    6-28-09

    Jack Clayton Guaranteed Selections
    Date: Sunday, June 28, 2009

5* Red Sox (959) at Braves: There are a lot of problems for the home team. Boston is red hot and patient at the plate. They love to draw walks and Atlanta starter Tommy Hanson has walked 15 in 23 innings, a terrible ratio. And he's getting worse, walking 14 in his last three starts (17 innings). The Red Sox feast off pitchers who walk too many batters, clogging the bases. Hanson may be 3-0, but he's allowed a whopping 38 base runners in 23 innings! Boston has a great bullpen, plus starter Brad Penny has been very good, 6-2. He has a sizzling 1.62 ERA his last three starts. The wrong team opened as the favorite. Play the Red Sox!

    Indian Cowboy:

4 Unit Play. Take Under 9.5 LA Angels @ Arizona Diamondbacks (Sunday @ 4pm est). Let's hit the well once again with the Under in Arizona similar to yesterday. Bear in mind that Matt Palmer comes off a rough start where he gave up 6 runs in in less than 5 innings against the Rockies at home losing 1-11. After that start, he was obviously dissappointed with his effort as the Memphis native had put together three straight quality starts prior to that. Tack that on with the fact Arizona has lost back to back games to the Angels coming into this game, they will look to Scherzer for a strong outing and to avoid the sweep. Scherzer has been one of the brighter spots in the Arizona rotation of late as he has a 3.53 era and is 3-0 over his last 3 starts giving up 4 runs over his last 4 starts which comprises of nearly 25 innings. I look for a strong effort from Palmer who is on the bounce-back as well as Scherzer who has pitched strong of late and who will attempt to help his team avoid the sweep at home this afternoon. The Angels are an Underdog to the tune of 4-0-2 when they are an underdog by this margin and the Under is 5-1 in Scherzer's last game of a 3 game series

              Wunderdog

Kansas City Royals vs. Pittsburgh Pirates:

              Pittsburgh Pirates +1½-120

Zack Greinke started the season on fire, posting eight wins in his first ten starts and putting up a ridiculous 0.84 ERA over that span. Then something happened which we see often in sports - regression to the mean. Greinke is good but not that good, and over his next four games he went 0-2 with a 5.19 ERA. He pitched well last outing but the fact remains, he's still overrated. The Royals are 2-5 in their last seven games averaging just 3.0 runs per game. They are averaging 3.4 runs per game on the road on the season. They are 13-31 since early May - the worst record in the American League by far. They do not deserve to be laying this kind of wood on the road. Especially against a Pittsburgh team that scores nearly five runs per game at home and has posted a 21-13 mark here (22-12 against the run line). The Pirates are 5-1 in their last six, putting up 5.6 runs per game in the process. While the Pirates can win this, Greinke has been good. But to ask the Royals to put up enough runs to win on the road by 2+ runs is really asking a lot. KC is 16-25 on the road against the run line the past two seasons after 4+ straight road games. They are 4-11 this season after three straight losses. Even with Greinke on the mound, the Royals are just 3-11 against the run line on the road the past two seasons when coming off a loss.
The Pirates are 10-1 vs. the run line at home in June and I look for that to go t 11-1 today.

              Pittsburgh Pirates +1½-120
