                    CELTICS OVER 196

The Cleveland Cavaliers have been the NBA's best team for a huge majority of the season, Now it's time for them to really prove it.

Likely 2008-09 MVP winner LeBron James will lead the Cavaliers against Detroit Pistons in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference First rd playoffs this afternoon from Quicken Loans Arena in Cleveland.

Prior to Wednesday's overtime home loss to Philadelphia, Cleveland's last loss to an Eastern Conference team was on April 30th, 2008 to the Washington Wizards in Game 5 of their 1st round playoff series.

Mo Williams will be the player to watch for the Cavaliers, as he averaged 17 points vs. Detroit in the regular season & shot a blistering 47 percent from 3-point range.

I look for Cleveland to beat an Allen-Iverson less Pistons team in Game 1 & continue their season-long homecourt dominance.

                    All CAVS.

Portland might be the youngest team in the playoffs, but they will be ready to show off their talent tonight in Game 1 of a Western Conference 1st rd series against the Houston Rockets.

Blazers guard Brandon Roy is a rising superstar who continues to improve every year, as he averaged a career-high 22.6 points per game this season.

Tonight will also be the playoff debut for Greg Oden, who missed all of last season with a foot injury.

Yao Ming actually struggled against Portland this season, as he averaged 16.7 points & 8.7 rebounds on just 43% shooting in 3 games against them.

Ron Artest struggled as well, as he averaged 15 points per game on just 36% shooting in 3 games.

Look for Portland to take their home opener behind a raucous crowd at the Rose Garden tonight.

                    All PORTLAND.

After a spirited comeback yesterday to notch their 1st win at the brand-new Yankee Stadium, New York will look to keep things rolling against the Cleveland Indians.

This game will feature a matchup of struggling pitchers, as Indians righthander Fausto Carmona (0-2, 9.00) will be opposed by Yankees righthander Chien-Ming Wang (0-2, 28.93).

Carmona is 0-3 in his career against New York with a 4.22 ERA.

Wang was 1-1 last season in 2 starts against Cleveland with a 1.93 ERA & struck out 13 batters, which is the highest total among all opposing AL teams.

Look for the Yankees to win again at home, which will present them a chance to take the series tomorrow against ex-teammate Carl Pavano.

                    All YANKEES.

                          The real animal

                          Pick title: 2* Portland -4 1/2
                          Pick Date: 04/18/2009
                          Pick description:
Portland really peaking having won six straight to end the season with five straight covers. The defense yielded 82.4 points a game in their last five. Blazers on fire at home finishing 34-7. Houston a game under .500 on the road and struggled versus the elite on foreign hardwoods down the stretch losing games at Dallas, Phoenix, Utah, and the Lakers by an average of just under 10 points per game. Portland, making their first playoff appearance in seven years, will be ecstatic for this one. The Blazers are 12-1 ATS at home the past two years following three consecutive wins and outscoring opponents by 14 per game in those 13 contests. Plus it’s difficult to go against this one: Portland 8-0 ATS this year after a home blowout by 20 points or more and outscoring those foes 107-89. Throw in 9-0 ATS the last two years at home after yielding 80 or less last time out. That 104-76 lopsided win over Denver at home on Wednesday puts Portland in this perfect spread scenario Saturday night. Brandon Roy has been unstoppable all year and his offensive mentality will really test Ron Artest. Rockets just rely way too much on Yao Ming and I suspect Przybilla and Aldridge can get Ming in foul trouble. Surprisingly this series has produced four consecutive ‘OVERS’ and Portland is 8-1 ‘OVER’ at home this year as a six-point favorite or less. I’m not sold on Battier or Brooks on the road to assist Yao enough. Take Portland minus the small number.

Analysis: Stan is Betting PORTLAND/HOUSTON UNDER today. This is Playoff Basketball where every possession means so much more than a regular season game. Stan says this match up will be a defensive war tonight as these two teams will struggle to get to 90. Stan has this game landing in the mid 80's producing a final total of 172-175. Jeff Scott

                                --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Arizona +146 over SAN FRANCISCO: (Added) The Diamondbacks are 4-1 in Davis' last 5 starts vs. a team with a losing record, while the Giants are 0-7 in their last 7 during game 2 of a series. Doug Davis has not started out that great as he is 0-2 with a 4.15 ERA, but he will be facing a giant team that is 29th in scoring (3.5 rpg) and 25th in hiting (.237). The Giants have really struggled of late as they have averaged just 2.3 rpg in their last 7 games. The D-Backs have not been great offensively as they have averaged just 3.8 rpg (28th), but it may be coming around a bit as they have averaged 4.7 rpg in their last 3 games. Today they will be facing Tim Lincecum who is off to his own rocky start as he is 0-1 with a 7.56 ERA in his first 2 starts this year. Both pitchers have struggled out the gate, but I belive the D-Backs offense will have a beter time of it today and walk away with the upset.

Kansas City/ Texas Over 9: (Added) The Over is 12-4 in Royals last 16 road games vs. a team with a losing record, while the Over is 8-1-1 in Rangers last 10 games vs. a right-handed starter and 5-1-1 in Rangers last 7 games with the total set at 9.0-10.5. The Royals offense is coming around as they have averaged 7 rpg in their last 5 games. Today they will have a tough time of it as Millwood has posted a solid 0.64 ERA in his 1st 2 starts, but Kevin does own a 4.66 ERA in 11 starts vs the Royals, plus he has a 4.96 ERA in 47 career starts at Rangers Ballpark. The Rangers offense scored just 3 runs last night, but this team still averages 9.3 rpg at home and they should be able to score vs Greinke who has yet to allow an ER this year. That certainly can't go on forever. Rangers Ballpark was the top scoring park in the league last year and it has picked up where it left of as their games have averaged 16.3 rpg. I see another double digit run total in this one.

                                2 UNIT PLAYS

CHICAGO -130 over St Louis: The Cardinals are 1-5 in Lohses last 6 road starts, while the Cubs are 12-2 in Dempsters last 14 starts during game 3 of a series and 17-5 in his last 22 home starts, plus the Home team is 10-2 in Iassognas last 12 games behind home plate. Ryam Demster had a great year pitching at home last year as he was 14-3 with a 2.86 ERA in 20 starts at Wrigley last year, including a 2-0 mark with a 2.31 ERA in 2 home starts vs the Cards. Kyle Lohse has started 7 games vs the Cubs and he is 1-2 with a 5.15 ERA in those starts. The Cards are off to nice start this year, but the Cubs at home with Dempster is the play.

Pittsburgh/ Atlanta Under 9: The Under is 6-1-1 in Reyes' last 8 starts during game 2 of a series and 10-3 in Reyes' last 13 road starts, while the Under is 5-1-1 in Pirates last 7 games as a home favorite and 7-0 in Snells last 7 starts with the total set at 9.0-10.5. Both teams have been struggling lately to score runs as the Braves have averaged just 1.8 rpg in their last 4 games, while the Pirates have averaged just 2.8 rpg in their last 5 games. The Pirates last 7 games have averaged just 5.8 rpg, while thier home games have averaged just 6 rpg. The pitching isn't that tough, but I don't see the hitting breaking through in this one.

                                1 UNIT PLAYS

NY YANKS -127 over Cleveland: The Indians are 1-5 in Carmonas last 6 road starts vs. a team with a winning record, while the Yankees are 7-1 in Wangs last 8 starts as a home favorite of -110 to -150. Both starters have struggled to start the year, but Wang will have the better go of it as the Yanks take game 3 of this series.

Cincinnati +119 over HOUSTON: (Added)The Reds are 21-10 in Harangs last 31 starts as an underdog and 4-1 in his last 5 road starts vs. Astros, while the Astros are 2-8 in their last 10 games vs. a starter with a WHIP less than 1.15 and 0-4 in Rodriguezs last 4 home starts vs. Reds. Houston just can't hit right now as they have scored just 2.3 rpg in their last 7 games. Wandy Rodriguez has struggled vs the Reds as he is 3-4 with a 5.07 ERA vs them. Aaron Harang is 8-7 with a 4.45 ERA in 19 starts vs the 'Stros, including a 5-4 mark with a 3.75 ERA at Minute Maid Park. Houston has won just 2 of their last 8 games, while the Reds have won 4 of their last 5. Go with the hotter team here.
