Anyone that has followed me before in seasons past knows how much motivation factors into preseason. It's huge, and without knowing what each team is looking to do in their preseason game, it's impossible to turn a profit long term.

Obviously living in San Diego, i follow this Chargers team closely. I live in the same neighborhood as several of them, so of course i'm inclined to pay close attention to them, whether they are my favorite team or not.

Bottom line, tonight very well could be a disaster for them. San Diego as a whole are more than pissed about how the team has handled the holdouts of 2 of their best players. I'm telling you with 100% certainty, that the moment the Chargers face adversity tonight, the fans will turn on this team. It's going to happen. The Chargers are in the process of changing their identity a bit, trying to turn into more of a smashmouth team. That's cool and all, but it's DIFFERENT than what they are used to. I also know that as a Super Bowl contender, the Chargers have far more to play for than this exhibition win. Getting out of this game HEALTHY with a physical team like the Bears would be considered a win by the Chargers organization. I know that the vast majority of the Chargers starters are only going to play 12 snaps. They could get that in their very first series with a few first downs.

I have been reading closely the news out of the Bears camp. I knew the Chargers first preseason game would give us a huge opportunity backing the listed UNDERDOG. I love everything i'm hearing about coming out of the Bears training camp. I have heard and seen that the Bears are intending to play some starters all the way till the half. I love that, alot. I think this preseason game means far more to the Bears than it does to the Chargers. Considering the season Chicago had last year, i can see why they want and need to get off to a winning start this year. I believe they do that tonight in San Diego amongst a FRAGILE Chargers fan base.

I love the combo of Jay Cutler and Caleb Hanie. We all know about Cutler, but i expect him to have a big year under offensive coordinator Mike Martz. Martz is a passing game wizard, and Cutler has the arm to be successful. But this game is just as important for Hanie. I've followed Hanie a while now, and he can play damn good in the preseason. In fact, he's one of my favorite training camp QB's ever.

I KNOW the majority of the Bears starters will play far longer than that of the Chargers. I know that of the available players tonight, the Bears will be rotating the better overall players. I fully believe this preseason is more important to the Chicago Bears. The San Diego Chargers fan base is relatively skittish heading into tonight's game. What does this all add up to??

A Chicago Bears OUTRIGHT win! There's a reason why this line was low to begin with, and has only dropped further. The Chicago Bears on the MONEYLINE is our favorite bet of the first week of Preseason NFL! The Chicago Bears +115 is our TRIPLE STAR Summer Sizzler selection!

Pittsburgh has a 3-QB rotation going in Game One... in which ALL three guy~s are fighting for the STARTING spot in the regular season when Big Ben has to take a seat for 4 (or 6) games since he was a bad boy in the off-season. Look for Charlie Batch, Dennis Dixon, and Byron Leftwich to do whatever they have to do (AIRING it out!) in order to put up some gaudy numbers and impress the Steeler coaching staff.

Also helping to make our case are some pretty solid individual team ATS trends. The STEELERS are 4-1 ATS in their last 5 pre-season GAME ONES. And that includes a PERFECT 3-0 ATS under the Mike Tomlin regime. In '07, they beat New Orleans 20-7 as favs of -3 points. In '08, they beat Philadelphia 16-10 as a dog of +2 points. And last year, they beat Arizona 20-10 as a fav of -3 points. In all home games, the Steelers are 7-3 ATS in the last 4 years. Detroit has gone 1-3-1 ATS in all GAME ONES in the last 5 years...

If there is a home UNDERDOG going in Week One, then you know that we will be on the "UNDER". If you read my article in issue #1 of the 2010 Playbook football newsletter, then you know where I'm coming from. This will be the case tonight in Arizona, as Houston comes in as a road favorite of -1.5 to -2 points... with an OU Line of 33 to 33.5 points.

4-15 O/U since 2001: All NFL pre-season games in which the home team (Cards) is an UNDERDOG... and the OU line is LESS than (<) 34 points. In the last 8 seasons, these games have gone 2-10 O/U. When we focus on the first TWO weeks of the pre-season, the numbers are actually sharper: 1-8-1 O/U for all home dogs in Week ONE or TWO when the OU line is < 34 points. It also doesn't hurt us that Ari~zona is 1-6 O/U in all GAME ONES in the last 7 years.

Miami -3.5

Opened at -1.5 and has shot up. Miami likes to win in the preseason and if you look closely at their QB roatation they will be able to move the chains 4 deep in the roation. Tampa is the walking wounded and after Freeman who will see about 12 snaps, they are questionable at best. Miami with more weapons, at home, and experience galore at QB with a coach who likes to win, as Sparano is 7-1 ATS as a coach in the preseason.

Play 1 Unit on Miami...BONUS PLAY OVER 34.5 Seattle and Tennessee. Tennesse playing starters for a full quarter and both will stress offense.

Cheap number for Carpenter at home against a struggling Zambrano for the Cubbies. A Heated rivalry where the Cards always bring their A game at home for the fans in this one. Off a 3 run win last night with a weaker pitcher, I like the Cards at home to light up Zambrano and get it done by 3 to 4 runs in this one as scoring will be at a premium for the Cubs against the cards ace. Zambranos ERA is over 5 for the year and he has only won 3 games all season. Too mucg run support for Carpenter for the Cubs to deal with.

Play 1.5 to 2 Units on St. Louis

We close things out in the Pacific Northwest, with the Seahawks hosting the Titans. Seattle has gone an amazing 6-1 O/U in all pre-season home games in the last 4 years, and a PERFECT 4-0 O/U in the last two years. And with an average of 46.5 PPG, that's a nice OU 'cushion'. Meanwhile. Tennessee's road numbers are just as amazin'. The Titans are 9-2 O/U on the pre-season road in the last 5 years... and 7-1 O/U in the last 4 years... with an average of 42.6 PPG.

30-11-2 O/U last 4 years: All NFL pre-season home favorites... with n OU line in the range of 34.5 to 35.5 points (Seahawks). If these host are significant favorites (-3.5 or greater), the results shoot up to a very impressive 9-1-1 O/U. I'm all in!

Chicago Bears vs. San Diego Chargers (9pm ET)
The San Diego Chargers have never taken preseason seriously while the Chicago Bears have done well in these games under Lovie Smith, and therein lays the difference in this game.

The Bears have gone 15-11, 57.7 percent straight up in preseason under Smith, and they have gone 3-1 in two of the last three preseasons including last year. They have also been more wide open offensively in the preseason compared to the regular year under Smith, as they have scored 20 points or more in nine of their last 12 exhibition games including three out of four last season.

On top of that, the Bears had a very good draft this year that gave them some added depth that should help .them late in this game vs. the San Diego reserves. They drafted a blue-chip quarterback prospect in Dan LeFevour out of Central Michigan, as well as a very good running back in Harvey Unga out of BYU/

The Chargers meanwhile are notorious for holding out some star players entirely in preseason, such as they did with LaDainian Tomlinson in his prime and Antonio Gates in recent years. Granted, the Chargers went 3-1 last preseason, but that was due to the great depth they had, something they lost a bit of this off-season with the departures of the likes of Tomlinson and Antonio Cromartie.

So in a case where the Bears might have a slight talent edge in the second half and with a coach that probably wants to actually win the game more, we feel that Chicago is a very live underdog this week.
