Ian Kennedy had nice stuff in his Arizona debut, and he should be tough his first time through the National League. Meanwhile, Clayton Kershaw continues to struggle for LA.

This seems like an inflated line for the Los Angeles Dodgers home opener, as Ian Kennedy of the Arizona Diamondback looked better than the more highly regarded Clayton Kershaw in their respective first starts, and Arizona has had the better bullpen thus far.

Kennedy allowed three runs on six hits in his first start vs. the San Diego Padres with an impressive eight strikeouts in five innings with no walks. He seems like the type of pitcher that will be difficult to hit his first time through the National League after coming up as a highly regarded prospect with the Yankees, and should he be in need of relief late, he has the support of a Diamondbacks bullpen that has posted a 3.63 ERA and a great 0.92 WHIP in 17.1 innings.

Kershaw was supposed to be the future ace of the Dodgers staff, but he appeared to wear down in the second half of last season, and even more distressing is that he did not look sharp in his first start this season even after resting all winter. Kershaw was only charged with three runs in 4.2 innings vs. the Pirates, but he was pitching with runners on base all game, allowing five hits and issuing six walks.

Also, after pitching well in his first career start vs. the Diamondbacks two years ago, Arizona has reached Kershaw for seven earned runs in only 8.1 innings in his last two starts against them, and we saw nothing when Kershaw started in Pittsburgh last Wednesday to indicate that he has gotten over the hump. Also, unlike the D-Backs, the LA bullpen has been a gas can with a 5.68 ERA and 1.47 WHIP in 19 innings.

All things considered, this seems like great value for Arizona, especially since Kershaw does not usually pitch deep into games because of all his walks, meaning that the struggling Dodger bullpen should be called on early.

San Francisco is a big favorite at home against Pittsburgh tonight, and while we’ll take a pass on the side play, we do recommend a play on the Under. The Giants send Matt Cain to the mound, and he absolutely dominated the Pirates last season. In two starts, he allowed just one run over 16 innings, and threw a complete game shutout in his most recent start. And we’re not convinced the San Francisco offense will put up big numbers against Maholm, who has allowed 5 earned runs against the Giants over his last 20 innings (three starts).
