Analysis:
Jackson has a 1.71ERA in his last 4 road starts. He has 4 quality outings in his last 5 appearances and is coming off a 7.2IP, 3ER, 9H performance v Det. He gets to face a Rays offense that will be without Carl Crawford and features a group of hitters that are struggling to find their groove. Aybar (.239), Upton (.231), Bartlett (.228), Navarro (.210), and Pena (.201) are among the Rays regulars who† Jackson gets to face today. Niemann has had a qulaity start in 11 of 14 outings in 2010. He is holding opponents to a .217BA and has a 1.07WHIP. (3rd in AL). The Dbacks have lost 15 of 16 road games, but the Rays have dropped 6 of 8 overall, as well. So, seems like a pretty fair fight based on the above. But let’s go to the real tale of the tape, beyond what the average person is seeing. Jackson has a 4.07FIP and 4.08xFIP w a .320BABIP, suggesting he’s better than his fielding-independent marks indicate. Against a Rays lineup that can’t seem to get untracked, that will be pronounced in this ballgame. Niemann has a 4.46FIP and 4.38xFIP, numbers that aren’t as good as Jackson’s, while facing an always dangerous Dbacks lineup. But, the kicker is this. Niemann’s BABIP is .233, tied for the 2nd “luckiest” mark in all of baseball. Were this line Arizona +135, I might not have pulled the trigger. But at a staggering +185, this line represents roughly 5 Dimes of embedded value. We absolutely have to take the flier on Arizona.

Yes, Pittsburgh IS 2-10 in their last twelve games, but (and this is key) SO IS OAKLAND! As such, cannot justify a line this high, and as such the dog is the play, especially since I really liked the way Lincoln pitched in his last game. He put in a quality start (going six innings and allowing three runs) but more importantly looked much more comfortable in that start than he did in his first two starts. Good value play on the Pirates here.
