Al DeMarco
Al DeMarco Wednesday's Play 5 Dime - CHICAGO WHITE SOX
Chicago's offense continues to click as the White Sox have plated 17 runs while taking the first two games of this series in Cleveland. The Pale Hose have averaged 6.7 runs during their current 8-2 spurt, scoring six or more in seven of those 10 outings. Tonight they get to attack Jeremy Sowers, who has lost each of his last four starts against them, allowing 31 baserunners in 18.1 innings while compiling a 6.87 ERA.
The Indians have scored just seven runs in the first two games of this series after being held to a total of four runs in dropping the final two games of a home series versus Cincinnati over the weekend. A lack of timely hitting plus an unreliable bullpen has resulted in Cleveland's current 2-12 slump.
Chicago's Jose Contreras is 2-2 with a 2.15 ERA in four starts since being recalled from the minors. He's 4-2 lifetime against Cleveland with an earned run average of 3.34 in a dozen starts.
Considering the recent and opposite performances of these two teams, plus the fact that Cleveland is 2-8 in games started by Sowers this season, this price on Chicago is simply too good to pass up. The White Sox are on a 12-4 run on the road, where they're hitting .284 this season. And, they've scored 31 runs and batted .370 during their current four-game winning streak with Paul Konerko (5 HR last 11 games), Jermaine Dye (.516 last eight games) and Gordon Beckham (.588 and 5 RBI in last five games) powering the offense.
Books must be thinking the Indians are due for a win, but I don't see it here against the White Sox. Jose Contreras has been solid over his last three starts, posting a 2.95 ERA and a 0.98 WHIP, while Cleveland starter, Jeremy Sowers is only 1-5 overall this season with a 6.10 ERA and 1.62 WHIP. Over their last 7 games, the White Sox are 6-1 scoring 7.3 runs per game with a .327 team batting average, while the Indians are 1-6 with a team batting average of .227 and are scoring only 4 runs per game. I'll take the White Sox at this price in this situation.
