        Speculating sports

We went 3-1 yesterday, making up for our poor performance on Saturday. Tonight we have 3 plays, including a couple of 3 unit selections. Enjoy.

LA Dodgers at St. Louis 7:05pm EST
        Selection: LA DODGERS +1.5 -140
Profile: The total in this game is currently set at 7.5, so taking the plus run line here has a great deal of value, especially the Cardinals and Chris Carpenter being overpriced. The Dodgers starting pitcher, lefty Randy Wolf, has actually pitched just as well as Carpenter recently. He has allowed an average of only one base runner per inning and an ERA of 3.20 in his last three starts. Meanwhile, he has lasted twenty innings total, while giving up only sixteen hits in those three starts. St. Louis has really struggled against lefties this season, hitting .232 as a team at home and only .211 over their last ten games. The Dodgers don't even have to win this game to win the bet, and there is great value here with taking the plus run line with the best team in the National League. The Cardinals do have Matt Holliday now, but I don't feel that his addition is going to significantly change the outcome of this game. Manny Ramirez took Sunday's game off, so he should be able to play in this game. However, Juan Pierre is a more than able to fill in for him. The Dodgers also have a better road record than St. Louis' home record, and St. Louis' bullpen has been horrendous lately, leaving the Dodgers with an opportunity to get a few late inning runs to get within one run. Take Los Angeles on the +1.5 run line.
        3 UNIT SELECTION

        Detroit at Texas 8:05pm EST
        Selection: UNDER 10 RUNS
Profile: These two teams are still being viewed as high scoring with horrible bullpens. However, both teams bullpens have dramatically improved this year, giving the under play great value. In addition, both pens have pitched even better since the All-Star break. Meanwhile, both starting pitchers are in great form heading into this game. Armando Galarraga has a 2.66 ERA and 1.08 WHIP ratio in his last three starts, and he has pitched well on the road and against Texas. Meanwhile, Tommy Hunter has pitched even better, posting a 1.04 ERA and 1.04 WHIP ratio in his last three starts. Texas' line-up has really struggled to hit the ball lately, and they got shutout on Sunday by lowly Sidney Ponson, despite scoring runs late in the game. Detroit's bats haven't been very good lately either. Look for this game to be low scoring.
***SHOP AROUND TO GET THE TOTAL AT 10, TAKE THE PLAY FOR 1 UNIT IF YOU CAN ONLY FIND IT AT 9.5.***
        2 UNIT SELECTION

        Philadelphia at Arizona 9:40pm EST
        Selection: ARIZONA +108
Profile: This game is a perfect situation to get great value here and go against the public. Philadelphia is red hot right now and is coming off of a very successful home stand. However, this game will be their first one on a seven game road trip. I look for them to be sluggish in this game after becoming too overconfident because of their recent success. Meanwhile, Arizona has quietly been hitting very well since the All-Star break, including a blowout of Pittsburgh on Sunday. The Diamondbacks play very well at home, and the Phillies players haven't faced Arizona starter Jon Garland before. Arizona hits lefties very well, especially at home and recently. They should have no problem hammering the aging Jamie Moyer, who has been inconsistent all year. Better line-ups have been able to him hard. Look for Arizona to get the win.

                PHILLIES
NOTE: List only Moyer as Philadelphia's starting pitcher

Arizona?s Jon Garland (5-9, 4.41 ERA) has not been getting much help from his offense. The right-hander has received three runs or less of support in 11 of his last 12 starts, and has gone 1-7 over that time.Garland can?t entirely blame his teammates for his bad fortune at home this year, as he has a 6.33 ERA in 10 starts at Chase Field.Philadelphia?s 46-year-old lefty Jamie Moyer (9-7, 5.65) continues to amaze, and had won five straight before allowing five runs and eight hits in five innings Wednesday in a 10-5 loss to the Cubs.Garland has been rocked by Philadelphia in two career starts against them, going 0-1 with a 9.90 ERA, but he hasn?t faced Philly since 2004.Moyer, however, is 2-0 with a 3.00 ERA in three career starts in Arizona.Philadelphia is a major league-best 17-4 in July and has won 15 of its last 17. The world champs just got done taking two of three against a talented St. Louis team, so beating the lowly Diamondbacks shouldn?t be too much of a problem today. Go with the Phillies.

Monday ... 15-Dime Angels -1' Runs (no pitchers specifically, take whomever is going) - Cleveland is playing its seventh road game in as many days after spending time in Toronto and Seattle before hitting Southern Cal. The Tribe might be riding a four-game win streak, but continuing that run against the Angels is something tough to ask of a Cleveland team that has the second-worst record in the American League.

I know the Angels come in after getting thumped, 10-1, yesterday by the Twins, but they’re still dangerous team that averaged 7.75 runs over an eight-game win streak prior to the loss. Not going to list either pitcher here guys, as I don’t care who goes, I just believe the Angels had a flat day at the park yesterday and will get back to business tonight against a weary Cleveland team.

400? San Francisco Giants (Lincecum) -1 ½ Runs over Pittsburgh (Maholm)

Take the Giants minus the Run Line at home tonight.

Happy to be back on the bay where they are an NL best 31-15 I love the Giants to blast the Pirates tonight. Leading the way for San Francisco will be Lincecum who has dominated at home this year posting a 5-1 record with an ERA of 2.44.

Meanwhile, for the Pirates they come into tonight’s game with the league worst offense and having not scored a run in their last two games. Mix that in with Maholm’s 5.77 ERA on the road this season and tonight is going to be tough for the Pirates.

Simple, with Lincecum pitching at home where the Giants are next to unbeatable I am expecting a lopsided game on the bay tonight.

All San Francisco -1 ½ runs!

                                Today's Game... 1. 200,000? Diamondbacks

                                1. Diamondbacks- Let's make a couple things clear here: Yes, the Phillies offense is red-hot, coming off back-to-back games where they destroyed the Cardinals in their last series. HOWEVER, do not sleep on this Diamondbacks offense either, as they've caught fire as well, scoring 30 runs on 47 hits in their 4-game series with the Pirates! This contest comes down to which pitcher can slow down the opposing offense, and the answer is clear...

Loving Garland at home in this contest, as he's pitched extremely well in July, tossing 5 straight quality starts, posting a 2.73 ERA in the process! True, his record over that span is just 1-2, but that was due to lack of run support more than anything else. With the Diamondbacks finally starting to produce, I say Garland finally gets rewarded tonight, for what has been a stellar month on the mound. Also of note, critics of this play will argue that he's 0-1 with a 9.90 ERA in 2 career starts against the Phillies, BUT he hasn't faced them since 2004, so you can throw that stat out the window!

Opposing Garland is the Phillies veteran Jamie Moyer... If I can use one word to describe his season, it would be: inconsistent. Forget about the 7 scoreless innings he tossed against Florida, because he ALWAYS beats Florida, what's more important are the pathetic efforts he gave before and after that start, getting roughed up by the Reds sub-par offense, and then once again by the ho-hum Cubs offense in his last one. Arizona's hitters are seeing the ball better than either one of those teams right now, so the soft-throwing lefty could find himself in REAL trouble tonight on the road. Note, Arizona is batting .302 against lefties over their last 10 games!

Finally, there's no question the Phillies are road warriors (29-15 away), but rest-assured, the D-Backs are no pushovers at Chase Field (lately), where they've won 8 of their L11 games, including crushing the Pirates in 3 of their L4 games there. People who know Arizona, know that they produce a hell of a lot better at home, and with all the hoopla surrounding the Phillies right now (Halladay trade and all), this is a prime spot to go against the public and go grab some of that plus money. Don't be fooled by Garland's record over his L5 starts (1-2), because he's pitched well enough to win ALL 5 games! In the end, the Diamondbacks circle the wagons at home, as Garland easily outpitches Moyer in this contest.

Take the Diamondbacks behind Garland over the Phillies and Moyer as your top-rated play of the day.
