Fred Wallin's Total Play of the Day
Tampa Bay Rays vs. Seattle Mariners (Apr 21 10:10 PM)
Over 8.5 (100.0)
Sonnastine is the one soft tosser in the Rays rotation, while Washburn has pitched well so far, but that can't last as his stuff is hardly what it was a couple of years ago.. Look for lots of runs.
Philly limped into the playoffs and then proceeded to get whacked in game one before something collectively went off in the players and since game one we’ve all seen a dramatic difference in the Flyers heart, grit and determination. Nobody can deny that they’re not talented. In fact, they should be up 2-1 with a chance to go up 3-1 but the zebras wouldn’t have anything of that and in case you missed it you can read it about just about everywhere. Aside from game one, the Flyers have been the better team and it hasn’t been close and now they have momentum and they’ll probably get a few calls go their way in this one because they’ve had so many go against them so far. The Flyers have a different feel to them right now and it’s a good one. They’ll tie it up tonight; you can just see it in their body language and their play. Play: Philadelphia -½ +1.25 (Risking 2 units).

BALTIMORE -½ +1.24 over Chicago (1st 5 innings)
The South Side is playing decent ball and they’re usually pretty tough but the fact is when Jose Contreras pitches their chances of winning decease dramatically. The White Sox have lost just three of its last eight and two of those losses were Contreras’s starts. He comes in with a 6.97 ERA in two starts and this is not an easy park to pitch in for struggling hurlers. The Orioles ran into some very tough pitching in Boston (Lester, Penny, Beckett, Masterson) so I wouldn’t be too concerned about their bats being cooled off. They’re still among the major league leaders in all key offensive categories. The O’s will send out rookie Brad Bergesen. He was the organization's Minor League Pitcher of the Year last season and this year he’s 1-1 with a 2.45 ERA at Triple-A Norfolk. In the spring he posted a 3.09 ERA and what’s more significant is that he struck out 11 and walked just one in 11.2 innings. The White Sox have yet to see face him and that, too, works in our favor. Play: Baltimore in the first five innings -½ +1.24 (Risking 2 units).
TORONTO –1½ +1.01 over Texas
Take the top scoring team in the majors (87 runs), combine that with perhaps the best starter in the league or one of the top three for sure, throw in a Texas team that is winless on the road in three tries and that has a bunch of young hitters facing Halliday and what you have is the makings of an easy win for the home side. The Rangers Pen has an ERA of 7.68 and a 9.21 ERA over its last three starts. In two career starts at the Rogers Center, Brandon McCarthy is 0-2 with a 5.34 ERA and this edition of the Blue Jays will be his toughest to date. Play: Toronto –1½ +1.01 (Risking 2 units).
Detroit +1.01 over L.A. ANGELS
Jered Weaver has a BAA of .311 in two starts. Armando Gallaraga has a BAA of .191 in the same two starts. In 13.1 innings combined against Texas and the White Sox, Gallaraga has allowed one run. In his last start in that pitchers park in Seattle, Weaver allowed 10 hits and four runs in five innings. The Tigers are hot with six ins in its last eight and an overall record of 7-5 while the Angels are cold with one win in its last six and an overall record of 4-8. Furthermore, the Tigers have one of the best hitting line-ups in the majors while the Angels are seeing BB’s and own one of the worst offenses to date. It’s not a big take-back but any tag on the Tigers in this spot has to be considered very good value. Play: Detroit +1.01 (Risking 2 units).
Play: LAKERS
Comments: The Los Angeles Lakers will look for a more complete effort tonight during Game 2 of their 1st round series against the Utah Jazz. The Lakers cruised to a 21-point lead at halftime in Game 1, but the Jazz got it within single digits during the 3rd quarter which didn't please Los Angeles head coach Phil Jackson. Kobe Bryant led the Lakers with 24 points & 8 rebounds, but also committed 6 of the team's 17 turnovers. Trevor Ariza stepped it up with a playoff career-high 21 points on 8-of-10 shooting while Pau Gasol added 20 points, 9 rebounds & 4 blocked shots. Carlos Boozer finally showed signs of life by scoring a game-high 27 points for Utah, while Deron Williams added 16 points & 17 assists despite shooting just 4-of-14 from the field. Even though Los Angeles shot 55 percent from the field in Game 1, they allowed Utah to grab 20 offensive rebounds. Look for a better & more spirited effort from the Lakers tonight, as they will win to take a 2-0 series lead. All Lakers.

Play: PISTONS
Comments: The Detroit Pistons will see if their claim of "trying to be more physical" with LeBron James will come true tonight, as they will try to get even with the top-seeded Cleveland Cavaliers in Game 2 of their 1st-round series. James dominated Game 1, as he scored a game-high 38 points while grabbing 8 rebounds & dishing out 7 assists during the Cavaliers' 102-84 win. James did get help from his supporting cast, as four other Cavs finished in double-figures. Rodney Stuckey led the Pistons with 20 points despite shooting just 7-for-21 from the field. If Detroit plans to tie this series up tonight, they must get more production out of Tayshaun Prince. Prince scored just 4 points in 37 minutes during the Game 1 loss & will be the main defender of James for most of the game. Look for Game 2 to be closer, but for Cleveland to prevail & take a 2-0 series lead. All Pistons.
