ET Grade: B+
      Prime Play: 6-Yo Daddy (5-1)
      Backups/savers: none.

Forecast :Yo Daddy is protected today in a sign of confidence by new trainer L. Rice (26% with the first-off-the-claim angle) and may prove to be a timely purchase after being haltered for $50,000 from a career top main track win at Keeneland in mid-April. The switch to grass shouldn’t be an issue – he had two good races earlier year on the sod at Fair Grounds - and this long-winded son of Yoshida shows two strong recent drills over the Belmont Park training track to have him primed and ready for another forward move. He’s not the best of movers and is a grinding type without a true turn of foot, but at this nine furlong trip in a race that he fits the conditions to a “T” this developing sophomore should be capable of winning right back while offering excellent value at or near his morning line of 5-1.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 6: Post: 3:11 ET Grade: B+
      Prime Play: 1-Stolen Magic (5-1)
      Backups/savers: 6-Spirit Prince; 9-Army Officer.

Forecast: Stolen Magic showed he could run long on grass in his debut at the Spa during his juvenile season (he missed by neck to next out winner Agate Road) but has been kept around one turn on dirt ever since and finally returns to the lawn today after earning a career top figure when second (six lengths clear of the rest) in a blazingly fast allowance sprint at Aqueduct in late April. The son of Good Magic lands the good rail and hopefully will be allowed to utilize his natural early speed to take control early and never look back. The L. Rice barn has superior stats all over the map and stays with the colt’s regular jockey J. Lezcano, who knows and fits the colt well. The one to fear most – and a “must use” in rolling exotic play – is the comebacker Spirit Prince, a stakes winner on turf last November and making his first start since as a first-time Lasix user for C. Clement, who always is solid with layoff runners. Toss in Army Officer - solid on numbers and picking up Frankie – and you should have the race covered.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 11: Post: 6:05 PT Grade: A-
Prime Play: English Rose (Ire) (3-1)
      Backups/Savers: none.

Forecast: This year’s edition of the New York S.-G1 is completely up to English Rose (Ire), it’s simply hers to win or lose. The lightly raced daughter of Frankel was beaten just for the second time in five career outings in the Jenny Wiley S.-G1 at Keeneland in April, when a mostly self-caused troubled trip left her a length and one-half behind the uncontested front runner Beaute Cachee. The C. Appleby-trained filly was off awkwardly and bumped, apparently got mad, and then was rank while constantly pulling hard until inside the furlong pole before she finally got clear, accelerated, but ran out of room. In race that projects to have modest early fractions, she needs to switch off and settle early, and if she does the Irish-bred four-year-old should have an easy trip while on or near the lead throughout. At or near her morning line of 3-1, she offers a excellent gamble.

        RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: B-
        Main Ticket: 10-Finners Goldnsense; 6-Rhino.
        Backups/savers: 5-Ghostly Act.

Forecast: Finners Goldnsense shows the classic two-sprints-and-a-stretch out pattern along with the blinkers off angle and a switch to top rider J. Hernandez, so we’re expecting considerable improvement from the son of Goldencents in a lackluster affair restricted to California-bred runners. The outside draw is no bargain, but the others are pretty much exposed while this colt is lightly raced with room for a bit of upside that the others don’t have. Rhino is a notorious money burner (he’s been a beaten favorite in four of five career starts) but the Texas Ryano gelding returns to grass and has numbers over this course and distance that puts him right there.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
        RACE 2: Post: 1:33 PT Grade: B
        Main Ticket: 5-Beer Money
        Backups/savers: 2-Eight Clap.

Forecast:Beer Money finished a solid third in a starter optional claiming turf sprint a couple of weeks ago and today returns in a $32,000 claiming dirt dash, a move that almost seems like his connections are trying to cull him from the stable. In the frame in eight of 10 career starts and with two prior main track outings that were quite good, the son of Dads Caps will outrun his four rivals if he has at least one good race left.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
        RACE 3: Post: 2:07 PT Grade: C+
Main Ticket: Teen Drama; 2-A Real Jewel; 4-Aventapp
        Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: This bunch finished in a heap the last time they saw each other, and the group meets again in a turf sprint that is carded at three sixteenths of a mile farther. Any one of the three listed above can win, so triple the race in your rolling exotics and hope to get the best price home, Teen Drama, first off the claim for R. Ellis (strong stats with a limited sample size for this angle), should benefit from the longer journey after finishing third, beaten a half-length, last time out. Closers generally do well over the local lawn at this extended sprint distance, but while ‘Drama can kick it in late she also has enough tactical speed to always be within striking range and then have her chance close home. A Real Jewel, nosed out when waiver protected in the same race ‘Drama exits, was making her first start on turf at age six and ran quite well to narrowly miss. Not much more will be needed today, assuming she doesn’t bounce following what had to be a taxing effort in her first outing in a year. Aventapp is a four time winner over this turf course but was a bit lucky to secure racing room in deep stretch before getting her nose down right on the money in that common race May 18 with the other main players in today’s affair. She should give a similar performance today, so we have to include her on the main ticket.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
        RACE 4: Post: 2:39 PT Grade: B+
        Main Ticket: The GM
        Backups/Savers: 1-J Dutton.

Forecast: It’s never easy to win first time out around two turns on dirt but the debuting The GM has done some excellent work for trainer M. Puype and looks plenty fit and ready for a major effort in this California-bred main track miler. The pedigree suggests he’ll handle the distance just fine, and his drills – strong and steady in nature – indicate sufficient ability to handle this moderate assignment. Let’s make him win and rolling exotic play while also including the two other major players in the field on a backup ticket.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
        RACE 5: Post: 3:10 PT Grade: B-
Main Ticket: 7-Marinas Tina (Ire); 4-Weemissgrammy
        Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Marinas Tina (Ire) drops to the $32,000 claiming ranks after hitting the board without winning in three recent starter allowance grass milers that produced solid speed figures, so we wouldn’t be surprised if she regains her winning form while possibly changing barns via a claim, She’s been a beaten choice in her last two outings but either one of those two races, if repeated today, should be good enough. Wemissgrammy was used on the pace before fading late in the same race our top pick exits. Perhaps patient tactics will produce better results.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
        RACE 6: Post: 3:42 PT Grade: B
Main Ticket:8-Top Gun Tommy; 4-Idaho Once
        Backups/savers: 1-Left Hand Man.

Forecast: Top Gun Tommy just dismantled a $25,000 claiming field for his fourth victory from his last six starts but was voided claim, so there’s a question of condition. However, he returns in his first start since late April while being boosted to the $50,000 level, so his connections must feel he’s okay, and based on speed figures is fast enough to win at this level. From his cozy outside draw at this extended sprint distance, the son of Mineshaft is guaranteed a soft, stalking or pace pressing trip and have every chance from there. Bay Area based Idaho Once earned a career top speed figure when a close second at this level on turf last month. He was an easy winner in his only prior start over conventional dirt and projects as the controlling speed in a field that lacks early zip. Two nice breezes since raced should have ready for a major effort.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
        RACE 7: Post: 4:14 PT Grade: B+
        Main Ticket: 6-Zoffarelli
        Backups/savers: 3-Daniel’s Magic; 4-Lovesick Blues.

Forecast: Zoffarelli (Ire) got away with a very soft opening quarter when winning a downhill dash at this level in mid-April and returns at the same optional $80,000 claiming category while switching to the flat course and shortening up a half furlong. It looks like once again this race has no real early zip, so the same result might be expected. The Irish-bred gelding earned a career top figure in victory and given the pace flow, offers a reasonable gamble to do it again.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
        RACE 8: Post: 4:46 PT Grade: X
        Main ticket: 2-Lyell’s Song
        Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Lyell’s Song crossed the wire first in his debut last month but had his number taken down after bumping and impeding the runner-up in the shadow of the sire. It was the correct call since the margin was about three inches. Let’s hope the son of Cairo Prince runs straight and true today and if he does he’ll likely graduate as a short priced as a logical rolling exotic single.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
        RACE 9: Post: 5:14 PT Grade: B
Main ticket: 6-Cali Bay (Ire); 3-The Giants Candy; 4-Giovinazzo
        Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Cali Bay (Ire) is a genuine and consistent middle distance turf claimer with a consistent form (first or second in seven for 16 career starts). A two time winner over the local lawn, the P. D’Amato-trained Irish-bred gelding hit the front but was swallowed up late to be the fourth nose on the wire in a tougher spot down the Hillside Course last time last time out.. He won’t need much more to regain his winning form today. The Giants Candy blew out a much softer restricted $25,000 claiming field in a fast dash over the flat course in mid-April in what was by far a career top performance. If he can make the running without pressure, the R. McAnally-trained homebred will take the field a very long way. Giovinazzo, first off the claim for $40,000 by J. Sadler, projects to employ stalking tactics and though slightly shy of where he needs to be on speed figures can be dangerous if he can produce just a small forward move.

Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

          June 7, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Hoosier Park has a 14-race card to begin the weekend. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and the sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

          Race 11 (9:45 PM EST)

2-Art Scaping (5-1)-Shipped in from MVR and was off 6 weeks between starts. Raced from the back in a tune-up mile but did come home in 54.1. Could get a suck around trip and has the gate speed to be forwardly placed. Has the speed to win, but needs Kyle Wilfong to work a good trip and roll down the long stretch.
4-Round Here Buzz (3-)-Won for the 4th time in 6 starts this year after taking only 4 pictures in 39 races in 2023. Comes off setting a new lifetime mark of 150.1. Has the gate speed to get a close-up seat and could double up at a fair price.
5-Bundoran N (5/2)-Comes off a strong win and now bumps up a couple of levels. Has cashed checks against this kind and could land in the pocket off the gate behind #4.

          Race 12 (10:06 PM EST)

4-Spring Inhis Step A (5/2)-Went gate to wire versus Open 3 company and now steps up a notch. Best to not sell short, has 7 wins in 14 races at HoP and cashed the top check against straight Open competition at the end of March.
6-Sure Thing Herman (10-1)-This will be the 2nd start on Lasix and had a wide trip in last but did finish with a strong back-half. Drops, and will use on the assumption Wilfong will have the pedal down. Could be a rewarding play if gets off the gate in good shape.
8-Rollinlikethunder (3-1)-Beaten 6/5 chalk faces a bit easier tonight and has the gate speed to land a seat near the front of stack. The Tyler George pupil can go sub-1.50 and Trace Tetrick should have in striking range at the top of the stretch.

          Race 13 (10:27 PM EST)

1-Major Attribute (20-1)-This price shot has finally arrived at a level where a picture could happen. Needs to race at the top of the stack and shouldn't have an issue getting a cozy trip with this post draw. Has one big move and can surprise if in striking range to use it down the lane.
8-Captain Sleaze (6-1)-Went off at 6/5, left sharply for the top and got there into a .26 opening quarter. Did fade down the lane but was off for 20 days between starts and that style wasn't typical. Can use its gate speed to get a good seat but will look for Mike Oosting to come off cover this time and finish best of all.

          Race 14 (10:48 PM EST)

4-Six Again (3-1)-Burned some gas leaving hard into a 26.1 opening panel and a 54.4. half, then called it a night. Beaten odds-on chalk could make amends, comes back in sequence, and should get a less stressful trip.
7-Away We Go A (2-1)-Form has been dull but drops into a soft spot. Not loving the short price but should be a main player. Will probably be bet as this is a George-Tetrick combo and together they are posting 33% winners.

          0.50 Late Pick 4

          2,4,5/4,6,8/1,8/4,7
          Total Bet=$18

            Saratoga All-G1 Pick 3 Friday, June 7

            June 7, 2024 | By Frank Carulli
            SARATOGA ALL-GRADE 1 PICK 3
            Friday, June 7, 2024

The Belmont Stakes will be the icing on the cake for a star-studded weekend of action at Saratoga. But before the third jewel of the Triple Crown heads to the starting gate Saturday, the stage will be set with an all-Grade 1 Pick 3 as part of the 12-race Friday card. Here’s a look at the $1 Pick 3 with a suggested $36 play.

SAR 10th race (5:30 p.m. EST) -- Trainer Chad Brown looks to continue a remarkable 6-for-7 run in the Just A Game Stakes – and he figures to do so with five of the seven entrants. WHITEBEAM gets top billing after she survived a race-long duel in the Grade 3 Beaugay before the deep-closing winner burst on the scene in the closing yards. CHILI FLAG, 8/4-3-1 with Irad Ortiz Jr. aboard, handles firm and soft turf and doesn’t shy from the photo-finish camera as she looks for a graded stakes three-peat, albeit her first in Grade 1 company. GINA ROMANTICA, a Grade 1 grass route winner at ages 2 and 3, deserves a chance to rebound from a sub-par seasonal debut. She posted a 105 Beyer when she won the Grade 1 First Lady, then got beat a length against the boys in the Breeders’ Cup Mile last fall.

SAR 11th race (6:05 p.m. EST) -- How deep is the New York Stakes for older fillies and mares at 1-3/16 miles on the turf? Consider this: Three of the four Grade 1 winners in the field – McKULICK, FEV ROVER and ASPEN GROVE – are 8-1, 15-1 and 20-1, respectively, on the morning line. WAR LIKE GODDESS, the beaten favorite in this race last year, won three graded stakes on the Saratoga lawn and posted three triple-digit Beyer speed figures on soft footing in her last seven starts, a point worth noting with a 55-percent chance of rain in the Friday forecast. AMERICAN SONJA also likes soft footing – and she’s a much better price. She made a good first impression in the U.S. when third in the Saratoga Oaks last August. She bid 3-wide into the far turn to take the lead, but drifted extremely wide at the top of the stretch, exchanged bumps with the runner-up and was no match for the winning favorite. She returns to the states off a Group 3 victory in France off a seven-month layoff. ENGLISH ROSE, in-hand until the top of the stretch in the Grade 1 Jenny Wiley at Keeneland, couldn’t reach the 25-1 pace controller, but she finished gamely in her U.S. debut and is a must use in the always dangerous Charles Appleby barn. The well-traveled STAR FORTRESS makes the ticket at 20-1 odds. She tracked a snails-like pace in the Grade 3 Sheepshead Bay and closed with a flourish to just miss pulling off the upset.

SAR 12th race (6:40 p.m. EST) -- The top two finishers in the Kentucky Oaks reunite in the Grade 1 Acorn at the same distance. THORPEDO ANNA went to the head of the head of the 3-year-old fillies class with a convincing wire-to-wire victory in the slop, earning her second consecutive 90-plus Beyer speed figure. JUST F Y I broke from post 12 in the 14-horse Oaks, took aim at THORPEDO ANNA but finished 4-3/4 lengths behind. She worked a pair of bullets since then at Saratoga, where she won the first start of her career during an unbeaten freshman season. MY MANE SQUEEZE was outrun behind the top pair, but she was reportedly was on edge in the paddock and fractious in the gate, prompting trainer Mike Maker to tell Daily Racing Form “she deserves a chance” at a rematch, a point perhaps validated with a follow-up win in the Grade 2 Eight Belles.

              Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

              Churchill Downs - Race #4
#10 Bowtie or Notie Get a look at her on the tote and track ahead of this, but I wouldn't be shocked to see her run a little bit at first asking. Good draw to pick her spot.
#4 Slang Wouldn't be shocked to see her stick around better with the debut run under her belt, and she did most of the dirty work that day before giving way. Price might be a bit better, too.
#6 Murphy Girl That was a pretty solid debut run in what feels like a decent race, and she's tough in here with any presumed upside second time out.
Race Summary Bowtie or Notie is meeting a field with some decent running lines already, but that may help keep the price playable as she races first out for a capable team.
              Churchill Downs - Race #8
#9 Debt Paid He never got involved going short with stakes company here last month, but his two-turn score a couple starts back in New Orleans looks interesting enough against this group, and the underneath horses that day have been back to land shares against similar on this circuit.
#10 Moonlight He's a player after turning in a respectable first turf try last out, but I'd want a fair price in a race that feels fairly competitive on paper.
#7 Brilliant Berti He looks like one of the ones after posting a sharp score Derby week over the local course, and he should find himself another good spying spot. Lots to like.
Race Summary Lots of horses you can build a case for in here -- I'm also intrigued by #5 Kid Cairo, #2 Swiss Slang, and #1 Pure Poetry -- but I'm going to be trying to get them in with Debt Paid, who should be a decent number even while dropping from stakes company.
              Churchill Downs - Race #9
#7 Strasse He has been a decent fit for similar prices in Arkansas, and I wonder if this one-turn mile might be just what he needs right now. He might be quick enough to be on the splits early, and maybe he'll have a bit more left in the tank with one less turn to navigate.
#1 Availability He will probably show some pace from the fence while racing for the new team, and I think there's a good chance one of these potential forward players will land the finale.
#5 Phenomenal Dream I would probably want him covered on the deeper plays as he's in some of the best form of his winless career, and he at least figures to still be plugging along when many of these have called it quits for the day.
Race Summary Strasse might offer a decent price today, and I'm hoping he gets a good attacking trip while outside of some of the other pace. #10 Hallelujah Harris on stretch plays?

                Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

                Saratoga - Race #1
#1 TRULLI WARRIOR (7-2) Pletcher firster turned heads with bullet work a week ago, draws rail.
#3 PENTATHLON (12-1) Marked improvement in second start at one mile, gets Lasix for 3yo debut.
#5 COMMANDER OF TRUTH (9-2) Bumped rivals at start, ran third, earned top speed fig in this field.
Race Summary TRULLI WARRIOR worked in :46.50 last Friday at Belmont, faster than 151 others at 4F and a full second or more quicker than all but 3 others. His dam just missed at first asking and romped in Maiden Special Weight Company at Keeneland in his second start at this distance. Bet to win and place and play 1-3 and 1-5 exactas.
                Saratoga - Race #2
#1 ARTHUR’S RIDE (3-1) Can control the pace from the inside, distance the question.
#5 LEADING CONTENDER (5-2) Plays to steady, long-distance beat, but beaten fave in 4 of last 6 starts.
#9 TAPIT SHOES (8-1) Re-awakened with win off layoff for high-percentage turf-to-dirt barn.
Race Summary ARTHUR’S RIDE romped on the front-end in an entry-level allowance two starts back, then chased a torrid pace and back-pedaled in a one-mile follow-up. He lands in ideal spot to maximize his speed from the rail if he gets the added distance. Bet to win and place.
                Saratoga - Race #5
#6 BRING ME A CHECK (15-1) Has ingredients for a possible upset despite dull recent form.
#10 MISCHIEVOUS ANGEL (4-1) Closed with a flourish in pair of 6F wins on turf, draws outside.
#3 CLEAR THE AIR (7-2) Validated 24-1 upset at 5-1/2F by dueling through turn and holding second.
Race Summary BRING ME A CHECK returns to Saratoga for his third start as a 7-year-old, trying to recapture his turf sprint form here from last year. He rallied for third in a pair of optional claiming races at today’s distance, the latter in a triple’ key’ race that produced multiple Grade 2 winner Arzak, multiple stakes winner Coppola and next-out stakes victory Thin White Duke. Encouraged by the 35-second bullet work last Sunday and the 15-1 morning line. Bet to win and place.

Race 4 - Maiden Special Weight - 5.0f on the Dirt. Purse: $5300 Class Rating: 45

FOR MAIDENS, THREE YEARS OLD AND OLDER. THREE YEAR OLDS, 124 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS.

                      # 3 COLTON'S TIGER 3/1
                      # 6 TIZ CURLY JOE 5/1
                      # 4 LUCCA'S LEGACY 3/1
I think COLTON'S TIGER is a very strong choice. McDevitt has him trained soundly to break quickly out of the gate. With a very good 51 speed rating last time out, will surely be a factor in this race. Should expect a much better attempt with the drop. TIZ CURLY JOE - Has been travelling in the most competitive company of the field recently. LUCCA'S LEGACY - With Ellis on top him, this gelding will almost certainly be able to break out quickly for this race. He has a good opportunity for this event as handler, Harshman, has sharp win rate with horses going this distance.

                        Lone Star Park - Race #5 - Post: 8:23pm - SO - 8.0 furlongs on the Turf. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 92

                        Rating:

                        #6 MISSION BELLE (ML=5/1)
                        #1 ALLIACEOUS (ML=15/1)

MISSION BELLE - This thoroughbred is for real on the turf. TrackMaster turf fig in last race at Lone Star Park was tops in this group. Dropping 5 lbs from last race. Could be a deciding factor today. Finished out of the money last out at Lone Star Park, but was within five lengths of the winner. Opening at 5/1 makes me think she's got a chance. ALLIACEOUS - This animal could be tough this race, especially since Bridgmohan rode in the last race and now should be familiar with this one. Horse has improved at least two speed rating points in last 2 races. I look for that to continue in today's race.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #8 STOIC LUNA (ML=2/1), #4 HALAGA (ML=3/1), #5 PAINTBRUSH (ML=5/1),

STOIC LUNA - This morning-line choice ran on April 28th and hasn't had a blow out after that. HALAGA - A stretch-runner like this one needs a speed battle to set things up and she isn't likely to get one in this one. PAINTBRUSH - Finished second in her most recent race with a common speed fig. When I look at today's Equibase class figure, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this bunch.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #6 MISSION BELLE to win if you can get at least 9/5 odds
                        EXACTA WAGERS: Box [1,6]

                          # 6 LA RESISTENCIA 5/1
                          # 5 IRISH THUNDER 20/1
My choice here is COSI MOMOSI. Overall the speed figs of this racer look competitive in this contest. This mare has posted some nice finish positions in her last couple of efforts. With a formidable 59 speed figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this affair. LA RESISTENCIA - With a reliable rider who has won at a strong 28 percent rate over the last 30 days. This has to be one of the top selections. Has performed soundly recently in sprint races, posting a nifty 52 avg Equibase Speed Figure. IRISH THUNDER - Have to love when any equine makes a quick turnaround. Earning some good money in dirt sprint events.

                            Belterra Park - Race #2 - Post: 1:05pm - Maiden Special - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $24,200 Class Rating: 61

                            Rating:

                            #7 I'M HIM (ML=2/1)

I'M HIM - This jockey and trainer have a high winning percentage together. I like to wager on this handicapping angle, a thoroughbred coming back off a sharp effort within the last month. This gelding notched a nice fig of 61 in his last affair. That speed rating should be good enough to triumph this time.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 ENTICED BY CHANCE (ML=7/2), #4 PAYMASTER GENERAL (ML=4/1), #3 MR. HIGH POCKETS (ML=5/1),

ENTICED BY CHANCE - Pedestrian speed figure last time around the track at Belterra Park at 6 1/2 furlongs. Don't believe this pony will improve too much in today's event. PAYMASTER GENERAL - This gelding hasn't been showing me anything in the last two efforts. MR. HIGH POCKETS - Just don't think he is priced right at the expected odds.

GUEST COMMENTARY: The Brain - I'M HIM - A pace inquiry shows this horse should have the early speed to wire this field.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Put your money on #7 I'M HIM on the nose if you can get odds of 1/1 or more
