SATURDAY'S PLAYS 35 Dime Blue Jays

    Blue Jays at Athletics
BLUE JAYS - The Toronto Blue Jays and Oakland Athletics have hooked up seven times this season, with the Jays taking 4 of those meetings, including 4 of their last 6.

Tonight, the Jays will cash in once again against the A’s.

While Toronto has had success against Oakland this season, it’s really nothing new. Over their last 13 meetings, going back to last season, the Blue Jays are 10-3 against the A’s. In fact, the Jays have won 4 of their last 6 in Oakland.

Scheduled to take the mound for the Blue Jays is Brett Cecil, who pitched a gem against the A’s earlier this season when them met up on May 10 in Oakland. In that game Cecil gave up only five hits and no runs in 8 innings of work leading Toronto to a 5-0 victory.

Consider, too, he’s won 2 of his last 3 starts where he’s allowed only one earned run in 20 innings of work.

Scheduled to be opposite Cecil tonight is A’s starter Trevor Cahill, who’s had a rough go at it lately. He only has one win his last six starts as he’s allowed 26 earned runs in 28 2/3 innings of work.

Cahill will struggle again tonight as the Blue Jays get over once again on Oakland. Take Toronto on the road in this one.

      Re: 8-1-09

Scott Delaney Saturday ... 30-Dime Rays -1' Runs (WITH Niemann over Chen) - Tampa Bay got through last night’s game with ease, after opening up a 3-0, first inning lead. The momentum will spill over to this one, as there’s no reason to believe things won’t go the same for much-better Rays, not to mention with Jeff Niemann toeing the slab against Bruce Chen.

Niemann leads the Rays in wins and comes in after pitching well enough to win against the Blue Jays last Sunday, even though a three-run home run he gave up to Scott Rolen was the difference and resulted in the big right-hander having to take his fifth loss of the season.

He’s been rock solid in being able to stay ahead in counts, which makes the task of hitting him even more difficult. And given the elevated spot from which Niemann delivers, most of his pitches arrive at the plate on a downward path that is unusual to most hitters.

That won’t bode well for the Royals, who are on a 3-11 slide as an underdog and will be playing their sixth straight road game in as many days. And on the heels of throwing washed-up Sidney Ponson, now they’re turning to Chen, who is 0-5 with a 6.39 ERA. He struggles to keep the ball down and is vividly struggling in his comeback from Tommy John surgery. He hasn’t won in the Majors since Oct. 2, 2005 - 52 appearances ago.

With Tampa Bay, the winning runs include 8-3 versus the American League Central, 90-37 at the Trop and 23-6 in this series, including all seven clashes this season. Meanwhile, the Royals stumble into this one on a plethora of losing streaks, including 15-37 off a loss, 2-6 on the road, 7-20 against winning teams and 6-23 after giving up five or more runs their last time out (last night’s final was 8-2).

Lay the run line with Tampa Bay, which will crush the road-weary Royals.

        Jake Timlin
        Saturday's Action
400? Colorado Rockies (Jimenez) -1 ½ Runs over Cincinnati (Bailey)

Go with the Rockies minus the Run Line as they blast the Reds.

Colorado an easy 5-3 winner last night I now expect for the Rockies to blast the Reds even worst tonight. After all with last night’s win it’s the Rockies who have won 8 of the last 9 series meetings, including 5 of the 6 meetings this season.

Now to keep the Rockies series dominance going today will be the right arm of Jimenez and the poor play of the Reds. First for Colorado they turn to Jimenez who has turned in four straight quality starts and who is 1-0 with a 1.50 ERA in two career starts against the Reds.

For Cincinnati, losers of 10 of their last 11 games, they counter with Bailey who is 1-2 with an ERA of 9.39 over his last three starts and who is already a 5-1 loser to the Rockies this season.

Simple, given that the Reds are flat out awful right now I fully expect for the Rockies series dominance to continue as they absolutely blast the Reds tonight for an easy Run Line winner.

        All Colorado -1 ½ Runs!

        100? Texas Rangers

List both Hunter & Hernandez as starting pitchers or this play is void

In bonus action, take the Ranger at home over the Mariners. Yes, Hernandez for the Mariners has been outstanding this year, but I don’t see Felix being good enough to beat a very good Texas team who has won 10 of the last 12 games coming into today’s action. Not when Texas has flat out dominated the Mariners as of late winning 11 if the last 15 meetings, including the first two games of this weekend series. More impressive it’s the Rangers who have 42 of the last 58 series meeting at home. So given that Texas is tossing Hunter who is 3-1 on the year and carries a 0.95 ERA in his last three overall starts I look for the Rangers series dominance to continue tonight at home.

        All Texas!

The Sports Investing Professional - Saturday

Friday Recap - As fortunate as we've been on a few, Friday was total
and complete SHIT. Nothing more that needs to be said. Cubs sucked
and Minnesota's bullpen couldn't get me out......

Todays Play(s) - There are two worthy plays today...First, Colorado's
Jimenez has been very strong lately and Cincy is in a bit of free fall. It
will be warm and the ball should fly out of park in Cincinnati with Colorado
doing most of the damage. Next, the Yankees nearly had the best record in
baseball until they made a visit to "The Cell" I like this matchup....look
for the yanks to get the job done here.

Tampa RL –125 for 4 units
Tampa has dominated KC this season being 7-0 against them this season and being 20-6 in their last 26 home games against them. The Pitching matchup today is Chen (0-5 6.39 ERA) vs. Niemann (9-5 3.81 ERA). The Rays are 13-5 when Niemann starts his games and are averaging wins by 3 runs a game in his starts. Niemann already faced KC at home this year going 9 innings and only giving up 2 hits. Chen in his 5 losses have lost all on RL. KC struggles come in many ways bad pitching, no run support, bad bullpen. On the road they are even worse being 17-30 away and 1-10 in their last 11 games against right handed starters. Tampa 13-3 in Niemann last 16 starts and are really good at home being 90-37 in their last 127 home games which is a great winning percentage. Tampa is 32-17 at home this season and are averaging over 5.5 runs a game. I see a big advantage all around for Tampa today.

Pick: 5 units (Play of the Day) MONEYLINE: Texas Rangers -110

Take the Texas Rangers ML, This pick falls into one of my top MLB systems and we are getting great value tonight with the Rangers at home. The Rangers are 10-2 in their last 12 games and they are 6-1 in their last 7 home games as an underdog. Hernandez struggles in his last outing which was at home against the Toronto Blue Jays where he gave up 11 hits and 7 earned runs over just 5.7 innings and I look for him to struggle against this powerful Rangers line-up tonight. The Rangers have already faced Hernandez three times this season so that is a huge advantage for them at home tonight and Hunter has pitched amazing over his last 3 starts with an ERA of just 0.95 so he shouldn't need much run support tonight. Take the Texas Rangers as my MLB Smash for Saturday night.

                        PICK: over

                        REASON FOR PICK: 4* #922 CLEVELAND/DETROIT Over

The last time that Rick Porcello took the mound we put an Over ticket into play, noting how he had literally hit the wall in his rookie season. We lost that ticket, but it had nothing to do with Porcello’s part of the equation – he allowed five runs in 5.1 innings against the White Sox, with an ominous secondary chart that showed that both his home runs and walks allowed exceeded his strikeouts. Or in this case, strikeout, since he could fan only one of the 24 batters that he faced. Now the 20 year old will likely go over 100 innings for the season tonight (he enters at 97.1), and with his confidence wobbling this is not a situation for a turnaround. And keep in mind that his stuff is not all that dominating, but that early-season opponents lacked scouting reports. In four “second look” games it has been an unsightly 7.45 allowance, and this will be the second go-around this season for a Cleveland offense that has been one of baseball’s best since the break.

We write about Jeremy Sowers often, almost always getting the money, and he simply is who he is – a guy that is crafty enough to fool overly aggressive hitters at the AAA level, but just does not have enough pop in his arm to succeed from major League mounds. In going 1-6/6.42, 4-9/5.95 and now 3-7/5.15 the past three seasons the cement is getting dry for his epitaph, and his struggles to get out right-handers makes him a particularly bad matchup vs. the Tigers. Seven Detroit players have at least five career at-bats against him and six of those seven are hitting .333 or better, with Curtis Granderson, Marcus Thames and Miguel Cabrera all having home runs in their portfolios. There is no particular reason to believe any of that changes in this setting.

Not only is there the potential for a lot of early scoring here; the pace never slows down. With neither Edwin Jackson nor Fausto Carmona working many innings last night the bullpens got a high exposure in the series opener, and note that both closers had long stints, with Fernando Rodney going two full innings at 29 pitches, and Kerry Wood 1.1 and 26. That means that the door stays wide open for the hitters throughout in this one.
