        2009 Record: 99-76, +52.8950 Johnstones
        Sunday: 4-3, +2.75 units

        Piece by piece today.

CLEVELAND +103 (2 UNITS) - Fausto Carmona has shown steady improvement. His fastball has been steadily increasing in speed since the beginning of April and the break on most pitches has been much crisper and more effective. Meanwhile, Brian Tallet was absolutely crushed in his last start to the tune of 10 earned runs. For some reason, his two seam fastball was flat and 6 mph off in his last start. Tallet is a reliever by trade who is being forced to start due to injuries. Last season, he threw no more than 39 pitches in any single appearance and in 4 MLB years prior to his last two starts, he has never thrown more than 49 pitches in any appearance. He now comes in off back to back efforts having thrown 93 pitches in each outing and has only lasted 9 2/3 innings in the two combined starts. The Indians are hitting a solid .286 against lefthanders and it can't hurt the scouting assignments to know that Tallet was with the Indians earlier in his career when they gave up on him as a starter..

SAN FRANCISO +178 (1.5 UNITS) - I expected some regression this year from Ryan Dempster and he has been mediocre at best so far. He certainly will put forth better efforts in the near future but now may be a good time to fade him especially at inflated prices like these. In his last 4 starts, he has tossed 24 innings and allowed 23 hits, 16 earned runs, a 6.00 ERA and he has issued 11 walks. He is clearly not getting the same bite on his fast ball. Jonathan Sanchez has tossed 12 2/3 consecutive innings without allowing an earned run and seems to be getting very little respect here. The Cubs are hitting just .229 early against southpaws and the Cubs' pen still doesn't seem to be working at maximum efficiency. Carlos Marmol is far from peak form and has thrown 90 pitches the last 5 days and has walked 9 batters in 3 1/3 innings and Kevin Gregg has tossed 96 pitches the past 5 days. At this price, there are a lot of factors pointing towards the Giantrs.

ARIZONA +136 (1.75 UNITS) - Doug Davis has been outstanding in 3 of his last 4 starts and is sporting a very impressive 27:10 K:BB ratio in 34 innings this year. Meanwhile, Eric Stultz is not in good form. In his last three starts, he has lasted just 12 2/3 innings and allowed 19 hits, 19 earned runs and a 6:10 K:BB ratio. The Dbacks don't hit lefties well but there is a lot of value in this matchup based upon the Dodgers 10-0 home record against the Padres. Rockies and Giants.

                              5 Dime Run Line Release

Chicago Cubs (Dempster) -1 1/2 Runs over San Francisco (Sanchez)

The Cubs are getting healthy and they're finally starting to hit the way everyone expected as the offense keyed a three-game weekend sweep of the Marlins by putting 20 runs on the board. Keying the attack was Derrek Lee, whose grand slam Sunday was his second round-tripper in as many days. The lineup should get an additional boost tonight against San Francisco with the expected return of third baseman Aramis Ramirez, who was batting .352 with three homers and 14 RBI before being sidelined the past week. And Ramirez has been a Giant-killer at Wrigley Field, hitting .348 and driving in seven runs in San Francisco's last six visits to the Windy City.

But Ramirez hasn't been the only Cub feasting on San Fran's pitching at Wrigley. The Giants have dropped five of their last seven in Chicago in large part because of a 5.22 ERA compiled by its pitching staff. And this year's pitchers have also struggled on the road, where the team is off to a 2-7 start, as noted by its 5.79 ERA on the highway.

Has Ryan Dempster struggled in the past against San Francisco? Absolutely, but this play is predicated on Chicago's offense; thus the run line release. And, you might recall Dempster's teammate, Ted Lilly, had always fared poorly against Florida before dominating the Marlins at home over the weekend. Plus, although the Giants just took two-of-three at home versus the Rockies, they managed a total of just five runs in those games against a beleaguered Colorado pitching staff.
