Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Pick 4 Analysis

    June 14, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Hoosier Park has a 14-race card to begin the weekend and Indiana Sires Stakes action are the headliners. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11, and it will be my focus.

Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11 (9:45 PM EST)

1-Crusher Q (4-1)-This veteran lands in a good spot to pick up a win. Gets post relief, class relief, and a positive driver change with Brandon Bates taking a seat. Did cash the top check versus similar back in April.
10-Lotsa Knock Us (3-1)-Comes off 3 even efforts and now drops. Marvin Luna should find some gate speed to follow on the inside and could post the 1st win this year.

    Race 12 (10:06 PM EST)

2-Premier Romeo (5/2)-Was off 20-days before the last start and was beaten by #4 who came out of the pocket. Will look for a big effort and could post another win when a larger purse is on the line as was the case on 5/27.
6-Packedwithluck (7/2)-Has raced better and faster since joining the Tyler George barn 2 back. Faces a tougher group but could surprise if steps up off the last sharp win.

    Race 13 (10:27 PM EST)

1-Noblesville (12-1)-Beaten 3/2 chalk looked short and not up to the task last time. John DeLong steers the Burke pupil, and he should work a cozy trip. Going to use prices in this leg and fade the program choice #6 Sabonis who is 1/5.
2-Rolling Image (8-1)-Makes the 2nd start off the bench after putting in a decent tune-up. Usual pilot, Trace Tetrick grabs the lines, and this is another who can add some juice to the Pick 4 payout.
5-So Into You (12-1)-The Erv Miller pupil will be tested tonight but has been improving and could be up to the challenge. Looking for the 3-year-old to be forwardly placed off the gate and for Sabonis to not get as much respect this week.

    Race 14 (10:48 PM EST)

3-Tellmeboutit (3-1)-The conditioner Alvin Miller is listed as driving but expecting a change to a full-time pilot. Drops, could leave, land on the point and be tough to tackle.
5-Away We Go A (7/2)-Steps-up a couple of notches after wiring the field in last. The George-Tetrick combo could be good for another picture and hopefully the 6-year-old will offer a solid price.
8-Rockin Marty A (9/2)-Bumps up after taking charge early on and then didn't look back. The post makes the price and does best when racing near the lead. Ricky Macomber knows well and could double up if this pilot provides a sharp steer.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

    1,10/2,6/1,2,5/3,5,8

Jeff Siegel's What You Need to Know - Santa Anita - 6/14/24

      June 14, 2024
Jeff Siegel’s Santa Anita “What You Need to Know
      Friday, June 14, 2024

Specifically designed for the rolling exotic player, Jeff Siegel’s “What You Need to Know” isolates those horses that should be included in daily doubles, pick-3s, pick-4s, pick-5s, and the pick-6.

The selections are posted at 6:00 a.m. and updated later in the morning to reflect late scratches and changes (approximately 10:30 a.m.). For additional commentary, follow us on twitter @jsiegelracing.

Grade Descriptions: Grade A=Highest degree of confidence; Grade B=Solid Play. Grade C=Least preferred or pass; Grade X=probable winner but likely at odds too short to play.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 1: Post: 1:00 PT Grade: C+
Main Ticket: 6-Safa; 2-Vronsky Feint; 1-Grazen in the Sun.
      Backups/savers: 5-Raising Silver.

Forecast: Safa was a respectable runner-up in the Melair Stakes and today returns to the first allowance ranks facing a field that should be within her range. Though winless on turf, she’s hit the board in all four starts on grass and at this extended sprint distance the G. Stute-trained mare projects to settle in the second flight outside and then have her chance to seal the from the quarter pole home. She’s a bit of a one-paced grinder, which explains her overall record of one win and seven seconds, but the route-to-sprint angle ensures she’s dead fit. Vronsky Feint and Grazen in the Sun meet again after finishing one-two over this course and distance last month in a race that earned a solid speed figure. They are both entered for the $20,000 tag, which allows them to be in the race and compete for the lucrative $52,000 purse.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 2: Post: 1:33 PT Grade: B+
      Main Ticket: 4-Desert Rhapsody
      Backups/savers: 5-Hymnal.

Forecast: Desert Rhapsody stretches out for the first time in this five runner main track maiden affair for fillies and mares and based if nothing than her pedigree the daughter of Cairo Prince should improve significantly over a distance of ground. Her sprint speed figures show a gradually improving pattern, and in a race without a whole lot of early speed signed on the D. O’Neill-trained filly seems likely to inherit the role as the controlling speed.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 3: Post: 2:07 PT Grade: C+
Main Ticket: Pinehurst; 2-Magic Account; 1-Eastbound.
      Backups/savers: 8-Sanger.

Forecast: Pinehurst didn’t get the best of runs in his first start facing winners following a reasonably decent bottom-rung maiden claiming score, so we’ll give him another chance in this modest restricted (nw-2) $25,000 claiming grass dash. Only slight improvement will be required. Magic Account pulverized maiden claimers on the main track last month with a career top speed figure and if he can transfer that form to turf he’ll be a major player and maybe the one to beat. Eastbound has a race two runs back at this level that puts him in the hunt and if the pace types do each other in he’ll be the one to fear most in the closing stages.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 4: Post: 2:39 PT Grade: B+
      Main Ticket: Jackstown
      Backups/Savers: none.

Forecast: Jackstown broke his maiden at first asking at Del Mar two years ago like a very nice prospect but then disappeared. He returns for B. Baffert in a five runner allowance race with a quick series of morning trials that indicate that despite the long layoff he’s lost none of his speed. If he returns as well as he left the son of Speightstown will be hard to beat, but likely at a very short price.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 5: Post: 3:10 PT Grade: B+
      Main Ticket: Nesso’s Lasthurrah
      Backups/savers: 4-Lemon Sushi.

Forecast: Nesso’s Lasthurrah is a genuine and consistent sprinter with good form on both dirt and turf. This grass dash for starter allowance runners is a step up class for horses eligible to the non-winners of three condition, but based on speed figures he is within his capabilities and that’s not factoring in another likely forward move. The J. Mullins barn has been red hot in recent weeks, especially with E. Maldonado in the saddle, so let’s make this sophomore son of Sharp Azteca a win gamble and main push in the various rolling exotics.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 6: Post: 3:42 PT Grade: X
      Main Ticket: Midland Money
      Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Midland Money has trained like a rocket ship, initially at the OBS March Sale, where he drilled a furlong in :09 4/5 (and then brought $650,000 through the ring), and then after joining the B. Baffert barn, where he has consistently impressed with a series of sharp workouts. He’ll be a very short price and logical rolling exotic single.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 7: Post: 4:14 PT Grade: B+
      Main Ticket: Moment’s Pleasure
      Backups/savers: Illhaveanotherkiss

Forecast: Moment’s Pleasure earned by far a career top number when a strong second in the Fran’s Valentine Stakes over this course and distance last month in just her fifth career start, and if she doesn’t go backwards today the daughter of Clubhouse Ride should be able to handle this first level allowance state-bred affair. She has a good stalking style, switches to top rider J. Hernandez, and seems pretty solid overall.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 8: Post: 4:46 PT Grade: B-
      Main ticket: 7-Flatterwithjewels
      Backups/savers: 4-Sweet Hello.

Forecast: Flatterwithjewels has hit the board in each of her last eight starts and her consistency should be rewarded in this lackluster $12,500 claiming miler for fillies and mares. She’ll likely fold over into an ideal second flight, stalking trip and then have dead aim on the faint-hearted front-running types from the top of the lane to the wire. She’s listed at 9/5 on the morning lune but we suspect she’ll go lower.

      __________________________________________________ ____________________________
      RACE 9: Post: 5:14 PT Grade: B
      Main ticket: 5-Runninwiththeboz 2-Vitalera (Chi)
      Backups/savers: none.

Forecast: Runninwiththeboyz returns following a seven month vacation with workouts that suggest she is fit and ready and perhaps better than ever in this second level allowance Hillside affair for fillies and mares. When last seen last fall the daughter of Liam’s Map had lost her edge but the layoff appears to have perked her up and there is no ignoring her form over the local lawn (four wins in five starts) that make her the obvious top pick, one to beat, and a good gamble at her 2-1 morning line, if you can get it. Vitalera earned a career top number when winning at 29-1 over this tricky course and distance last month and may be capable of moving up a notch on the class ladder and being competitive with her effective pace stalking/pressing style. Toss her in somewhere, just in case.

Laurel Park, Pick 4 Friday, June 14

        June 14, 2024 | By Frank Carulli
        LAUREL PARK PICK 4
        Friday, June 14, 2024

Two favorites and two $20-plus horses produced a $429 payout in the late 50-cent Pick 4 at Laurel Park last Friday. A pair of crowded turf races could hold the key to unlocking this week’s sequence. Here’s a closer look:
LRL 6th race 3:00 p.m. EST) -- HOT LOOKIN ROYAL rallied into a slow pace at 6F and finished second off a seven-month layoff. She steps up in class, but she’s 3-for-7 at Laurel Park and should sit a good trip at one mile. SWEET HEIDELBERG rushed up after she broke last, dueled inside of the 1-to-2 winner and battled gamely to the wire to earn her top speed figure with a runner-up finish. BAD TEMPER was in range of the dueling leaders but flattened out in a two-turn route, setting her up well for this one-turn mile.
LRL 7th race (3:31 p.m. EST) -- ALLA BREVE, far back and behind a wall of horses coming into the stretch, flew home in the 6-path to miss catching the favorite by a length when last seen at Gulfstream Park in January. She made a similar-type move in a debut victory at today’s distance with Karamanos aboard. She is today’s solo play in the Pick 4.
LRL 8th race (4:02 p.m. EST) -- MAGIC MICHAEL, first or second in 23 of 40 starts and a $600k earner, won at five distances from a mile and beyond with 90-plus Beyers in his career. BOSS LOGIC, who used his speed to win four in a row to cap a $144k season last year at age 7, can get the jump on his main rivals again in his second start this year and first off a $55,000 claim by a red-hot barn. SHAFT’S BULLET, slow early in the first sprint of his career, rallied through the turn and ran second to a winner who posted a 100 Beyer at 6F. He loves Laurel Park, won a one-mile stakes here and can turn the tables on several rivals he lost to as the odds-on choice two starts back at 1-1/8 miles.
LRL 9th race (4:33 p.m. EST) -- Taking nothing to chance in the finale, as the 11 entrants are a combined 5-for-67 on the grass, so hit the ‘ALL’ button in hopes that the ticket is still alive.

        Suggested 50-Cent Ticket
        LRL 6th Race: 1, 4, 5
        LRL 7th Race: 8
        LRL 8th Race: 3, 7, 8
        LRL 9th Race: ALL
        Cost for 50-cent ticket: $49.50

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Churchill Downs - Race #5
#1 Relampago Verde Thinking this longer trip on the turf might work in his favor. The two-back graduation run on the turf at Keeneland was solid, and he might be dangerous with that kind of stretchout speed.
#10 Sgt. Pepper Price probably won't be much, but I think he's supposed to be tough, even after an even sort of effort at Keeneland last out. He might like it better here, and the winner of the last just ran second last weekend in the Grade II Belmont Gold Cup, so that's a quality company line.
#6 Viva La Red There are some tough customers in her running lines, too, and she'll try the boys for this marathon trip that produced a good try in April at Keeneland. Wouldn't be a total shock, but not sure she's going to offer the right kind of price.
Race Summary Relampago Verde might still have some upside on the grass with just the one career start over the surface to his name, and I'll try to get him in the frame with the logical likely chalk, Sgt. Pepper.
          Churchill Downs - Race #8
#3 Ambivalent Honest finisher has met a couple decent players in recent starts, and he might be just playable enough on the board while trying to turn the tables on the next guy.
#7 Just Might His overall form is still really sharp, but he has been finding the final post just a touch too far in those recent races. Wouldn't surprise, but I might look for someone at a bit better price who figures to be finishing a bit.
#1 Confidence Game Not much to write home about in the recent form, but he has also done a lot of that racing in stakes company going long on the dirt. No clue how he might handle this short trip, but this barn is never afraid to give them a shot at something totally new.
Race Summary Ambivalent has some appeal while showing up late, but he's going to have to run down sharp speedster Just Might, who keeps turning in solid efforts. Confidence Game is the wild card, but I'd want him on the tickets.
          Churchill Downs - Race #9
#10 Just Like You She might be a little cheap, but this isn't the toughest spot even for the $20,000 level. Her overall form has been OK, and she should appreciate the drop out of allowance company. Small swing.
#6 Crystal Symphony Tactical pace fits well on the drop to $20,000, but I wouldn't be thrilled to take too short a price with a couple of one-paced recent running lines on the page.
#2 Mo Sense She's an honest enough finisher who fits well on the slight drop, and I like her trying this one-turn trip while in for a tag for the first time.
Race Summary Just Like You should be a nice number on the board while trying the local claiming company for the first time, and she might get a decent enough tracking trip while adding some ground today.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Laurel Park - Race #1
#11 SWITZER (7-2) Closed with a 6-wide flourish for second, added ground a difference maker.
#8 SUGA STEVE (8-1) Sped to top figure to begin 3yo season, steps up for 21-percent ‘repeat’ barn.
#5 TALL ORDER (2-1) Can be excused for latest, earned checks in 3 of 4 allowance sprints prior.
Race Summary SWITZER won for twice this much at 5-1/2F on the Laurel Park lawn last fall. He raced far back at Pimlico turning for home last out, swung to the middle of the course and closed with a rush to finish second at 5F. He draws wide but can overcome it with an extra half-furlong to travel. Bet to win and place and play a 5-8-11 exacta box.
            Laurel Park - Race #2
#4 ASCRIBE (5-2) Made headway while 4-wide on turn, drops below claim level in second try for Ness.
#2 I’LLTAKETHEBLAME (7-5 Blocked through turn, race produced $25k runaway, gets class relief.
#5 CORONATION TIME (7-2) Rallied for minor awards at three distances in his last four starts.
Race Summary ASCRIBE, in tight at the start, trailed midway on the backstretch, gained ground through the final turn but flattened out while widest in the stretch. He must stay in closer contact in his first start on conventional dirt but the class drop should help. Bet to win and place.
            Laurel Park - Race #5
#1 UNCLE CURLY (3-1) Memory can serve class dropper well at proven distance and surface.
#2 CAERUS (10-1) Rallied for third in 5F grass sprint won by recent three-peater, can route.
#7 FORTUNE’S FOOL (2-1) Out-kicked stakes winner at one mile the last time he raced on turf.
Race Summary UNCLE CURLY earned more than half of his $254k turf bankroll at this distance with five wins. The 9-year-old hasn’t raced this cheap in four years. He made a belated move two back, then chased the pace and ran evenly for $16k, but both races produced winners with 75 Beyer speed figures. Bet to win and place and play a 1, 2/1, 2, 7/ALL trifecta.

                  Prairie Meadows - Race #3 - Post: 6:54pm - Claiming - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $26,724 Class Rating: 62

                  Rating:

                  #2 ANCHORS AND SPURS (ML=4/1)

ANCHORS AND SPURS - Always beware of the longer priced horse when a trainer has an 'uncoupled' entry in a race. Trainer, Martinez, has been deliberate with this filly off the layoff. Look for a solid effort today.

Vulnerable Contenders: #5 HOP AWAY HOTTIE (ML=2/1), #6 CUPIDS SWEETY (ML=5/2), #4 DREAMIN IT UP (ML=3/1),

HOP AWAY HOTTIE - The rating last out doesn't fit very well in this race when I look at the Equibase class figure of today's affair. Mark this thoroughbred as a likely underpriced contender. CUPIDS SWEETY - This filly finished out of the top three on May 10th and wasn't close to victory in the last race either. Finished fourth in her most recent performance with a substandard speed fig. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this field. DREAMIN IT UP - This youngster isn't going to beat the veterans today, maybe another time. In this circumstance, this runner's inability to close any ground in the last race is a matter of concern.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #2 ANCHORS AND SPURS to win if we can get at least 1/1 odds

                    Race 1 - Claiming - 5.5f on the Dirt. Purse: $13000 Class Rating: 86

FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON THREE RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 122 LBS.; OLDER, 125 LBS. CLAIMING PRICE $10,000, IF FOR $9,000, ALLOWED 2 LBS.

                    RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                    # 2 ARTEMUS GORDON 4/1
                    # 4 MY BUCKET LIST 9/5
                    # 1 ALPHABETICAL ORDER 2/1
I think ARTEMUS GORDON is a formidable choice. Should be given a chance here on the basis of the numbers in the speed realm alone. He has a good opportunity in this contest as handler, McCanna, has sharp win clip with horses going this distance. Will likely be one of the leaders of the group going into the midpoint of the race. MY BUCKET LIST - Sound average speed figures in dirt sprint races make this pony a solid contender. Had one of the strongest speed figures of this group of animals in his last contest. ALPHABETICAL ORDER - Win percentage one of the most competitive in this group. Could best this field based on the Equibase Speed Figure - 88 - of his last affair.

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 1 PASS IT AROUND 5/2
                      # 7 SPORTS IDOL 12/1
                      # 2 GOLD EXPRESS 7/2
PASS IT AROUND figures to be the bet in here. Formidable average speed figs in dirt sprint races make this pony a definite contender. Formidable rider and trainer combo winning 26 percent of their races working together. SPORTS IDOL - This gelding looks good for this race since Barton has a strong win percent with horses going this distance. Overall, this conditioner has been lucrative at this distance/surface. GOLD EXPRESS - Has a solid shot in here if you like back class. Rosendo has one of the best jock ROI's on the grounds, returning to wagerers +73 percent.

                        Laurel - Race #4 - Post: 1:58pm - Claiming - 9.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $26,000 Class Rating: 91

                        Rating:

                        #3 MONEY ROOM (ML=7/2)
                        #6 MINXZLUCKYSTARFYRE (ML=9/5)

MONEY ROOM - Sneaky speed on this one. He'll probably be stalking thoroughbreds on the back side, then demolish them down the stretch. MINXZLUCKYSTARFYRE - Ranked numero uno in earnings per start. Another indication that this animal has the class to win today.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #4 FINGER ROLL (ML=5/2), #5 MARGIE'S FUN SON (ML=3/1), #1 ARMED AND READY (ML=8/1),

FINGER ROLL - Will probably be educated to pay some respect to his elders today. MARGIE'S FUN SON - This equine doesn't have a tenacious demeanor. Always finishes in the place and show spots. ARMED AND READY - The young horse will have a hard time beating older this time. Don't think this pony will make a winning move in today's race. That last speed figure was quite unimpressive when compared with today's class figure.
