For a number of different reasons I feel we're getting excellent value on the home-side: Last week Georgia Tech (2-0, 1-0) moved up one spot in the poll with last Thursday’s 30-27 win over Clemson of the Atlantic Division, and Miami (1-0, 1-0) jumped into the Top 25 following its 38-34 victory over then-No. 18 Florida State on Sept. 7. Although they did pull out the victory last week, Georgia Tech blew a 24-point lead against the Tigers before Scott Blair’s 36-yard field goal with 57 seconds remaining sealed the victory and I expect a similar lapse of concentration in this game and look for the Hurricanes to take advantage. This is a spot that the Yellow Jackets have struggled in over the past three seasons, going a disappointing 2-5 ATS after two or more consecutive straight-up wins and 6-8 ATS when playing with six days or less rest. Miami is now in the same position it was entering last season’s game against Georgia Tech; the Hurricanes jumped into the poll immediately before playing the Yellow Jackets and trailed by as much as 31 in their 41-23 loss in Atlanta. The defeat kept the Hurricanes out of the ACC championship game and I expect them to play with added motivation in this one because of that loss. Dating back to last season Miami is 6-3 SU its last nine overall and 14-6 SU its last 20 at home and I look for it to once again play tough in front of the hometown crowd and to move to a perfect 2-0 ATS this season against conference opponents; play on the HURRICANES! *9*

Miami is playing just its second game of the season and off 10 days rest, while Georgia Tech will be playing its third game in 13 days. Miami QB Harris against Florida State, throwing for a career-high 386 yards and two TDs.

Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets are 1-4 ATS in their last 5 games following a S.U. win.

        Take Miami.

Thursday NIght Play: 1* Georgia Tech (+) over Miami (Fla)

We call these teams almost exactly even in our Power Ratings, with GT actually being a little bit ahead all in all. That alone makes the points worth a nice look here, and when looking at Miami's record as home chalk for Shannon (3-9 ATS) as compared to Ga Tech's 12-4-1 ATS mark as an away dog and Coach Johnson's 14-3 ATS mark as an away dog here and at Navy, and the choice is clear to us. Give us the better team and the points that also happens to have lots of tech edges, as the Yellow Jackets sting here.

Georgia Tech at Miami 8:00pm EST
                      Selection: MIAMI -5.5
Profile: Underdogs in ACC games around this price range have been strong against the spread selections over the last year, but I feel that this game is not going to follow that trend. Miami was blown out by Georgia Tech last season, but Miami was in a tough situational spot in that game. In addition, the Yellow Jackets were very focused for their nationally televised primetime home game, and they took advantage of the inexperienced Miami defense. The Hurricanes and head coach Randy Shannon didn't have much experience against Paul Johnson's triple option offense heading into that game, and they were on a short week of practice. However, they have had extended time to prepare for this game and do not want a repeat performance of last year's blowout. Miami also has a brutal schedule after this game, so they cannot afford to lose this contest. Georgia Tech's win last week against Clemson is somewhat misleading because they used several gadget plays and turnovers to get a win over them. However, the Tigers moved the ball rather easily against them from the 2nd quarter on, which almost resulted in a huge come back win. Georgia Tech's problem this year is their inexperienced defense, evident by Clemson's offensive success with a new quarterback last week. Miami's starting quarterback Jacory Harris looked fully comfortable against Florida State with the new offense that the Hurricanes installed, especially since that game was on the road. I look for Miami to come out and get a dominant home win in primetime.

                        15* Georgia Tech +4.5 at 5DIMES

Georgia Tech is showing solid value against the spread Thursday. The Yellow Jackets' are the proven team in this match-up, going 4-0 SU & 4-0 ATS in their last 4 meetings with Miami. The Jackets also return a lot of experience from last year's 9-4 SU & 8-3 ATS squad. They have 10 offensive starters back and 8 on defense to boot. Leading the way are QB Josh Nesbitt and RB Jonathan Dwyer. The two were a huge part of their 41-23 victory over the Hurricanes in 2008 in which the Jackets rushed for 472 yards. Miami is going to be improved this season, but so is Georgia Tech with so much returning talent. The Hurricanes are 1-10 ATS in their last 11 games as a favorite of 3.5-10.0 and 0-6 ATS in their last 6 games as a home favorite of 3.5-10.0. Miami has not been good in this spot for a long time, while Georgia Tech enters this game on a 6-1 ATS road tear. Take the Yellow Jackets.

                            Play: LA Angels

The Halos are a huge money-making 10-3 as an underdog of +150 or more the past two seasons, with all but one of those games coming on the road, but that’s not even the half of it. The team is a perfect 10-0 since the start of the ’08 season after a game where they had 17 or more hits. They are 12-2 off a game where the bullpen blew a save this season. They are 18-5 off BB losses and 16-6 playing with double revenge. After a loss by two runs or less, they are 41-19 the last two seasons and are 29-12 this year one game removed from scoring eight or more runs. Yes, they draw Josh Beckett, off his first decent showing in a month, but note that Beckett went only five innings (rain-shortened game) in that win over Tampa Bay and owns a weak 7-12 team start record after allowing one earned run or less in his previous start. Beckett has had major problems with the home run ball and as you know the Angels can hit the cover off the ball. Since the All-Star Break, he has an ERA of 4.65, which isn’t inspiring. Also, since beating LA in Game 1 of the 2007 ALDS, Beckett has gone 0-3 with a 7.03 ERA in four starts against them (all Boston losses). The Angels are +$815 vs. righties overall this season. Starter Ervin Santana has been much more solid in the second half than his numbers would seem to indicate as he finally seems to be recovered from his earlier injuries. In his last three starts, his ERA is 3.37. LA Angels are our MLB Revenge Game of the Month.
