    Re: 8-14-09

4 Unit Play. Take the San Francisco Giants -120 over the New York Mets (Friday @ 7:10pm est). Let's ride what has been working for us which is to take the Sides on ballgames. And, Barry Zito is rolling right now and he presents a good opportunity to cash today. The Giants hit the road and they are 62-52 overall. The Giants are pleased with Zito's second half performance as he is 3-1 with a 2.32 era. Considering that in the first half of the season he was 5-9 with a 5.01era, this is a sharp contrast. The Mets realize that they are not going to the playoffs and they are giving their prized studs a chance to show their stuff this season as they look forward to next season. One such player is Bobby Parnell. The Charleston Southern Grad was only allowed to pitch 65 pitches roughly in his last game and barely lasted more than 2 innings. I just think that Parnell is not likely to have built the stamina to go deep into the ballgame and that works in the favor of the Giants as they see the Mets bullpen earlier. Furthermore, Zito is on an "avenge" tour if you may to defeat the teams and anyone in the second half given his poor start to the first half. San Fran comes off losing 2 of 3 to the Dodgers and I look for them start off this series strong against the Mets. The Giants are 4-0 in Zito's last four starts and the Mets are 0-7 against a lefty at home of late.
    Good luck,
    IC

      Fazzini
Friday's plays 15 Dime -- Angels (Weaver) -1 1/2 runs over ORIOLES (Tillman)
5 Dime -- JETS (minus the points vs. Rams)

      ANGELS
NOTE: List only Weaver as Los Angeles' starting pitcher

The Angels have been crushing the ball for more than a month. They've scored six runs or more in 24 of their last 34 games, and have 10 or more hits in 30 of their last 43 contests.

And they have owned the Orioles, winning five of six meetings this year and eight of the last 11 at Baltimore.

Angels right-hander Jered Weaver (12-3, 3.73) has not been as sharp as he was in the first half of the season, but he has won five straight decisions and recorded 11 strikeouts in each of his last two starts. Weaver allowed two runs and five hits in 7 1/3 innings Saturday in a 3-2 victory over Texas.

In three career outings vs. Baltimore, Weaver is 2-1 with a 1.71 ERA.

Rookie Chris Tillman (0-0, 5.19) gets the start for the Orioles. The 21-year-old right-hander gave up two runs and four hits in 6 2/3 innings Saturday in Toronto in the best of his three major league starts.

Tillman hasn't faced an offense like the one he's facing tonight. Los Angeles is leading the majors with a .289 batting average, and is hitting .314 against the Orioles, who have the third-worst ERA in the majors at 5.02.

Baltimore has lost 10 of its last 13 games, and today's game might be out of hand by the fifth inning. Take the Angels on the run line.

      JETS

The Jets have all the elements in play here for a win in their exhibition opener.

They have a fiery first-year head coach in Rex Ryan, who wants to create a winning environment immediately with his team. They will be playing in front of a fired-up home crowd that is looking for a reason to get excited about the team. And they have two quarterbacks battling for a starting job.

Ryan said both Kellen Clemens and rookie Mark Sanchez will take snaps with the first-string offense tonight, so I expect New York to pile up some points in the first half. Rookie Erik Ainge is expected to play the majority of the second half, and he should be capable enough against St. Louis' second- and third-teamers.

The Rams will likely stick with starting QB Marc Bulger for at least the entire first quarter, then play Kyle Boller, rookie Keith Null and Brock Berlin the rest of the game.

St. Louis has lost 12 of its last 14 exhibition road games, going 4-10 against the spread. New York has gone 3-1 straight-up in four of the last five preseasons. With Ryan getting his first shot at directing his own team, the Jets will cover the spread in this one.

        GARY OLSHAN

ST LOUIS RAMS vs. NY JETS

        PICK: UNDER 33.5

GO UNDER in this matchup between two defensive-minded teams. New Ram mentor Steve Spagnuolo, who was the Giants defensive coordinator before taking over in Saint Louis, is instilling a more physical, aggressive attitutude on the defensive end. And new Jet mentor Rex Ryan is also a fiery defensive-oriented coach. Though there is QB competition in the Big Apple, doubt the Jets rookie QB Sanchez will muster many big plays vs. a rejuvenated Ram defense. Bulger will see extensive action, but coaches say that all four QBs might see action, which mitigates any continuity on the offensive side.

Al DeMarco Friday's Play 5 Dime - Florida (Johnson) - 1 1/2 Runs over Colorado (Hammel)

Tim Lincecum deservingly gets the notoriety, but don't overlook the season Josh Johnson has put together pitching in near anonymity in Florida. An 11-2 record, a 2.92 ERA, and 129 strikeouts is just a start. He's 4-0 with a 3.31 ERA in his last five starts, and at home he's been virtually unbeatable of late, as the Marlins have won each of his last six outings at Land Shark Stadium, a stretch in which the righthander has personally gone 3-0 with a 3.08 ERA.

Johnson is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA in two starts against tonight's opponent, Colorado, including a May 9 victory in which he allowed one run in eight innings.

The Rockies arrive in South Florida on their own hot streak, having won five of six, and their pitcher, Jason Hammel, seeks his third straight victory. However, looks can be deceiving as Hammel allowed 20 hits and six runs over 11.2 innings in winning his last two starts. And prior to that, the righthander was 0-3 with a 5.76 ERA in his previous six outings.

Florida returned home from a three-game road sweep of division-leading Philadelphia and promptly took three of four from visiting Houston. The Marlins have been hot at the plate with at least 10 hits in 10 consecutive games, and they've scored six or more runs in their last six contests, a stretch in which they've gone 5-1 overall while averaging 8.3 runs.

Throw out a three-game sweep at the hands of the visiting Phillies in mid-July, and this Florida team has otherwise won 17 of 21 at home. With its offense in high gear, and a decided advantage in the pitching department with Johnson, laying the 1 1/2 runs makes the Marlins a plus-money proposition tonight.

                              1) Colorado Rockies vs Florida Marlins

                              Pick: Over 8 (5 units)

There is a substantial amount of value of playing the OVER in this one for several reasons. The Rockies and the Marlins have been rolling offensively as of late. Colorado is averaging 7.7 runs per game in its last 6 and Florida is averaging 8.8 in its last 5. This matchup features two right handed pitchers, Jason Hammel (7-6, 4.66) and Josh Johnson (11-2, 2.92). Both teams have had a lot of success versus righties as of late averaging 0.323 and 0.328 in their past 10 contests.

Lay 5 units on the OVER.

                              2) New York Yankees vs Seattle Mariners

                              Pick: NYY -1.5 (4 units)

Yankees will win this one in dominant fashion. This is a matchup featuring two lefties, Andy Pettitte (9-6, 4.14) and Ryan Rowland Smith (2-1, 3.86). The Yanks clearly have the advantage at bat as they are averaging 0.317 versus lefties in their last 10 contests. Yankees have now won 10 of their last 11 and only one of those wins was by one run. They are 12-3 in their last 15 versus Seattle.

Lay 4 units on the Yankees ATS.

                              3) L.A. Angels vs Baltimore Orioles

                              Pick: LAA -1.5 (4 units)

The Angels send Jered Weaver (12-3, 3.67) to the mound. He will square off against rookie Chris Tillman (0-0, 5.19). L.A. will easily dominate because they have a solid pitching and batting advantage. They are averaging 0.316 in their last 10 versus righties, meanwhile Baltimore is averaging 0.255. Additionally the Angels are 7-1 in their last 8 following a day off, 10-2 in their last 12 as a road favourite, 7-0 in Weaver’s last 7 versus a team with a losing record and 4-1 in their last 5 meetings in Baltimore.

Lay 4 units on the Angels ATS.
