Top pick: #8 (FASTER) - Filly hasn't raced since November 3, but will run for the first time for trainer Pete Walder and will also race with blinkers on. Trainer wins first out with 31% of his new stock and at a 20% rate on the blinker angle. Can take this at a square price.
2nd pick: #1 (Sphynx Key) - Virtually eased in her latest in a switched race here June 15. Previous turf race (a sprint at Pimlico) indicates she likes the grass and should run well in this spot.
3rd pick: #5 (Arms Race) - Improving runner finished a pace-setting second in an "off the turf" event here on June 7. Bred for turf success, she should be competitive today in her first race on the infield.
4th pick: #6 (Scene Not Heard) - Filly returns to the grass after racing competitively in a pair of "off the turf" races on the local dirt. Last turf race saw her just miss at this price racing at Pimlico on May 14

The Twins have not been good on the road this season, and with Nick Blackburn on the hill tonight for this one, those numbers get even worse. Blackburn has put up good numbers this season, entering this one with a 6-3 mark and 3.11 ERA. What doesn't show up in that record is the fact that the Twins are 3-6 on the season when he takes the mound on the road, and 8-20 for his career! Luke Hochover has not produced good numbers, but in his last four starts he has pitched three very good games, and in his last four starts has pitched to a 3.71 ERA. Hochover has been 5-1 starting after the Royals allowed two runs or less runs in their previous game. The Twins have also lost five of their last seven against the Royals. I'm going with the Royals in this one.

Chicago's offense has come alive of late, keying a 6-2 spurt in which the team has averaged 6.25 runs per game, scoring six or more runs in five of those eight outings. Tonight the White Sox get their whacks against Carl Pavano, who has allowed 31 hits and 23 runs - all earned - in his last three starts that covered a total of 13.1 innings. And those outings were against the Pirates, Brewers and Royals. With the exception of Milwaukee, we're not talking about teams that put a lot of runs on the board in the first place.



The Indians, as a team, have struggled all season, and they enter this game mired in a 2-10 slump following home losses to the Reds 7-3 Saturday and 8-1 Sunday. Tonight they'll face Chicago's most consistent pitcher of late, Gavin Floyd, who has rebounded from a dreadful start of the season to go 3-1 with a 1.60 ERA in his last eight starts. One of those outings came against Cleveland at home on June 6 when he fanned seven and held the Tribe to five hits and two runs, one of which was earned, in 6.2 innings to pick up the win. In all, the Pale Hose have won four of Floyd's last five starts.



Pavano's last good start came against Chicago back on June 5 when he fired a three-hit road shutout. But that came against a White Sox team that was in the process of losing eight of 10 games. His struggles at home this season are well-chronicled: a 7.13 ERA in six starts in which he's allowed 57 baserunners in 35.1 innings. That combined with the sad state of Cleveland's bullpen this season, plus the cheap price of this line, makes Chicago an attractive proposition.
