    Brian W. Spencer's Daily Picks

Presque Isle Downs - Race #2
#8 Chips Legacy Take a look at him on the track ahead of this, but I am not really afraid of most of them in here, and this debuter might have found the right kind of spot at first asking. Price should be OK.
#9 Awesome Fantasy He's an obvious threat on the drop, but honestly I would have liked to see something just a touch better in his first run over the footing. Overbet while dropping off a last-place finish?
#1 Speranzas Will Interested to see what kind of price he's going to offer, because he's probably the one to beat as the owner of some of the few finishing lines on any of these pages.
Race Summary Chips Legacy is a bit of a guess at first asking, but he might be good for a clunk-along try right out of the box that could keep him in the frame.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #7
#6 Serenade a Kitten She might be a little light for some of these right now, but I think she might have a sneaky claim on this as one of the few confirmed closers. There are a couple of solid forward players and other tracking types, and I wonder if she can settle and get past these with the last run at a price.
#8 Takemetothebeach She scored here at first asking last year before trying a couple stakes spots, and her recent Churchill turf try suggests the form is there to be competitive with this group. Worried a bit about a short price and the fact that she has given away ground in the stretch call of every race but her first.
#7 Jenny Lind She makes a lot of sense here while rising off the Turfway claim, but she has previously found this level to be a little tough. Not sure how she'll stack up with the locals at this condition, but I'd probably want a better price than we're going to get to find out.
Race Summary Serenade a Kitten has done some good work locally in the past and might get a decent setup from off the pace today. Takemetothebeach is going to be prominent on a lot of tickets, but I have a couple minor questions.
Presque Isle Downs - Race #8
#3 Silent Spectre Forward player has turned in a few good tries over synthetic footing at Turfway, so his form might stack up better today after the dull dirt try at Finger Lakes. He might build on that enough to be a threat here.
#8 Mackenzie's Novva Reliable finisher can be tough in here, but he's still eligible for this non-two spot with a page full of nothing but shares, so it wouldn't be a shock to see him find one or two of these a bit too good again today. Obvious chance, but I couldn't get too excited at anything like the 8/5 ML offering.
#4 Inappropriate Price might be a little bit better this time around after a solid finishing effort last out, but he's still winless over the local footing and doesn't always punch home with that kind of enthusiasm.
Race Summary I feel like you can build a case for a lot of these, but they also have a lot of questions to answer. #11 Ranseur is a tough call for me with some dangerous running lines, but his pace is pretty one dimensional and the wide draw probably doesn't do him any favors.

      Frank Carulli's Daily Picks

      Parx - Race #1
#5 BATTLIA (5-1) Has speed, has conquered this distance, price attached for new barn.
#7 NURSE CARALYN (5-1) ‘Closed well’ behind Battalia at 7F, use in all gimmick wagers.
#1 CORONA CAMPIONE (7-2) Lone two-race winner in field returns to claim level, seeks first sprint win.
Race Summary BATTALIA returns to her maiden-breaking distance after she led clear and held second at 7F last out. Her trainer is in the midst of a 4-for-16 run off the claim. Bet to win and place and play a 1-5-7 exacta box.
      Parx - Race #3
#6 POWER AND GLORY (10-1) Waited long time for first win but value remains for a playback.
#8 PUT THE CRAZY AWAY (8-5) Set pace, missed in photo finishes in last two starts at this level.
#4 MISS CINNAMON (3-1) Upstaged series of in-the-money finishes with two wins in last three starts.
Race Summary POWER AND GLORY broke through with a maiden win at age 6 in her 13th start. She took command in the opening half mile drew away from the pursuing 7-to-5 second favorite. She appears rounding to another good effort at a good price on the class hike. Play 4-6 and 6-8 exacta boxes.
      Parx - Race #5
#1 HARLEY’S CHARLY (5-1) Improved in second try off similar rest to start the year, good value play.
#3 DREAM KNIGHT (7-2) Romped in six-horse field in first start locally, carries 125 pounds.
#2 BIG JOHN (2-1) Big back numbers, big percentages for barn that claimed him last out.
Race Summary HARLEY’S CHARLY, first or second in 6 of 7 starts at this distance, flattened out after a brief bid at 7F, five weeks removed from a claim. He moved forward in her second start off a month-plus layoff in February. Bet to win and place.

            Presque Isle Downs - Race #1 - Post: 3:00pm - Claiming - 8.0 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $14,000 Class Rating: 66

            Rating:

            #6 OMIKAMI (ML=2/1)

OMIKAMI - This filly shows a classic pattern of layoff, two sprints, and stretching to a route today. Taking a trip down in the class scale; has the class to make her presence felt. I like the fact that this filly's last speed fig, 66, is tops in this field.

            Vulnerable Contenders: #2 VANILLA BEAN (ML=5/2), #3 XERCES (ML=7/2), #4 UPPITY UP (ML=4/1),

VANILLA BEAN - The Equibase speed figures continue to sink, 82/70/56. Not a healthy omen. Finished fifth in her most recent race with a somewhat easily forgotten speed fig. When I look at today's class rating, it would take an improved performance to win after that in this group. XERCES - She probably cannot repeat that last homestretch effort and win against this bunch. UPPITY UP - Difficult to put any money on this filly on the win end. Likes to end up on the board though.

STRAIGHT WAGERS: Play #6 OMIKAMI to win if you can get odds of 1/1 or more

              # 1 LOYAL COMPANY 2/1
              # 3 OTAGO 4/1
              # 6 UNDERDRESSED 10/1
LOYAL COMPANY looks to be a competitive contender. His 95 average has this gelding with among the most respectable Equibase speed figs in this event. The speed rating of 92 from his last race looks very good in here. He has recorded very good figures under today's conditions and will almost certainly fare well versus this group of animals. OTAGO - Horses trained by Danner in turf route races are frequently sound. Is difficult not to examine based on speed figures which have been competitive - 97 avg - of late. UNDERDRESSED - Has been racing in the most competitive company of the group of horses in this race recently.

                # 3 HALFINTHEWRAPPER 8/5
KATE'S PRINCESS seems to be the bet in here. Boasts strong speed figures on average overall when compared with the rest of this group. Earned a solid speed fig last time out. Is a sharp contender based on figures recorded lately under today's conditions. MAJESTIC GIG - Cumberbatch has been on fire the last month, winning at a nifty 17 percent clip. With a strong 75 speed figure last time out, will definitely be a factor in this competition. HALFINTHEWRAPPER - This pony is highly ranked this field in earnings per start at the distance/surface. Looks to have a very good class edge based on the recent company kept.

                  Parx Racing - Race #12 - Post: 5:41pm - Claiming - 6.5 furlongs on the Dirt. Purse: $18,000 Class Rating: 73

                  Rating:

                  #13 ABIDALE (ML=5/1)
                  #9 JULIET'S MUSIC (ML=12/1)
                  #10 CAPTIVATING CARA (ML=9/2)

ABIDALE - Aguilar should have her moving solid on the turn. Last raced at Parx Racing carrying 7 pounds more. The lower impost in today's race should serve her well. Last time around the track was at Parx Racing in a race with a class rating of 82. Dropping considerably in class figure in today's event puts her in a solid position in this race. JULIET'S MUSIC - Smith brings her back again. I propose you stay with this strong mare. I like the way this mare's finish positions have gotten better with each start recently. A sign of a thoroughbred coming into top form. Have to like the way Smith has raced this mare back into shape off the layoff. Equine is well spotted in this sprint and I think she'll run well today. CAPTIVATING CARA - You always have to be on the watch for money generating rider/trainer tandems; we have one right here. Mare had the second fastest workout of the day prepping for this. Racing at a similar level as last race on May 21st at Parx Racing. I think Brown has found a good spot for her, and I like her chances in this race.

                  Vulnerable Contenders: #7 GOOD PENNY (ML=7/2), #6 HIGHTIME VALENTINE (ML=4/1), #11 PRINCESS SOPHIE (ML=5/1),

GOOD PENNY - Tough to play any pony in a short distance race if she hasn't hit the board in a sprint in the last couple months. May 22nd is the last time we've seen this mare around. Have to be a little bit leery. HIGHTIME VALENTINE - If you keep betting these kind of 'bridesmaid' types, you're going to be frustrated frequently. PRINCESS SOPHIE - Most of the time I need a sprinter to have some recent good showings in sprint races in order to wager on her. 5/1 odds isn't enough for this participant when examining the most recent efforts.
