    The Duke's Sports

Southern Mississippi (+6) for 2 Units

Southern Miss is a dangerous dog here against a team that swept them in the season series. Both of the games were highly competitive. SM is coming off a solid win over Tulane in the CUSA 1st Round yesterday the Blazers earned a bye. However, SM has good depth and, as we mentioned many a time before, are well coached for tournament play by Eustachy. SM is 4-0 ATS on a neutral floor and 6-1 ATS vs a team with a winning % above .600. On the other hand, the Blazers are just 1-6 ATS as a neutral favorite and 0-4 ATS on Thursdays. Despite Pelham's ankle problem, we'll look for SM to deliver.

      DAVE MALINSKY

      4* NC STATE + 7.5 over CLEMSON

Like most pressing teams, there is a major home/away gap in Clemson performances – take away the energy that a home crowd brings to those Tiger traps, and they become a much different team. But it is particularly pronounced given the limitations of Oliver Purnell’s squad this season, with an ugly 2-6 SU and 1-7 ATS tally in A.C.C. games away from Littlejohn Coliseum. When they are not getting turnovers for easy baskets in the open court their offense simply bogs down, with little consistency outside of the presence of Trevor Booker down low. And when you do not shoot the ball well enough to protect your big guy from being double-teamed when he gets his touches (they shot an anemic 30.6 percent from 3-point range in conference play), winning games is hard enough, much less getting anything by a margin.

Clemson may bring just enough to win tonight, but that is all. The Tigers are allergic to half-court basketball, as best exhibited by their 11-23-1 ATS tally the last three seasons in games in which neither they nor their opponents scored more than 75 points, and that is the only way that Sidney Lowe will allow this one to be played. N. C. State had 12 of its 16 A.C.C. games fall under that “Double 75” umbrella, and whereas many teams try to avoid having to rely on their half-court sets, the Wolfpack actually want to play that kind of game. In Tracy Smith they have one of the most under-rated players in the nation (15.8 ppg and 7.1 rebounds in A.C.C. play), and with Javier Gonzalez finding his stroke down the stretch (37.3 percent from 3-point range in conference games), and Scott Wood also dangerous from distance (36.5 percent triples) there is the ability to play inside-out to free Smith up.

      N. C. State won the battle of the boards (30-25), and only committed 11 turnovers vs. the Clemson presses in the first go-round, but fell short 73-70 in Raleigh because the shooting was an icy 38.9 percent, compared to 49.1 for the Tigers. For the outcome to be that close, with the shooting gap so wide, speaks volumes about how the floor game was played out. We expect a similar flow here, as the Wolfpack frustrate the favorite by playing this at a slow pace, and they are in the hunt to win outright to the final possessions. STU

            Indian Cowboy
4 Unit Play. Take Northwestern -8.5 over Indiana (Thursday @ 5pm est).

6-0 Run over the last 3 Days.

            Wednesday: 2-0
4* CBB: Iowa State +8 over Texas (W)
4* NBA: New Jersey Nets +11.5 over Dallas (W)

            Tuesday: 2-0
4* CBB: UMass +9 over Charlotte: 59-56: Outright Winner! (W)
4* NBA: Milwaukee Bucks -1.5 over Boston Celtics (W)

            Monday 2-0
            4* CBB: Fairfield +8 over Siena (W)
4* NBA: New Jersey Nets +9.5 over Grizzlies (W)

I think Northwestern might just come out and kill Indiana today. This team lost to Indiana recently on the road in overtime by a score of 80-88. Without a doubt, this team is irritated out of his mind for losing to this team in Indiana in overtime. Northwestern without a doubt is clearly the better team and on neutral footing, their coach will have their tails for not playing up to their potential on the road. Plus, I have no doubt that Indiana will not get their friendly calls that they did at home on the road today. Northwestern has a great shot at making the dance for the first time in their 100 year history and this is finally their opportunity with a decent team this year. This team has done decent as they have gone 19-12 overall, beat Minnesota, Michigan, Illinois, Stanford, NC State and Notre Dame - not to mention they typically bounce back well from a loss as well. This team needs this win to get to the Dance as a win here and a good showing in the Big10 tourney I think will punch their ticket. Hoosiers are 3-14 ATS following a straight up win and 0-4 ATS as a big underdog whereas Northwestern is 7-0 ATS following a straight up loss.

4 Unit Play. #799. Take Under 194 between the Atlanta Hawks vs. Washington Wizards (Thursday @ 7pm est). If you are wondering why the line is a bit low, and the line is going down despite the public on the over by a 2:1 margin, there is good reason. The Hawks have lost back to back games. They will look to step up their defensive effort today. On top of that, the new look Wizards have been playing more and more unders lately. Its always interesting when a team makes several new trades to see how it affects their total. This is what takes the most to settle down as it relates to oddsmaking. Washington is an under team with their new squad as they have played five straight unders and eight of ten unders. Tack that on the fact they face a Hawks team that is a defensive team by nature, I like the under between both of these squads today. Bear in mind that the Under is 4-1 for the Hawks when they come off two days rest, the Under is 5-1 for the Wizards over their last six games and the Under is 7-0 for the Wiz as a home underdog of late.

                      double-dime bet 709 NotreDame 2.0 (-110) Bodog vs 710 Pittsburgh
                      Analysis:

                      PLAY: NOTRE DAME
                      RATING: DOUBLE DIME PLAY

This line tells me all I need to know as Pitt as only a 2 point favorite against a Notre Dame that had to play last night that looks way to easy. Pitt is 8-1 last 9 with the lone loss to Notre Dame at Notre Dame. Looks way too easy for Pitt revenge. Stay with the the team that played yesterday as it's an advantage as Pitt is good but they are still a young team that will have some jitters in their opening game where as Notre Dame already played and Won. Notre Dame in an Upset!!

Take NOTRE DAME as MARCO'S 5* KEY RELEASE

                            Louisiana Tech -4.5

Once upon a time, La Tech stood at 17-2 SU and even beat conference champ Utah State by 22. The Bulldogs would go onto to win their next three games to extend a season-long win streak to 10 games, but then things fell apart a bit down the stretch with losses in seven of the final 12 games. So what happened? Well, injuries were the main culprit with leading scorer Kyle Gibson (19.1 PPG), a senior, missing four games due to an ankle injury. He returned (briefly) in the finale, so he should be "good to go" here as his team looks to avenge a 66-59 loss to Fresno State that occured last Thursday. The Bulldogs shot only 35% in that game and had only 16 attempts from the free throw line (where they shot 81%). The season's first meeting, which occured back when La Tech was hot, saw the Bulldogs win by eight. Remember we did cash this team on BracketBuster weekend when they went to Northeastern and won outright, 70-67, as 8.5-point underdogs. Over the last two seasons, they are 17-5 ATS revenging a road loss. Let's also keep this in mind. Before being the Bulldogs at home, Fresno State had lost back to back road games to San Jose State and Utah State by scores of 72-45 and 76-39! Take Louisiana Tech.

                                Atlanta/Washington Under 194.5

Atlanta can play defense if they want. Long & athletic, with an ability to switch 1-5, they are the envy of the league, but team has been very inconsistent this season. Head coach, Mike Woodson has challenged his troops to step up their D efforts for 48 minutes, in preparation for the playoffs. On the offensive side of the ball, the Hawks can get very stagnant at times, failing to move the ball, playing too much one-on-one basketball on the wings?? Washington are having all kinds of offensive problems. Team have played Under the total in 5 straight games & 6 of L8 overall, and are Under this total in 6 of their L7 games. Wizards only averaging 84.2 ppg their L5 games. In addition, Washington 20-6 Under the total their L26 games overall & 18-5 Under the number their L23 as an underdog. Last three meetings have gone under this total as well. Take the Under.
