        Streaking and Slumping Pitchers

        Streakers

Stephen Strasburg (2-1, 1.78) Washington Nationals

The rookie sensation suffered his first loss of the season in his last outing, a 1-0 defeat to the Kansas City Royals on Wednesday, and he's still streaking.

Almost all his other numbers improved, lowering his ERA from 1.86 to 1.78 and raising his strikeout totals from 32 to 41 with no walks on the evening.

"His fastball, his slider, his changeup - every pitch is unbelievable," Royals outfielder Jose Guillen, a former National, said of Strasburg. "He has everything. He pitched great. He just made a few mistakes."

Don't expect Strasburg to repeat them today.

Mark Buehrle (6-6, 4.60) Chicago White Sox

After a six-week slump, Buehrle is back on track after rattling off three straight victories.

Buehrle has allowed only four earned runs in last three outings while tallying 20 innings of work. He allowed 12 earned runs in his two previous starts while lasting only 8 1/3 innings.

The difference, Buehrle said, has been his ability to get himself out of trouble. Of course, he's also getting a lot more help now with the White Sox on a run.

"Early on in the season, I would get in jams like that and not get out of them. It's like our season has turned around," Buerhle said. " ...We just need to try to stay on this roll. Everybody is confident right now."

        Slumping

Paul Maholm (4-6, 4.24) Pittsburgh Pirates

Maholm hasn't won since the first week of June, going 0-2 in his three starts since. His last outing was his most disastrous of the season.

The lefty was pulled after one inning, allowing seven hits and five earned runs in a 13-3 loss to the Texas Rangers. But to his credit, he owned up to it.

"Pretty much you just chalk it up to, 'I sucked.' There's no better way to say it," Maholm said. "It wasn't a good day. But also, I understand it's part of the game, and I'm going to be ready in five days."

Maholm is 9-2 in his career against the Cubs, but bet on the scuttling Pirates at your own risk.

Chad Billingsley (6-4, 4.34) Los Angeles Dodgers

Yes, Billingsley is coming off the 15-day DL, but he can't shake the slumper rap that easily. Whether it was the groin or not, he was struggling on the mound before he limped off of it.

In his last two starts, the righty allowed 16 hits and 10 earned runs in 11.2 innings. That's more runs than he had given up in his previous five games or 33 innings.

"It's [a groin injury], the one you can predict the least, because you can warm up, you can have a simulated game, but until you get on the mound and push off in a regular game, you're never sure," Dodgers manager Joe Torre said.

Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

New York Mets at Florida Marlins (100, 9)

The Marlins have some bad mojo after firing manager Fredi Gonzalez last week. The Fish have lost four straight since the blindsided canning.

Even talented young shortstop Hanley Ramirez, who was benched by Gonzalez last month and got into a war of words with the ex-skipper, was sad to see him go.

"Everybody will miss him," Ramirez said Sunday. "But at the same time, you've got to forget and move forward."

But not without taking a few steps backward, which the Marlins have been doing. They scored just three runs in their weekend series with the Padres and now face an undefeated R.A. Dickey today.

The change of scenery may do them good in the getaway to Puerto Rico against the Mets, but the team turmoil will make the trip with them.

          Pick: Mets

Philadelphia Phillies at Cincinnati Reds (-140, 9.5)

The Phillies' long offensive nightmare finally appears to be over after scoring 75 runs in their last 11 games and going 8-3 over that stretch.

That relative offensive explosion comes after a woeful 25-game span when they scored just 63 runs and batted .217 as a team.

The hot streak is spread out among several teammates, but Ryan Howard appears to be the key. He has homered in five games during the 11-game run. The Phillies are 11-3 when he goes deep this season.

"Overall, we've been playing pretty well the last couple series," Howard said. "We're just trying to keep it going."

The Reds also have picked up their offense since going batless in Seattle last weekend. They have won five of their last six and scored 32 runs during that span.

Look for the firepower to continue for both teams today with the wind blowing out at the Great American Ballpark.

          Pick: Over

              Re: 6-28-10- GC MLB Play

On Monday the free MLB play is on the under in the Washington at Atlanta game. Rotation numbers 905/906 at 7:10 eastern. While the posted total is somewhat low here, its is warranted. This game sets up to be a classic pitching duel with Washington Rookie phenom S. Strasburg vs Atlanta righty T. Hudson. Both pitchers have been dominant of late. Strasburg has bee fantastic in his first 4 starts in the big leagues with a 1.78 era, allowing just 5 runs in 25 innings. He has also domianted hitters, and has had high strikeout totals. T. Hudson has been superb as well with a 1.87 home era, and he has allowed just 3 runs in 14 innings vs the Nationals over his last 2 starts. Atlanta has hit just .236 in division play failing to score much while averaging just 3.5 runs. Washington was just swept in Baltimore and is hitting just .230 the past week, with only 2.9 runs per game. For tehcnical purposes we want to play the under for home favorites of less than -140 off a 5 or more run home favored loss, scoring 4 or less runs vs an opponent off a road dog loss also scoring 4 or less runs. These home teams have played under 74% of the time the past few years. Look for a low scoring game tonight. For the free MLB play take the Under in the Washington at Atlanta game. BOL GC

                      Analysis:

                      NY Mets -115

Dickey toes the rubber for the Lets who in the last games he started he won all 3 with an ERA in those 3 games of 1.29. Ineresting as well the Mets bullpen is on fire not allowing an earned run in their last games and a 2.55 ERA on the year. Nolasco for the Marlins is inconsistent, with over a 6 ERA his last 3 games. Also to note, the Mets are 7-2 their last 9 road games. The Mets opened their last 3 series with a win, and I like their chances here.

Play 1 unit on the Mets.

                        Analysis:
I am going to be very brief here. Both of these pitchers have lost a lot of magic of late and in the case of Wells, his K numbers are way down and his BB Numbers are way… up. He is in fact being hit hard and in his last 4 efforts, very poor indeed. The Pirates love to beat the Cubs and they always come out swinging the bats when they play them. Maholm has had 2 poor starts of late and being a lefty puts him in a bad situation for this one, with Chicago hitting southpaws almost 40 points higher than righties and at this park we call Wrigley, .308 on the year. The Cubs have been piss poor scoring runs this year but at their best advantage to do so today. Nice Weather pattern as well for tonight's contest with winds out to the fences.

                          Bob Balfe

                          Netherlands -1

We have learned that the dominant teams time after time always beat the smaller and less-talented teams when it comes down to win-or-go-home scenarios. The Netherlands have a great defense which I do not see Slovakia being able to penetrate. Look for the Netherlands to control the tempo and time of possession, getting the easy win. Take Netherlands -1 (-130).

                          Brazil -1

The other thing we are learning is that the teams that historically own teams in the past are not allowing the trend to decease. Chile has come a long way and the South American teams have dominated play, but Brazil is the best team in this tournament and should again advance today with little to no problems. Take Brazil -1 (-115).

                          Cincinnati Reds -130

Both pitchers have similar numbers this year and have been steady for their ball clubs. The Phillies have been at home for a while as they take to the road today. Look for the Reds to continue to stay hot and outscore the Phils, providing plenty of run support for Cueto. Take the Reds.
