    NEWS AND NOTES
GAME OF THE DAY: Flyers at Blackhawks
    By Nick Parsons

Old-time hockey turned into wide-open ice in the first game of the Stanley Cup finals when the Blackhawks edged Philadelphia 6-5. The Blackhawks try to make it 2-0 in the series tonight.

    Game 1 recap

Overall there were five lead changes and either out of character or a sign of the respect to Chicago's power play, the Flyers did not have a penalty in Game 1.

At times Saturday's opener looked like an All-Star game with plenty of goals, no fights and few penalties.

Both teams expect things to get a little tighter Monday night. The 11 goals was the most in a finals game since 1992 and Chicago got the winner from Thomas Kopecky eight minutes into the final period.

    Leighton's issues

Flyers goalie Michael Leighton was pulled in second period after allowing five goals on just 20 shots. Is he wearing down?

Leighton was one of the biggest reasons the Flyers were able to pull the remarkable comeback against the Bruins when they were down 3-0 in games and 3-0 on the scoreboard in Game 7.

Leighton was 6-1 in the playoffs entering Saturday's game. He took over for Brian Boucher to change the momentum in the second round and entered Game 1 with a 1.45 goals against average in the playoffs.

He is streaky winning at least four starts in a row three times during the regular season when he went 17-9-2 and he wants to start Game 2.

Chicago's Antii Niemi made 27 saves on 32 shots to get the win, nothing to write home about. He allowed late goals in both the first and second periods.

    History in the making

Chicago hasn't won the Cup since 1961 (49 years) when Stan Mikita was carrying the way. The Flyers last won in 1975 when Dave Schultz and the Broad Street Bullies policed the ice. They last made the finals in 1997.

    No chants of defense

Flyers coach Peter Laviolette blamed the defense for the Game 1 loss. Chicago scored three goals on five shots in one span. And, on Kris Versteeg's goal that tied the game at 4-4, there were four Flyers in front of Leighton but no one bothered to lay a finger on him as he gathered up a rebound and flipped in the net. That was woeful.

    X-factor

There is a reason Marian Hossa has reached the Cup finals the past two seasons. He can do it all. While Hossa hasn't scored much lately he has been superb defensively and lends a veteran presence on the ice.

And don't forget that Hossa plays alongside Troy Brouwer who was named the No. 1 star in Saturday's game. Hossa had two assists and finished +2 for the night.

    Injury report

Andrew Ladd, the Chicago winger missed Game 1 with a shoulder injury and remains questionable. He had 17 goals during the regular season.

    Trends

The numbers are good for both these teams. That's why they're in the finals.

The Blackhawks are 42-16 as home favorites and 14-3 in their last 17 games with one day's rest.

Philadelphia has won eight of its last 10 games and they are 7-1 with one day's rest.

The Flyers are 23-52 as a road underdog against a team with over .600 winning percentage.

The home team has won the last four in this meeting.

The Flyers have gone under the number 5-0-2 in their last seven games after giving up at least five goals in their previous game.

      MLB NEWS AND NOTES
Monday's Streaking And Slumping Starting Pitchers
      By Covers Staff

      Streaking

      Ervin Santana (4-3, 3.65) L.A. Angels
Ervin Santana was cranking out more hits than rock legend Carlos Santana until his last three starts, going 3-0 and allowing only five earned runs during that span.

Santana has a 2.05 ERA and 1.14 WHIP in his last three starts, striking out 22 in those 22 innings of work, including a 10-K, complete-game performance in his four-hitter against the Blue Jays in his last outing.

"I'm not going to throw a complete game all the time," Santana said after the 8-3 win, "but I just try to go as far as I can for as long as I can."

It's a stark contrast to his 1-3 start to the season, when he gave up 23 earned runs over his first seven starts. Like the more musically inclined Santana, Ervin also has found his groove.

Ubaldo Jimenez (9-1, 0.88) Colorado Rockies
After Jimenez's hot start to the season, it's hard to imagine him getting any hotter. Yet that's exactly what he'd done over his last three outings.
After starting the season 6-1 with an 0.99 ERA, including his first career no-hitter, Jimenez has actually lowered his ERA and WHIP over his past three starts with identical 0.78 marks during that span.

"It's not easy to have an ERA like that young man has this late into the season," Rockies manager Jim Tracy said of Jimienez. "I've heard the term 'microscopic' used and I think it applies."

Jimenez carries a 16 1/3-inning scoreless streak into Monday's highly anticipated matchup with San Francisco's Tim Lincecum, but it's tough for anyone to beat a guy giving up less than one run per game.

      Slumping

Matt Garza (5-3, 2.97) Tampa Bay Rays
After getting off to 5-1 start in his first six outings, Garza hasn't won since May 5, going 0-2 over his last four starts and allowing 13 earned runs during that stretch.

Garza's last start was his shortest and worst of the season, allowing six earned runs (all on home runs) and walking five batters in an 11-3 loss to the Red Sox.

While it's possible Garza was protected behind the Rays' strong hitting earlier in the season, he's been exposed a bit now that the offense has come down to earth.

"It's such a cyclical thing, I think," Rays manager Joe Maddon said. "You're either hot in those moments or (you're not), and we had been hot and now we're not."

Garza may need all the support he can get today against the power-hitting Jays.

Francisco Liriano (4-3, 3.17) Minnesota Twins
It's only May and it's already been a tale of two seasons for Liriano. After going 4-0 through his first five starts, Liriano is 0-3 in his last four outings.

Maybe he should blame it on the rain. After sailing through his first five trips to the mound, Liriano's sixth start was pushed back one day against the Baltimore Orioles and he hasn't been the same ever since.

Liriano has allowed 15 earned runs over that stretch after giving up just six in his first five outings. His ERA has almost tripled since the weather threw off his rhythm. But the veteran still has it in him to bounce back.

"With Frankie on the mound you know you're going to get a chance to win," said Twins manager Rod Gardenhire.

True, just not as true as it was one month ago.

          GC- Monday MLB Play

On Memorial day Monday the Free MLB Play is on the Tamp Bay Rays. Game 923 at 7;10 eastern. The Rays have better numbers this season than Toronto. Tampa Bay is 19-5 on the road, averaging 6 runs per game and have an excellent 2.45 road bullpen ERA. The Blue Jays have not hit in division play. They are hitting a paltry .227. In the pitching match up Tampa has M. Garza going tonight. Garza has a 2.04 road era and a 2.17 career 2.17 era vs the Jays. Toronto counters with Morrow tonight. Morrow has a 4.70 home era and has been lit up of late with a 6.60 era. He has lost both starts he has made vs Tampa Bay as well. Look for Tampa to get game 1 tonight. On Memorial Day Monday I have 2 Big 5* MLB plays. For the Free play take Tampa Bay. GC

              Monday's winner...
300-Unit Baseball Smart Play - SAN DIEGO PADRES (play only with Correia as listed pitcher for Padres)

The Mets are traveling across the country after beating the Brewers on Sunday and now they have to face the red-hot Padres and right-hander Kevin Correia, who loves pitching at Petco Park in San Diego.

I’ll pay the price and play San Diego in this one as Correia has a 2.83 ERA at home and has allowed more than three runs just once at home this season. On Thursday, he blanked the Cardinals for six innings as San Diego scored the extra-inning 2-1 victory.

Against the Mets, Correia delivered a gem last August, allowing just two runs (none earned) on seven hits over six innings of a 6-2 victory.
Hisanori Takahashi (4-1, 2.13 ERA) makes just his third career start tonight and he’s had identical six-inning stints in his last two, allowing no runs and five hits over six innings as the Mets beat the Phillies 5-0 but lost to the Yankees 2-1.
San Diego took five of seven against the Mets last season, including four of the last five, and they’ve won eight of the last nine played on the West Coast. The Padres are 8-3 when Correia gets four days off and 5-0 when he faces N.L. West teams.

The Mets are just 3-8 on Monday, 14-37 on the road and 4-10 against right-handed starters.

I’m paying the price to play the home team as they roll tonight.

                MONDAY'S WINNER
30 DIME: Rockies-Giants UNDER the total.

NOTE: As with all over/under plays, pitchers are automatically specified. So Ubaldo Jimenez (Colorado) and Tim Lincecum (San Francisco) must start this game or this play is null and void!

                Rockies-Giants UNDER

BREAKDOWN: Ubaldo Jimenez vs. Tim Lincecum. Need I say more? Seriously, these are two of the five best pitchers in all of baseball, both capable of throwing a no-hitter anytime they take the mound (something Jimenez has already done this year). Jimenez is 9-1 with a 0.88 ERA (he’s allowed just seven runs in 71 1/3 innings) and 5-1 with a 0.62 ERA in six road starts (three runs allowed in 43 1/3 innings). With the exception of one start (six earned runs allowed in 2 2/3 innings last September), Jimenez has dominated the Giants in his career (16 earned runs allowed in nine starts covering 59 1/3 innings for a 2.43 ERA). … As for Lincecum, no question he’s struggled with his control lately (10 walks in his last two starts, leading to 11 runs allowed in 9 2/3 innings). But this is still the two-time reigning N.L. Cy Young winner who delivered eight consecutive quality starters to begin 2010 (giving up two runs or fewer in seven of those contests). I’m fully confident he’ll fix his mechanical flaw. And I’m fully convinced he’ll continue his success versus the Rockies (last year in three starts against Colorado, Lincecum gave up four runs and 13 hits in 22 innings for a 1.64 ERA with 26 strikeouts in those 22 innings).

A couple of more points to make: This is a late-afternoon start in San Francisco, meaning shadows will come into play, making Lincecum (1.78 ERA in five day games) and Jimenez (1.57 ERA in five day games) even tougher – and making life even more miserable for the hitters. Speaking of offense, the Rockies have been awful against right-handed pitching on the road (.227 average), while the Giants haven’t been much better against righties (.258 average overall, .250 at home). … Finally, these teams played a three-game series from April 30-May 2 in San Francisco. Neither Jimenez nor Lincecum pitched in the series, yet all three games stayed under the total with scores of 5-2, 6-1 and 4-1. That makes the under 18-7-1 in the last 26 meetings in San Francisco. Also, the under is 22-9-1 in Jimenez’s last 32 starts overall, including 4-1 in his last five on the road, and 7-3 in his 10 career starts against the Giants, while the under is 14-5-2 in San Francisco’s last 21 home games. …This one has 1-0 or 2-1 final written all over it!
