Game: Arizona Diamondbacks vs. Washington Nationals
Current Line: Arizona (-110)
Over/Under: 9.5
Play On: Arizona (-110)
Inside the Board Room:
Righthander Ian Kennedy will take the mound for the Diamondbacks to start this game. Kennedy is 6-9 this season with a 4.47 ERA. Starting this game for the Nationals will be Jason Marquis. The righthander has a 15.33 ERA to go along with a 0-4 record this season. Wil Nieves had two hits including a solo home run as the Nationals beat the Diamondbacks 4-2 on Friday. The Nationals won that game as a -110 pick?em, while the six runs went UNDER the posted over/under (9) set by sportsbooks. John Lannan allowed just four hits and two runs over seven innings for the win, while Sean Burnett had four strikeouts over two innings of relief to notch his second save. Joe Saunders was tagged with the Diamondbacks loss, giving up 10 hits and four runs over his six innings of work.
Take the Diamondbacks tonight!
Today's Free MLB Pick: Florida Marlins vs. Cincinnati Reds Over 9.5 Runs
I like the bats to come out tonight in hitter-friendly Cincinnati in a battle between two struggling starting pitchers. Sean West hast posted a 7.20 ERA on the season to this point, while Mike Leake is 0-3 with a 9.60 ERA over his last 3 starts. During that time, Leake has allowed 16 earned runs and 28 base runners in 15 innings pitched. West has only faced the Reds once in his career back in 2009, allowing 5 earned runs in 4.1 innings. The OVER is 7-1 in the Marlins last 8 games overall, while the OVER is 4-1 in the Reds last 5 games overall. The OVER is 5-0 in Marlins last 5 games vs. a starter with a WHIP greater than 1.30. The OVER is 13-3 in Marlins last 16 games vs. a right-handed starter. The OVER is 6-1 in Reds last 7 home games vs. a left-handed starter. The OVER is 7-1 in Leake's last 8 starts overall. The OVER is 4-1-1 in the last 6 meetings in this series. Take the OVER 9.5 runs Saturday.
Today's Free NFL Preseason Pick: Miami Dolphins -3
The Dolphins have quietly become a pretty good team. They don't get noticed all that much in the AFC East though. That's because that's the home of Brady and the Patriots, along with the "trash-talking" Jets. That's allowed them to fly somewhat under the radar. I'm not saying that people aren't aware of the Dolphins, as expectations are quite high. However, given that this could be the best Miami team in recent memory, I still feel that they may be slightly undervalued.
The Dolphins are well coached and they should be hungry. Head coach Tony Sparano, who dropped 55 pounds in the offseason, made the theme of training camp: "Feed the Wolf," a slogan he put on T-shirts. He was quoted as saying: "I had a meeting with the group and kind of got into them a little bit during practice about 7-9 not being good enough and how this football team shouldn't be fat. They should be starving. One of the things that we talk about is feeding the wolf with little successes every day. We feed the wolf when we do something good, and that's what our guys understand. Small successes will lead to bigger successes down the way."
Perhaps more importantly, as we've seen the past couple of years, the Dolphins also have the type of team that has the potential for preseason success. That has a lot to do with the QB rotation. Chad Henne and Chad Pennington are both very familiar with the offense. Tyler Thigpen, the former Chief, is capable. If given the chance, fourth-stringer, Pat White has the type of play-making ability that could lead to big plays against backup defensive players.
The Dolphins were 4-0 SU and 3-0-1 ATS in the preseason last year. All four victories came by a minimum of three points. That included a 4-point win over the Bucs. The previous preseason, they went 3-1 SU/ATS. They'll be looking to "feed the wolf" by earning a victory here. If the line doesn't climb above the -3 mark, consider laying the points with Miami.

Take San Francisco over Indianapolis (Sunday 1 pm NFL Network) Very seldom do you see a road team favored by this many points during the preseason. The reason is the quarterback rotation and the 49ers have a major edge once the Colts replace Peyton Manning in the first quarter of this afternoon game. After Manning expect to see a combination of Curtis Painter, Tom Brandstater, and Tom Hiller. Longtime back-up QB Jim Sorgi has moved onto the Giants to play under Eli Manning and that leaves a major void for the Colts once Manning is out of the game. Curtis Painter had limited action late during the regular season last year and played terrible. The 49ers have Alex Smith and David Carr as their first two quarterbacks and both of them have started many games in the league. That will allow them to be up at halftime and coast to a victory in the second half. Mike Singletary is 3-1 in preseason action during his tenure. Jim Caldwell is 1-3 in his four preseason games.
Free NFL Picks. Buccaneers @ Dolphins-3'. All eyes will be on the quarterbacks, but there are also other areas where both teams need improvement, Tampa Bay more than Miami. This sports handicapper predicts Tampa Bay running back Carnell Williams will have a pro bowl campaign. Williams played a full season in 2009, his first since 2006 after have 2 major knee injuries, this guy can flat our carry the football and you will see what we mean in 2010. Most experts are picking Miami to win the AFC east division, not so fast, Miami looks good on paper but you don't lose players like Joey Porter and Jason Taylor from your defense and replace them with the likes of Karlos Dansby and Jared Odrick. I understand the success and knowledge of Dolphins General Manager Bill Parcells, but the Dolphins must get past the Patriots and Jets in the AFC East. Most experts aren't expecting much from the Buccaneers, don't be surprised it this team doesn't make some noise and battle the New Orleans Saints and the Atlanta Falcons for the NFC South title , Dolphin win-3'.
Both of these starters have been ineffective and they should struggle tonight. Kennedy's had trouble on the road for most of the year; moreover, he gave up 4 ER in 4 innings at home to Washington on August 4th. The Nationals should jump on him here. AZ is 4-1-1 O/U on the road vs a team with a losing record. On the other hand, Jason Marquis' troubles continue on the mound as he tries to resurrect his career following arm surgery. Marquis, who has been working in the minor's for most of the season, has been torched to the tune of 22 runs over his last 20 innings in the major's. Arizona is 11-3 O/U on the road and 15-5 O/U following a loss. "Over" the call.
