King Creole | MLB Total Thu, 07/22/10 - 12:35 PM

          double-dime bet 953 WAS / 954 CIN Over 8.5 BetUS
          Analysis:
2** OVER the TOTAL / WASHINGTON Nationals with HERNANDEZ @ CINCINNATI Reds with Volquez / 12:35pm ET / 9:35am PT

There's only FIVE Umpires in Major League Baseball that have gone 'Over the Total' in 65% or more of their games in 2010. TWO of those guys will be working on Thursday afternoon. The first guy going is SCOTT BARRY, who will be down here in South Florida for the Marlins / Rockies game. But we'll pass on that 'Over' based on the fact that an extremely sharp Josh Johnson is going for the Fish. Not to mention pre-game wind forecasts are strong (16 MPH+) and IN from Center Field.

The Man in Blue that WE will be riding is ED HICKOX, who comes in with a YTD record of 13-7 O/U (ranked #5)... and an average of 10.8 runs per game (ranked #2). As of June 9th. Hickox was 6-6 O/U on the season. But he's been on a high-scoring tear as of late. He's gone a perfect 3-0 O/U in his last 3 games (14.3 RPG)... and 7-1 O/U in his last 8 games (12.0 RPG). His results might not be much in the AL (2-4 O/U on the year)... but in NL games, he has gone 7-2 O/U (11.0 RPG). These results have been consistent throughout the last few seasons. In 2009, Hickox was 7-3 O/U in NL games... and 3-5 O/U in AL games. And in 2008, he was 17-10 O/U in NL games... and 8-12 O/U in AL games. It's an interesting and fairly consitent pattern to play on.

In Washington National games, Hickox has gone 6-2 O/U in the last 3 seasons. And in Cincinnati Red games, the results have been 5-1-1 O/U in the same time span. That's a combined 79% of 'Over' results. We also note that Hickox has gone 4-1-1 O/U in Thursday 'Getaway Day' games.

Edinson Volquez is making only his SECOND start of the season after being called up from Louisville. He's a solid 'Over' pitcher in his career, going 17-8-2 O/U in his last 27 starts. Also 11-2-1 O/U as a home favorite... 12-4 O/U on 4 days rest... and 8-2-2 O/U off a Quality Start.
Livian Hernandez is showing some chinks in the armor lately. ERA is 5.00 in his last 3 starts. His road ERA is a full run HIGHER than his YTD ERA. And he had problems 'In THIS Park'. His ERA when pitching in Cincinnati is close to 5.00 as well. Hernandez is also 8-3 O/U on Thursdays.

                      Thursday's Best WNBA Bets

Los Angeles Sparks at Indiana Fever (-10.5, 152.5)

It seems the only team the Sparks are capable of beating these days are the sad-sack Tulsa Shock.

Los Angeles needed overtime to get past the WNBA’s worst team Tuesday, defeating Tulsa 86-83 for just its second win in the past six games. The Sparks’ other victory in this span came against none other than the Shock last Tuesday.

"We shouldn't have even been in that position to begin with," L.A. guard Ticha Penicheiro told reporters of overtime. "I think we let them get back in the game. We threw the ball away and they capitalized on some easy baskets."

The Sparks blew a 16-point lead and managed only 13 points in the fourth quarter of Tuesday’s victory.

Los Angeles has been lost since star forward Candace Parker went down with a season-ending shoulder injury last month. It is just 3-8 with a 4-7 mark against the spread since.

                      Pick: Indiana Fever

San Antonio Silver Stars at Minnesota Lynx (+4, 153.5)

After playing under the total in nine of their first 15 games, the San Antonio Silver Stars have flipped that trend and are now favoring the over in recent outings.

San Antonio is 4-1 over/under in its last five games including Tuesday’s 80-74 loss to the Seattle Storm that toppled the 150.5-point total set by oddsmakers.

The Silver Stars haven’t exploded on offense nor have they dropped their defensive intensity, keeping both around their season average. Books are obviously over-adjusting to the team’s under trend.

Over the last five outings, San Antonio’s totals are being posted at an average number of 153 points. That’s almost four points less than the average total (156.8 points) from its first 15 games of the year.

Bettors can expect another low number when the Silver Stars visit the Lynx on Thursday. Minnesota has played below the total in all but one of its last eight games, improving to 8-11 over/under on the year.

These two Western rivals have played above the total in four of their last five meetings, including an 88-66 Lynx win that finished over the 152.5-point total back on July 8 – the lone over payday in Minnesota’s last eight games.

                      Pick: Over

                            Hondo

The formerly hot Indians proved to be no match yesterday for the Hondo Kiss Of Death, an omnipo tent force that killed the Tribe's winning streak at six and increased the deficit to 1,080 sislers.

Today, Wainwright is 10-0 at home but let's see if he can withstand his first exposure to the KOD -- 10 units on the Cards. Also, Cain looks ready and will ing and able as well to slay the Snakes -- 10 on the Giants.
