Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

    June 20, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
    XXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXXX
Hoosier Park has a 14-race card. The 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 11. The sequence has a $10,000 guaranteed pool, and it will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

    Race 11 (9:45 PM EST)

2-Starlit Kissin JK (9/2)-Seems to do best by getting on the engine off the gate and should get that type of trip again. Fits well with this group and has won 4 of 17 at HoP. Ricky Macomber can work an efficient trip and is a double-up possibility.
7-Fred and Roz (4-1)-Drops to a soft spot after suffering a few breaks including interference breaks. Requalified nicely on 6-5 by wiring the field. Should be in the hunt at the wire with a clean trip.
8-Grigoriev (5/2)-Came the back half in a snappy 56.1 on a sloppy track. Drops after rallying off cover with a 27.3 last panel. Trace Tetrick sticks, needs a sharp steer but it's best to not overlook in this spot.

    Race 12 (10:06 PM EST)

2-Chandler Bing (5/2)-Raced well on the 1/2-mile track at Converse. Paced the back half in 57.4 and should get a cozy trip on the big track.
4-Vel A Tough Cookie (30-1)-This price shot broke at the start in the same race as the one above and still finished 3rd. Trace Tetrick gets the call tonight and looks worthy of a swing at a big mutuel.
5-Kirkland (2-1)-This freshman is 2 for 2 and drew off in the last race with a 57.2 back half. Looks like the one to beat and it will be interesting to see how the 2-year-old looks going down the long stretch.

    Race 13 (10:27 PM EST)

1-Nohelpneeded (8-1)-This will be a test, doesn't have the resume of others but comes off a nice win in the slop. Thinking this freshman won't be over bet and Tetrick can work a ground saving journey. Could trip out, and pop at a price if minds its manners.
7-Flirtnwiththepilot (3-1)-Team Wrenn entry has come off the bench with at best, even efforts in 2 races. That might be partly by design, and the wrapper could come off tonight. Looking for an aggressive try and has won 3 of 9 at Hoosier.

    Race 14 (10:48 PM EST)

1-JBS Cuppa Jo (9/2)-Broke its maiden with a convincing win at 4/5 on a sloppy track. Likes to race on top or close to it and Marvin Luna is in a good spot to work that type of trip. Steps-up and should offer a square price.
4-JD's King James (5-1)-Camera shy 3-year-old won and then jumped up to face better and seems to be improving. With this post draw Jordan Ross could work a ground saving trip and be a threat near the wire.
6-A New Endeavor (8/5)-The Charlie Stewart pupil has won 2 of its 3 starts and appears to be a cut above this crew. Could be a decent trip away from another picture.

    0.50 Late Pick 4

    2,7,8/2,4,5/1,7/1,4,6
    Total Bet=$27

      Setting the Scene

Thursday is Gold Cup Day at Royal Ascot, as all eyes are focused on the day’s 2 1/2-mile feature, which goes as Race 4, at 11:25AM ET. Favoritism is with Aidan O’Brien’s exceptional #3 KYPRIOS (4/5). He won this race in 2022 over the legendary Stradivarius and has won 10-of-14 lifetime. One blemish on his calendar came in the Gr II British Champions Long Distance last October at Ascot at the hands of #6 TRAWLERMAN (10/1), who enters this race a winner of 7-of-16 in his career. Other features on the day are the five furlong Norfolk (Race 1), and the 1 1/2-mile Ribblesdale (Race 3), which pits marquee ownership groups of Godolphin (#2 DIAMOND RAIN), Juddmonte (#1 KALPANA and #10 SIYOLA) and Coolmore (#8 PORT FAIRY and #10 RUBIE SARE RED) against one another.

      American Runners

America’s hopes on Thursday are focused on #14 SATURDAY FLIRT (10/1) in the opener, the Gr II Norfolk, at 9:30AM ET. The Wesley Ward-trained daughter of Mendelssohn kicked to victory in her Keeneland debut on April 26, overcoming a tardy start to win going away. Joel Rosario is in the irons.

I give my vote to BEST PERFORMER here. She looks very good in this spot and I expect will be on the front end or close at the midpoint. With a formidable 91 speed figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this competition. QUALITY STAR - Has quite good Equibase Class Figures relative to this group of horses - worth a look. Is tough not to look at based on Equibase speed figs which have been strong - 90 avg - of late. TIMELESS ROSE - Solid average Equibase speed figs in turf route races make this animal a solid contender. Will probably be one of the front-runners of the group going into the midpoint of the contest.

I've got to go with QUALITY STAR. Had one of the best speed figures of this group in her last affair. With a nice class fig average of 98, has one of the strongest class advantages in this field. With a formidable ROI of +14 this handler has shown strong results with entries running at this distance and surface. BEST PERFORMER - The Equibase speed fig of 91 from her last contest looks respectable in here. Should come out strong - I have liked the way this filly has moved sharply to the front end recently. AUTISM COMMUNITY - She has a very good distance/surface win record - 2 out of 8.

                Gulfstream Park - Race #2 - Post: 1:24pm - Maiden Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $25,000 Class Rating: 53

                Rating:

                #1 FOR THE THRILL (ML=6/1)
                #2 LOLA LOCA (ML=5/1)

FOR THE THRILL - This steed should go right out to the early lead and may never look back. Could gate-to-wire the field. LOLA LOCA - Taking this jockey/trainer combination is a good move. This mare is obviously on the improve with Equibase speed figures of 12, 36, 39 last three out.

                Vulnerable Contenders: #8 AWESOMELY WILD (ML=8/5), #3 SPANISH GIRL (ML=3/1), #5 HOLY KINGDOM (ML=6/1),

AWESOMELY WILD - This chalk horse ran on May 24th and hasn't had a work after that. SPANISH GIRL - 3/1 is just not enough of a value to take on most any thoroughbred that has run poorly in back to back races. This pony ran a most unsatisfactory fig last out. She shouldn't improve and will likely lose in today's race running that number. HOLY KINGDOM - Finished third in her most recent effort with a mediocre speed rating. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to prove victorious after that in this group.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #1 FOR THE THRILL to win if we can get at least 8/5 odds

                  Penn National - Race #2 - Post: 6:14pm - Maiden Special - 8.3 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $31,000 Class Rating: 78

                  Rating:

#3 ZIPPY DO DA DAY (ML=8/1)
                  #2 UPTOWN CHARLY GIRL (ML=8/1)

ZIPPY DO DA DAY - Samaniego has an 'uncoupled' entry here. Best to beware the longer priced half. UPTOWN CHARLY GIRL - I am keen on that last race on May 30th at Penn National where she finished third. After a pair of sprints, she's routing today, which is probably what this filly wants to do.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #1 EXTREMELY GRUNTLED (ML=8/5), #4 AMERICAN SAINT (ML=3/1), #5 MAXIMO MADNESS (ML=7/2),

EXTREMELY GRUNTLED - I don't normally play a morning-line favorite that hasn't been to the track in the last three weeks. MAXIMO MADNESS - This filly registered a speed fig in her last affair which likely isn't good enough in today's race.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Bet on #3 ZIPPY DO DA DAY to win if you can get at least 7/5 odds
