      Handicapper: IndianCowboy
Game: Milwaukee Brewers @ Cincinnati Reds - Thursday July 16, 2009 7:10 pm
Pick: 4 units (Play of the Day) TOTAL: Under 9.5 (-120)

4 Unit Play. Take Under 9.5 between the Milwaukee Brewers vs. Cincinatti Reds (Thursday @ 7:10pm est). Both of these pitchers have the propensity for a strong outing today. Braden Looper, the Wichita State alum, comes off giving up 5 runs in 6 innings against the Dodgers at home. He faces the Reds as he comes off a non-quality start, and prior to that he had given up 6 runs in the last 18 innings. Homer Bailey, the La Grange, Texas native is back for the Reds. He has made four starts as he gets his feet wet and each start has progressively gotten better. In his last two starts, he has given up 4 runs in over 13 innings for back to back quality starts - granted he didn't pick up a win in either start. The Under is 4-1 when the Brewers face a pitcher with a WHIP greater than 1.30 and the Under is 8-0 for the Reds when they are favorites by this margin.

Game: Philadelphia Phillies @ Florida Marlins - Thursday July 16, 2009 7:10 pm
Pick: 4 units (Play of the Day) MONEYLINE: Philadelphia Phillies +110

4 Unit Play. Take Philadelphia Phillies +110 over the Florida Marlins (Thursday @ 7:10pm est). The Phillies have great value today given that Jamie Moyer is on the mound. He faced the Marlins earlier this season and lost 3-5 in Philadelphia as he gave up 4 runs in 6 innings and he looks to get some revenge from that contest. Bear in mind the Pennsylvania native comes off one of his worst starts of the year as he closed the first half of the season giving up 6 runs in in 5 innings against the Reds. Granted, Moyer did win that contest, but his era has balooned to 5.99 as he is 8-6 on the year. Moyer for the most part when he comes off a rough start, puts together a quality start in his next outing - and we get him with revenge against the Marlins. As a side note, this is a pivotal series as well as the Phillies are atop the division but the Marlins are on their heels as well in the NL East. Volstad comes off a brilliant start where he pitched a complete game, five hit shutout of the Giants on the road. But, as someone who has followed Volstad closely, he is 0-8 when he comes off a quality start in his last apperance (which feeds into the notion that Volstad typically has a let down after a great start). The Phillies are 5-0 over their last 5 games and 4-0 when Moyer starts of late. As a final note, the Marlins are 1-4 when the total is set at this range with Volstad on the mound.

Thursday's play 10 Dime -- Rockies (Cook) over PADRES (Gaudin)

                    ROCKIES
NOTE: List only Cook as Colorado's starting pitcher

The All-Star break couldn’t have come at a better time for the Padres.

San Diego has lost 21 of its last 29 games, including a no-hit defeat Friday at the hands of Giants lefty Jonathan Sanchez. Unfortunately for the Padres, there is still nearly half a season left.

Rockies right-hander Aaron Cook (8-3, 3.98 ERA) gives first crack at San Diego, and he’s been outstanding against the team throughout his career. Cook is 5-1 with a 1.61 ERA in his last eight starts in San Diego, and allowed one run on five hits in eight innings there on May 5.

Cook is 12-4 with a 2.71 ERA in 22 lifetime appearances (20 starts) against the Padres.

Right-hander Chad Gaudin (4-7, 5.03) will take the mound for San Diego. He has pitched against Colorado just once in his career, allowing three runs and seven hits in 4 2/3 innings for Tampa Bay in June 2004.

The Padres have had trouble scoring runs this season, reaching double figures in a game Sunday for the first time this season. Meanwhile, Colorado has scored seven runs or more in three of its last five games, and is 29-13 since Jim Tracy replaced Clint Hurdle as manager.

That’s not a good combination for San Diego entering the second half of what promises to be a long season for the team. The Padres’ misery resumes today. Take the Rockies in this one.

The Milwaukee Brewers stumbled heading into the All-Star Break and there is no reason to think that will get turned around when they send Braden Looper to the mound today, who is coming off an outing in which he gave up 4 home runs. He is 3-3 with a 6.06 ERA on the road this year and went 3.3 innings giving up 5 runs in his only appearance in Cincinnati this year. The Reds hand the ball to Homer Bailery, who is 1-0 with a 3.44 ERA in his three starts since being brought back up to the big leagues on June 27th. The Reds are 24-8 at home the last three years when taking on a team with a bullpen ERA of over 6 spanning their last 10 games. The Reds are also 12-5 when playing a team they have lost back-to-back games to.

I look for Aaron Cook to get back on track tonight after a shaky outing heading into the Break. Before struggling against the Braves Cook had a 1.98 ERA in six previous outings. He has also dominated the Padres in San Diego, going 5-1 with a 1.61 ERA and is 12-4 with a 2.71 ERA lifetime against tonight's opponent. The Rockies offense has been hot as well, scoring seven or more runs in three of their last five. Colorado is 29-13 since Jim Tracy took over as manager so expect a strong second half out of this team starting tonight. The Padres on the other hand have lost 21 of their last 29. Don't be worry about Colorado's recent success coming mostly at home as road favorites with a money line of -125 or more after 7 or more consecutive home games in July are 51-12 (81%) since 1997.

Wandy Rodriguez is having a breakout season and he went 3-0 with a 1.86 ERA over his last four starts of the first half, which includes coming off a shutout of Pittsburgh. Last time Wandy faced the Dodgers was April 23rd, when he held them to one run and six hits in five innings. Houston ranks third in the majors with a .293 batting average against left-handers, so I expect them to get to Wolf tonight and pick up enough wins for Wandy to grab the win.

                        15* on Seattle Mariners +185

Take the Mariners over the Indians tonight as a huge underdog. This line is based heavily on the starting pitching match up. Last year's Cy Young Award Winner, Cliff Lee is going for the Indians. Lee has not enjoyed nearly as much success this season, posting a respectable 3.47 ERA, but earning just a 4-9 record for the Indians, including a 2-6 record at home. Lee has labored through his 3 most recent starts, going 0-3 with a 7.31 ERA and 1.94 WHIP. Considering that the Indians have one of the worst bullpens in baseball, sporting a 5.18 ERA, 13-17 record, and 53.3% save conversion percentage, there is no way the Indians should be favored so heavily. Offensively the Indians have the edge overall, but they are hitting just .247 and scoring just 3.7 runs per game over their last 7 games, a major contributing factor to their 2-5 record over that span. Seattle has been surprisingly consistent this season, coming into tonight's game with a 46-42 record overall, compare that to Cleveland's 35-54 mark, including a 19-25 record at home, and you can see why I like the Mariners at this price Thursday night.

                        15* on Washingotn Nationals +115

It's pretty rare to take baseball's worst team, but I will play them small tonight against the Cubs. National's starter, John Lannan, has been nothing but solid at home this season, going 3-0 with a 2.20 ERA and 1.19 WHIP in 9 starts in Washington. Meanwhile, Cubs' starter, Rich Harden, has put together just one quality start in his last three appearances, going 1-2 with a 7.71 ERA and 2.14 WHIP. The Nationals are actually out-scoring the Cubs this season, 4.4 runs per game to 4.1 runs per game, and though Washington's bullpen is always a concern, Chicago has had plenty of trouble out of their relief staff on the road as well. This is a perfect spot for the Nats to pick up their 27th win of the season.

                        20* No-Brainer on Brewers/Reds UNDER 9.5

Take the UNDER with a pair of teams who are really struggling to produce runs right now. The Brewers are just 2-5 over their last 7 games, and hitting just .257 as a team while scoring just 3.7 runs per game. The Reds are also 2-5 over their past 7 games, posting a team batting average of just .230, and putting up a mere 3.3 runs per game. Both starters have put up ERAs under 4.00 over their past three starts, while both bullpens here have also earned ERAs under 4.00 for the season. There's no reason to believe either team breaks out of their hitting slump tonight. The under is my strongest play today.

100,000* GAME OF THE DAY! Your winner here is on the Cubs.

I do like the lefty John Lannan and have backed him when getting some quality coin back. I also o believe that the Nats are better than their record and will start winning some games in the near future. But with that said this njumber is still a bit ridiculous!?!?!?

The Cubs have not been very good as they sit around the .500 mark but they also are going to play better ball as Aramis Ramirez gets fully back in the mix and starts feeling healthier. This team was expected to be in the 90's in terms of wins but have not played nearly the ball that was expected with the injuries playing somewhat of a part.

Chicago has a bunch of competent righty bats with Soriano, Lee, Ramirez, Theriot and others and being up against a Southpaw can be nothing but good today. Even if Lannan pitches well that Washington bullpen has been fairly terrible this season and could easily give up that four spot in an 8th or 9th inning.

Rich Harden has not been the Rich Harden we have known as the righty has been terrible at times. But you still have to respect that upside which he still shows every few starts and has to potential for that side of him to come out today.

When comparing this price of the Cubs at around a pick here in Washington to the random NBA game laying the 100 either way you clearly see the better deal of the two and I'm taking advantage of it!
