Analysis: Guys, we’re getting this one at +15, and I realize it may drop a bit throughout the day. Just to be clear, I wouldn’t play this much lower than 14, or if you did, I’d drop it a little bit less than your standard 2 unit wager.

Okay, that aside… No doubt about it, people will be a little bit nervous to play Fresno after that egg they laid the other night against San Jose St. Fresno was something like 15-60 from the field, and only scored 45 points. There is definitely reason for concern when you get 60 shot attempts and only score 45 points, so I understand the possible concern. That being said, Fresno has scored in the 40’s three times this season, and they’ve come out and won the following game in all three cases. Bad shooting performances happen, but when Fresno is bad, they are really bad; luckily, they bounce back nicely.

These two teams met in January and it was Utah State that was a 2.5 point favorite and ended up winning by 26. That was one of those 25% shooting nights for Fresno, and it was also a game in which Paul George went down with an injury right at the beginning of the game. Utah State has yet to see this team with a healthy Paul George. Aside from the shooting performance, Fresno actually held their own qu…ite well in that game. They got to the free throw line more than the Aggies, they also outrebounded the Aggies. There’s no doubt in my mind that if Utah State didn’t go absolutely nuts from three that night, and Fresno made some jump shots they would have been right in that game. Tonight, Fresno will have that revenge on their side, and they’ll also have a Utah State team that is possibly looking ahead… Utah State has New Mexico State up next, and the winner of that game wins the conference title. USU holds a one game lead on NMSU, but NMSU already beat them once this year, so regardless of the outcome against Fresno, USU needs that game. What will be their motivation tonight? They are playing at home, knowing that the game that really means everything is the next one, not the one tonight. While on the other side we have a Fresno team looking to bounce back off a terrible performance AND gain revenge as well.

From a matchup standpoint, I really like the way Fresno is able to contend with Tai Wesley. Sly Seay is a big body, as is Greg Smith. These two guys did a fine job limiting Wesley in that first matchup, and I’d expect them to do that again. Talent wise, Fresno can contend, and beat Utah State on any given night. It’s just a matter of inconsistency if you’re Fresno. The Bulldogs have the size, they’ve got the shooters (Paul George, Mychal Ladd, Steven Shepp), they just need to put that together into a decent shooting night. Like I said, this is a team that bounces back very nicely, so I don’t expect this team to stay down.

I love the fact that we’re probably getting a few extra points on the top because of how poorly Fresno played over the weekend. I also love the fact that Utah State has their Game of the Year coming up next. And aside from that, there is no reason Fresno can’t hold down Tai Wesley, and there is no reason they can compete to win this game outright if they’re making some jumpers at around a 45% clip. 15 points is simply too much guys. We’re getting at least 5 extra points because of the way Utah State beat Fresno earlier in the year (without Paul George playing for Fresno), and because of Fresno’s recent lack of success. Take Fresno at a low market value and let’s expect them to play to their potential.
