$100 Wagering Strategy on Ohio Derby Day | Saturday, June 22

    June 20, 2024 | By 1/ST BET
Saturday is the biggest day on the racing calendar at Thistledown with the $500,000 Ohio Derby headlining a strong 13-race card. As usual, Xpressbet and 1/ST Bet have a fun and simple promotion to coincide with the big day of racing in the Buckeye State. Simply wager $100 on the Saturday afternoon card at Thistledown and get a $10 Bonus! As always, remember to register for the promo before jumping in.

I was planning on diving into the card at Thistledown already, so it is a no-brainer to do so at Xpressbet or 1/ST Bet where I will gladly take 10% back on my $100 wagered. Here is my plan of attack:

Race 9: The Daniel Stearns Cleveland Gold Cup Stakes kicks off the all-stakes Pick 5. Since I am against the Tim Hamm four-horse coupled entry in the first leg, I will take a shot at both the Pick 5, as well as the Pick 3, where I have a chalky single in Race 11. These wagers would almost certainly be a pass if I was unwilling to take on the Hamm quartet. Hopefully we can separate from the public right off the rip.

    Wagers:

    50-cent Pick 5: 2+4 with 1+5+7 with 1 with 4+5+6 with 5+8 = $18

    $2 Pick 5: 2+4 with 5+7 with 1 with 5 with 8= $8

    $2 Pick 3: 2+4 with 1+5+7 with 1= $12

    $5 Pick 3 2+4 with 7 with 1= $10

    Total= $48

Race 10: I am not overly creative in the Dr. T.F. Classen Memorial Stakes, but I do give #5 Express Fashion a chance to hit the board at the very least. The daughter of Mobil stretches back out to two turns after two sprints for trainer Shane Meyers. The 4YO filly needs to prove she belongs at this class level, but I am hopeful jockey Luis Rivera will angle over to save ground early. If he can avoid a wide voyage into the first turn and on the backstretch, this gal has a big chance to be rolling late. The Robert Gorham three-horse coupled entry is listed at 5-2 on the morning line, and is tough to totally toss, but I do prefer #7 Queenofthebuckeye who projects to get a favorable stalking voyage off a contentious first-half mile. I will use both in exactas with Express Fashion but press up on Queenofthebuckeye.

    Wagers:

    $2 Exacta Wheel 5 with 1+7= $4

    $2 Exacta 5-7= $2

    $5 Exacta Wheel 1+7 with 5 = $10

    $4 Exacta 7-5 = $4

    Total = $20

Race 13: The card concludes with the feature where #8 Catching Freedom gets significant class relief after off-the-pace efforts in the Kentucky Derby (G1) and the Preakness Stakes (G1). The Brad Cox trainee failed to take advantage of a dream run in the Derby, but was up against from off the pace in the Preakness. That should not be the case in this year’s Ohio Derby where the pace should be honest. The Albaugh Family Stables colt is the clear one to beat, but #5 Uncle Heavy does intrigue. The Pennsylvania-bred put forth a strong effort to get the job done by a nose in the Withers (G3) before a pair of off the board finishes in the Wood Memorial (G2) and the Preakness (G1). His lack of early zip always puts him at the mercy of the race shape and his trip, but he was cost all chance after a slow start from the outside in the Wood and was up against from start-to-finish trying to chase down Seize the Grey on the front end in Baltimore. He not only gets some class relief in here but a likely more favorable setup. I expect him to put forth a big effort but not sure it will be good enough to beat the favorite.

    Wagers:

    $22 Exacta 8-5

    $10 Win 5

    Total = $32

    Total Spent= $100

Good luck on Ohio Derby Day!

Al Cimaglia: Hoosier Park Late Pick 4 Analysis

      June 22, 2024 | By Al Cimaglia
Hoosier Park has a 12-race card, and the 0.50 Late Pick 4 starts in Race 9. The sequence will be my focus. Comments and selections below are based on a fast track.

      Race 9 (9:56 PM EST)

5-Adashious Hanover (3-1)-Went to the half in 53.4 and the hot pace took its toll. Trace Tetrick is back and fits with this crew. Does have some gaps between starts but should be a main player if brings a top effort.
7-Elektra A (9/2)-Has enough gate speed to get a good early seat and the pace should be lively. If this mare is in striking range Atlee Bender can use one nice move to roll by down the lane.

      Race 10 (10:18 PM EST)

4-Swingforthefences (4-1)-Comes off a dull try at this class but now comes back in sequence and Tetrick gets the call. Will look for a strong try and the Cullipher barn is posting 23% winners over the last 30 days.
7-Niko Man (7/2)-Niko hasn't had a great year, not as successful as 2024. Will use anticipating the price to be better than the morning line. Has beaten this kind before and does win its share at HoP (16-5-2-0). Looking for a wake-up call at a solid price.

      Race 11 (10:40 PM EST)

2-Utopia Blue Chip (3-1)-Jumps up after drawing off by 4 lengths in 150.3. Went the back half in 55.1 and made every call a winning one. Looked great in the 3rd start since 10-29. Will look for another strong try and could double up with a smooth trip.
3-Maybemabel (12-1)-Mabel has won 9 of 32 at HoP, came a close 3rd last week and stopped the clock in 151.3. Brandon Bates knows this mare and she can fly late in the mile. Looking for a good price and to be in striking range at the top of the lane.

      Race 12 (11:02 PM EST)

1-It's Corona Time (9/2)-Simply put this Burke trainee needs to improve, and that is possible versus this bunch. Tetrick can work a suck-around trip and be in the mix at the wire.
6-Bombay Parkway (6-1)-Hasn't won at HoP in 9 tries. Now, gets class relief and post relief plus Bates sticks. Could surprise at a price if within reach of the leaders at the top of the stretch.

      $1.00 Late Pick 4

      5,7/4,7/2,3/1,6
      Total Bet=$16

        Jeff Siegel’s National Best Plays
        Saturday, June 22, 2024

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
CHURCHILL DOWNS – SECOND RACE – POST: 1:14 ET
        BEST PLAY: 1-NEVEERWALKALONE (BRZ) (10-1)

Forecast: The multiple Group-1 winning South American invader Neverwalkalone (Brz) makes her U.S. debut in this third level allowance event over a mile on grass in what appears to be an ideal spot to verify the strength of her Southern Hemisphere credentials. The Brazilian-bred filly, foaled in August of 2020 and therefore not actually four yet, should have no issue facing older foes under the assumption that her Argentine form can be taken at face value. A versatile and talented granddaughter of Sunday Silence, she has won quality races on both dirt and turf while showcasing a devasting late kick, and as a first time Lasix user from a favorable rail post, the Paulo Lobo-trained import looks good to go in her first outing since last September. A series of sharp workouts (three of her last four drills have been “bullets”) should have her fit and ready, so at or near her morning line of 10-1 she offers extreme value in the win pool and in the various rolling exotics.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________

CHURCHILL DOWNS – EIGHTH RACE – POST 4:23 ET
BEST PLAY: 7-QUEEN OF PARIS (4-1)

        Forecast
: Though she was beaten as the favorite in her recent debut in an elongated sprint last month, the Godolphin homebred Queen of Paris actually was quite impressive in defeat when third, beaten less than two lengths, after some self-caused trouble. The long striding daughter of Tapit was off slowly and lost early position, raced in traffic midway, then angled out for room and closed relentlessly before running out of room and then galloping out with significant power. With that bit of experience behind her and stretching out to a two-turns for a barn that boasts superior stats with this angle, the B. Cox-trained filly is a daughter of the multiple Grade-1 winner Wedding Toast has a very nice future. First things first and that’s earning her diploma, which could easily be accomplished today with improvement that she is expected to produce. We’d love to get the 4-1 that is listed on the morning line.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
THISTLEDOWN – THIRTEENTH RACE – POST: 6:30 ET
        BEST PLAY: 9-BATTEN DOWN (6-1)

Forecast: His connections toyed with the idea of moving Batten Down all the way up to the Belmont Stakes-G1 following a dominating, mile and one quarter maiden win at Churchill Downs in late April but ultimately decided on to take one step at a time, and this year’s edition of the $500,000 Ohio Derby-G3 indeed fits the timeline perfectly. The full brother to Wood Memorial S.-G2 winner and twice Classic-placed Tacitus produced a career top 93 Beyer Speed Figure in his nearly nine length romp, and with another forward move today he should take this class jump in stride. The son of Tapit has shown he can win on the lead or from a pressing position, so depending upon the race flow regular rider J. Alvarado can pick a spot and choose his strategy. What he may lack in experience he certainly should make up for in talent, so at a juicy 8-1 on the morning line the Bill Mott-trained colt presents a superior wagering opportunity.

        __________________________________________________ ____________________________
CANTERBURY PARK – EIGHTH RACE – POST 8:40 CT
        BEST PLAY: 6-BAXLEY (3-1)

Forecast: An impressive series of recent workouts provides strong indication that the quick sprinter Baxley has retained all of his juvenile speed for high percentage connections and therefore is the one to beat in this entry level allowance abbreviated dash. A facile first out maiden winner last summer at Hawthorne by more than five lengths, the son of KIimt then performed better than looked (a troubled fifth) facing a much stronger field in Kentucky in his next outing, so in his first start since October the Larry Rivelli-trained sophomore should simply outclass today’s field. In that Keeneland allowance race, the expensive ($235,000) OBS April sale graduate missed the break, raced in a box just off the very quick pace and then stayed on as best he could behind stakes quality performers Normandy Hero and Valentine Candy in a much better than looked outing. Based on his numbers from last year, he’s simply faster than this group, so if you can get close to his morning line of 3-1, you should probably take it.

          Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

          Thistledown - Race #10
#1X Lemon Mousse Tactical speed woke up with a big run when cutting back to this trip last time out, and she figures in line for another perfect trip while in just behind the quicker players early.
#4 Dolce Marie She can be all or nothing on the lead, but there aren't too many seriously committed frontrunners lined up in here. Wouldn't be completely surprised to see her run this group off their feet. In the mix.
#8 Ima Mom She's an honest enough finisher and would benefit if a few of these were to prompt the splits early, and believers might get a playable price today.
Race Summary Lemon Mousse is part of a tough entry, but I think she might be the right one while spying Dolce Marie in the early going. Ima Mom wouldn't be a shock, but I think she's most useful underneath.
          Thistledown - Race #11
#6 First Song He has historically found stakes groups a little deep, but I liked his last and wonder if he might be the quickest of them early. Better stuff might keep him in the frame at an OK price.
#1X Casual Attire Another formidable entry in this race, and this guy has a stakes win and a couple other solid races on his page. Positional pace should be much better than the comeback run.
#2 Venture On He might be a decent enough price while looking like the type who can get past some of these late. He was in the mix with the top choice a couple starts back and might settle and share.
Race Summary First Song has some solid pace in a race where many of them will either chase or try to settle a bit, and I don't think you have to be super afraid of anyone specific in here.
          Thistledown - Race #13
#9 Batten Down Guessing he's the second choice when it's all sorted out, but I think he's the right one while really coming to hand in recent starts. His pace will have him in a great spot throughout and give him the jump on the likely chalk.
#8 Catching Freedom He's probably supposed to be tough while getting some significant class relief -- it has been a really long time since he saw a field this soft. Still, I'm a little worried that he won't get enough pace today.
#2 Gould's Gold He's still a little light on class, but this is a pretty reasonable spot to go looking for a graded win after just missing on the Preakness undercard. Progressive type wouldn't shock.
Race Summary Batten Down and Catching Freedom are probably the obvious pair, but the price figures to be a bit better on the former as he rises off the graduation win.

            Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

            Laurel Park - Race #1
#1 PURE MAJESTIC (3-1) Takes catching if one of the first-time starters doesn’t get in the way.
#2 SAILTHESEVENSEAS (5-1) Dam of this debut runner was stakes winner of $250k for same barn.
#5 THUNDER IN PARIS (5-2) Caught top one to finish second and continued strong on gallop out.
Race Summary PURE MAJESTIC inched closer to the 2-1 co-favorite at the top of the stretch and battled gamely to the end in her second start. She was collared late by THUNDER IN PARIS for the runner-up spot but could turn the tables as the controlling speed. Bet to win and place and play 1-2 and 1-5 exactas.
            Laurel Park - Race #2
#8 RUMINT (10-1) Useful allowance try in first start on turf, price attached in shorter sprint.
#2 MOMMA’S LINO (2-1) Disputed fast pace a long way in route, won in 6F dirt sprint.
#6 MOMENTOUS MISS (4-1) Finished second in 4 of last 5 grass sprints at this distance.
Race Summary RUMINT pressed the pace-setting favorite on the turn before fading in a 6F turf sprint at Aqueduct before the stakes-placed winner of $175k passed by for the win in a NY-bred allowance. She should carry her speed farther from a favorable post in this spot. Bet to win and place.
            Laurel Park - Race #3
#6 DANCE FOR GREEN (5-2) Seeks third straight wire-to-wire victory against mostly nw/3 rivals.
#2 MASTER OF NONE (8-1) Can be excused for latest, rallied for second in prior two dirt routes.
#7 FIND FAITH (7-2) Changed tactics, went down fighting on front end at 6F off similar rest.
Race Summary DANCE FOR GREEN romped on the front end in a pair of short fields, the latest against 3-year-olds. She takes on elders again and stretches out to 7F but no reason to think Robb-trainee can’t do it again. Bet to win and place and play 6-2 and 6-7 exactas.

                  # 4 WATCH THIS BIRDIE 4/1
I've got to go with NOT SO CLOSE. Appears to be the type to be helped on Lasix here. Horses who have been prepared to race at this distance and surface by Casse have shown very solid results recently. This trainer has the best ROI in this group of horses with entries racing at this distance and surface. SISTER LOU ANN - This pick will feel the med change - on Lasix today. As of late Joseph has provided investors with a very good winning percentage with horses running in turf route races. WATCH THIS BIRDIE - Looks very good against this group and ought to be one of the front-runners. Has recorded reliable speed figures in turf route races in the past.

                    Lone Star Park - Race #4 - Post: 2:59pm - Allowance - 6.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $40,500 Class Rating: 83

                    Rating:

                    #3 BLINGO (ML=8/1)
                    #9 EUROROCKSTAR (ML=5/2)
                    #7 TEXAS PRADO (ML=8/1)

BLINGO - I usually like playing sprint horses who are 3-4 races into a comeback. Last ran at Lone Star Park and finished eighth. Reviewing his Past Performances, I see he was close at the wire, within 5 of the winner. EUROROCKSTAR - After the race aboard this horse on May 19th, the jock is going to be acquainted with the gelding much better. Likes to go to the front and the fact that today is a shorter trip should be favorable. TEXAS PRADO - Gelding took a little vacation, but has been racing into shape. This gelding is in good form, having run a strong race on June 8th, finishing fourth. Recent speed figures show solid pattern of improvement.

                    Vulnerable Contenders: #2 RECKLESS RED (ML=7/2), #8 OZZIES WINGS Y G (ML=5/1), #5 SUMMER HELP (ML=6/1),

RECKLESS RED - In the last event this entrant finished tenth. Doesn't look good for his chances in today's event. Somewhat easily forgotten speed rating last out at Lone Star Park at 5 furlongs. Don't believe this racer will improve too much in today's event. OZZIES WINGS Y G - Finished third in his most recent race with a quite unimpressive speed figure. When I look at today's class figure, it would take an improved performance to score after that in this field. SUMMER HELP - He's almost certainly going to get baked at the front. Have to put a question mark next to the last speed fig since it was acquired on a track listed as good. Don't believe this vulnerable equine will make a winning move in today's race. That last speed figure was mediocre when compared with today's class figure.

GUEST COMMENTARY: Hal - EUROROCKSTAR - Coming off his last race with the top speed figure of 79 at Lone Star Park. He is the gelding to beat today.

QUARTER HORSE 300Y, FOR THREE YEAR OLDS AND UPWARD WHICH HAVE NEVER WON TWO RACES. THREE YEAR OLDS, 124 LBS.; OLDER, 126 LBS.

                      RECOMMENDED CHOICES
                      # 8 MC EAGLE 4/1

                      # 5 JESS CASH PLEASE 3/1
I have to consider MC EAGLE here. SHE LOOKS POLITICAL - Should be given a shot here on the basis of the figs in the speed department alone. Tough to pass on this filly with Martinez in the irons. JESS CASH PLEASE - Is a solid contender based on figures posted lately under today's conditions. Cruz has an excellent return on investment over the past 30 days (+22) which ought to help gamblers with this pick.

                        Pleasanton - Race #4 - Post: 3:19pm - Maiden Special - 5.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $25,000 Class Rating: 71

                        Rating:

                        #7 RUNNIN ON PROMISES (ML=6/1)
                        #4 KNIGHTWITHLOUIS (ML=5/2)
                        #1 CORACORACORA (ML=15/1)

RUNNIN ON PROMISES - Rider and trainer do well when they work together. Espinoza and Bonde have been steady together. Looking at the past performances on all of these thoroughbreds, this is the only one to stalk. Worth a serious look at this horse. Ranked number 1 in EPS (earnings per start). Another notice that this equine outclasses this field. Has a decent chance to break maiden changing over to the main track right here. KNIGHTWITHLOUIS - O'Neill tried her against the males last time out. This should be a good spot. I really like that recent effort on May 26th at Golden Gate Fields where she finished second. The last speed figure of 64 is the highest last race speed rating in the group. CORACORACORA - The rider and trainer combination here have a high winning percentage when they work together. A 1st timer with this trainer. Wright wins a 27 percent of the time in these here situations.

                        Vulnerable Contenders: #2 CHATTY LEROYBROWN (ML=9/2), #3 BEACHLEY (ML=5/1), #5 SURF STAR (ML=5/1),

CHATTY LEROYBROWN - This filly hasn't had any positive efforts in short distance contests in the last 60 days. BEACHLEY - I prognosticate disappointment for this horse in this contest. SURF STAR - Not probable for this horse to do much running with no success lately in a sprint event.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Go with #7 RUNNIN ON PROMISES on top if we're getting at least 3/1 odds
