It was one year ago when Cleveland’s Jake Westbrook could not pitch at all due to major elbow problems. It was back in 2008 the last time he “went the distance” in an assignment and it is becoming obvious that Westbrook is finally starting to feel better. The last time Westbrook faced Cincinnati in this interleague series (2006) resulted in a very LOW scoring 3-0 contest. The last time Reds veteran Bronson Arroyo tackled the Indians lineup, the final score (3-1) was also extremely low. Arroyo can be streaky but in his most recent 4 trips to the mound his numbers (3-1, 2.73 ERA) have been excellent. While Arroyo has allowed only 3 runs in the past 16 innings of work, Westbrook is off an outing where he not only allowed just ONE run to cross the plate, he racked up 8 different STRIKEOUT victims. The Indians could use another gem from Westbrook considering that their offense (.199 batting average last four games) is reeling from INJURY as both Asdrubal Cabrera and Grady Sizemore are on the disabled list. Yesterday the top pair of batters in the Cleveland order were actually playing in the minor leagues just one week earlier. Turning to the database here is a 70-PERCENT SYSTEM (80-34 past five years with a posted total between 8’-and-10 runs) which plays teams like Cincinnati after a game where the bullpen was rocked for 6+ earned runs UNDER the total if the contest is being played in the month of MAY. What that 70% system tells us is that yesterday’s amazing collapse where Cincinnati blew a 6-run lead in the final inning makes UNDER the total very lucrative. In tonight’s price range Bronson Arroyo the past couple of years is an amazing 10-1 UNDER the total.

The Astros’ offense has been missing all season long as they have no depth in the lineup, and have become a classic UNDER team. That becomes extremely valuable when they face top pitching. Tampa Bay has become a signature UNDER team with Garza on the hill after his team put up 5+ in their last game. Garza, in his last 39 starts in this situation, has pitched to the UNDER to a 27-11-1 mark. This one stays UNDER the total.

Both teams are starting quality pitchers tonight, but Brad Penny has been superb in his home starts this year and goes against an Angels team that is on the decline and not very good at all away from home. Look for the Cardinals to get a lead early and the bullpen to close out the Angels. Take St. Louis
