It would be easy to believe that the Yankees will pound Willis here, but the NY offense is soft after a big win. NY is 2-15 OU as a favorite of more than 130 when the OU line is more than 9 and they are off a five-plus run win. NY is 0-9 OU their last nine in this spot, including 0-4 OU this season.

In addition, the Yanks are 0-9-1 OU as a 130+ favorite in the last game of a series when they are off a win in which they never trailed.

As for the D-Backs, we find that they are 1-14 OU as a home dog when seeking immediate revenge for a five-plus run loss as a dog of more than 110. The lone over went over in extra innings.

In Willis’ last two home starts with Arizona he allowed a total of two runs. let’s go UNDER this jacked-up line.

Ely & Pineiro MUST START

Can the Dodgers beat the Angels? I'm beginning to have my doubts. Last night's 6-3 Angels win marked their fourth win in as many tries against Joe Torre's boys this season. Tonight's pitching matchup looks like the Halos will make it five straight.

John Ely is definitely on a downward swing. Ely owns a plump 9.20 ERA and 2.11 WHIP in his last three starts; one of which was against these Angels. Ely has been getting shelled (allowed 6 homers in his last 3 starts, spanning 14.2 innings) and he has also walked 6 batters in his last 9.2 innings of work. The Angels reached Ely for 4 runs in 5 innings just 11 days ago. The Angels should be able to at least duplicate that now that they've faced him recently.

While Ely is struggling, Joel Pineiro has hit his stride. Pineiro owns a 2.35 ERA and 0.96 WHIP in his last 3 starts, and a 2.40 ERA and 1.03 WHIP at home this season. Pineiro is 3-0 with a 2.67 ERA in four career starts against the Dodgers after throwing a five-hitter with seven strikeouts in a 10-1 victory June 11th.

The Dodgers are struggling, losers of five straight games. Much of that can be contributed to their lack of success at the plate. In those last five losses, the Dodgers are batting an anemic .189 and scoring a pitiful 2 runs per game against righties. Pineiro's sinker should give them fits again tonight. And the normally reliable Dodgers bullpen owns a 1.46 WHIP in their last 5 games, allowing opponents to bat .283 against them.

Bottom line: Pineiro and the Angels are hot; Ely and the Dodgers are not. The Dodgers have a losing streak overall and against the Angels. I'm not about to bet against those streaks tonight. Take Angels/Pineiro over Dodgers/Ely.

Analysis: I felt very strongly that the Dodgers would snap their Interleague skid yesterday, but if that day wasn't the opportunity, this one most certainly isn't, either.


The pitching edge flops back over to the Angels, as Joel Pineiro has had wonderful success against the Do…dgers throughout his career, including another solid performance against them just about 10 days ago. Pineiro has been hot, too, or as hot as pitchers can be. He's given up just 2 runs over his last 17 innings each on a solo home run. Pineiro has allowed just 8 hits in those 17 innings, he's walked only 2, and struck out 12. And truthfully, I don't believe the market has taken notice, just yet. Prior to those 2 starts, Pineiro was pretty awful for 4 straight outings, and we're just now getting to that point where the price is starting to climb back up, but isn't quite where it should be, yet.


After another win today, you can expect Pineiro's price tag to get back to a true number, but for one more start, we're getting a little edge. That little edge comes from the competition, the Los Angeles Dodgers, who remain a decidedly "public" team despite losing 5 games in a row, and a few of them in heartbreaking fashion. The Dodgers had a 3-0 lead last night, and managed to watch that one slip away as the Interleague slump continues.


On the hill for LA is John Ely, who has, more or less, regressed to where he should be, and I'd expect a start out of Ely a little less ugly than his last one, but still not too pretty. He's a strike thrower, and some of those balls that landed on the warning track when he was rolling are now finding their way out of the yard. Ely should give up a few runs to the Halos, who absolutely hammer "finesse" pitchers, and while I believe Ely gives a better effort, he's still going to depart with his team behind.


Look for Ely to go 6 innings and give up 3-4 runs. Look for Pineiro to give up 2 tallies in 7 innings, and look for the Angels to take the second game of this set by the final score of 5-3 or 5-4, as the Dodgers try to rally late and come up short.

Note: I am not going to spend much time on this play because it is simply cut and dry and we are getting the team we want at a good price. Joel Pineiro is 3-0 with a 2.67 ERA in four career starts against the Dodgers after throwing a five-hitter with seven strikeouts in a 10-1 victory June 11. He carried that success into his next outing last Wednesday, yielding one run and three hits in eight innings of a 5-1 win over Milwaukee. Pineiro has posted a 2.35 ERA while winning three consecutive starts. Needless to say, he is on his ga‚me and so are the Angels right now. Much of that recent success has been verses these Dodgers with a 4-0 Mark this year so far. LA is struggling as their Bullpen has reverted back to earlier in the season when they were Piss Poor. Even with Hoss Kershaw on the mound the Dodgers could not seal a victory and tonight send young Ely to the mound could be Ugly. After starting well, he is not throwing well now and a Tired Arm is likely the cause. His K Numbers are Way down, His WHIP is Way Up, and his Innings/Hits Ratio is as bad as it gets. He has seen 5 Dingers go over the board his last 3 and the last time I checked, LAA can hit some of those. I am going to stop here because there is not much more I can say about this No-Brainer Opp.
