      POWERSWEEP

Tulsa 34 E CAROLINA 24 - Last year Tulsa trailed EC 20-0 and cut the deficit to only 6 after 3Q’s but a horrible 4Q that included 2 IR TD’s, a SOD at the EC7 and a 49 yd EC FR TD led to the 44-17 blowout. The home team has lost 3 str (upsets the L2Y). In the last visit from Tulsa (‘06) EC never had the lead being held to just 241 yds. East Carolina is 1-5ATS in CUSA openers. These two met in the CUSA Title game in ‘08 and Tulsa was at home and had a 28-14 FD edge but lost due to TO’s. TY Tulsa has 14 ret starters and is a much stronger team than the ‘09 version while EC is making some large changes on both offense and defense and has just 7 ret starters with 32 lettermen lost and figures to be in a rebuilding year. The visitor is 3-0 SU/ATS.

TEXAS TECH 38 Smu 24 - In their 3 recent meetings SMU has been non-competitive with TT winning by an avg of 42-6 but they covered the last meeting in ‘08 (+36’) losing 43-7. Both teams have pass happy offenses with June Jones firmly committed to it but Tommy Tuberville has opted to stick with Leach’s pass attack while adding more running to it.Texas Tech is 16-1 SU and 12-2-1 ATS in home openers. Both teams have explosive offenses and TT’s edge on defense is not as much as you would think (#53 vs #75). SMU is 13-5-1 as a DD AD and is capable of making this a game in the 4Q.

        POINTWISE

        COLLEGE KEY RELEASES

RATING: 5 TEXAS TECH over Smu

TEXAS TECH 51 - Smu 27 - (3:30 - ESPN) -- Shootout! Tech will go it without Leach, who designed their nearly unstoppable passing "O", but the Raiders will not be green at QB, with Potts & Sheffield returning. So altho Tuberville takes over, again expect good things. The Ponies, of course, have turned it all around, under the tutelage of the brilliant June Jones (47-pt bowl cover) on the heels of a pair of 1-11 seasons. Certainly aren't under the radar anymore. TT the play.

CONFERENCE USA GAME OF THE MONTH

          Tulsa at East Carolina
          Play: Tulsa

Now that the line has dropped back to a touchdown it's time to grab the Golden Hurricane before it rises again on game day. This is a double revenge situation for Tulsa who is still smarting from a 27-24 home loss in the conference closer two years ago to these Pirates. Tulsa was an 11 point favorite in that game. Last year Tulsa dropped a heartbreaking 46-45 decision to 13th ranked Houston the week prior to meeting East Carolina. That game was a back and forth game that took all the air out of the Golden Hurricane. They followed that up by being pummeled 44-17 by tonight's opponent.

Tulsa returns eight starters to an offense that should revert back to previous standards. They averaged 47.2 ppg just two seasons ago. While they have lost five starters who were expected to be in the two deep because of season ending injuries, this remains a very potent scoring unit.

East Carolina is off back to back nine win seasons but they are in a new regime as Ruffin McNeill is now the full time head coach. He led the Pirates in last years 20-17 loss to Arkansas in the Liberty Bowl. East Carolina returns just eight total starters this season and McNeill has spent most of the camp teaching fundamentals to his young and inexperienced squad. The Pirates have played very well at Dowdy-Ficklen Stadium posting a 10-2 mark here the past two seasons. But those teams returned veteran casts of 16 starters each season. The last time East Carolina brought back ten starters or less was in 2004 and the team went on to a 2-9 record. We could see a repeat this season.

Bettors' best friend: Sunday's wagering tips

            Weather to watch

Atlanta at Florida – 30 percent chance of isolated thundershowers

            Who’s hot

Boston is 8-2 in its last 10 home meetings with the White Sox.

Tampa Bay is 40-15 in its last 55 meetings with Baltimore.

Minnesota is 27-11 in its last 38 overall games.

Colorado has won seven of its last nine meetings with San Diego.

            Who’s not

Toronto is 4-10 in its last 14 Sunday games.

Washington is 14-40 in its last 54 road games.

Detroit is 17-36 in its last 53 road games.

St. Louis has lost nine of its last 11 games.

Chicago is 5-13 in its last 18 home games.

            Key stat

1 – The number of total runs Seattle starter Felix Hernandez has allowed over his last five starts, spanning 37 innings. He has struck out 48 batters over that span.

            Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Josh Hamilton – knee/back. Hamilton expected to play Saturday after missing some time over the last week with a wonky knee. He had a lubrication shot in his right knee on Tuesday and says it feels better. However, he left Saturday’s game with lower-back stiffness.

            Game of the day

Chicago White Sox at Boston Red Sox

            Notable quotable

“That was garbage. That's just bad baseball. It's only the fourth inning. If they're going to hold me on, I'm going to roll out. The circumstances were kind of out of whack, but the game was too early. It was only the fourth inning. If it happened again, I'd do it again. It's one of those things where I'm a hard-nosed player. I'm grimey.”

-Nationals outfielder Nyjer Morgan after he charged the mound in Wednesday’s brawl with the Florida Marlins. Morgan has appealed his eight-game suspension.

            Tips and notes

Alex Rodriguez is scheduled to come off the DL on Sunday and it looked like that was a sure thing earlier in the week. Now that doesn’t seem so concrete. He took some BP and fielding drills before Saturday’s game but was non-committal about Sunday’s game, saying his return may need to wait until Monday or Tuesday.

Derek Lowe knows what the issue is with his pitching elbow and he plans on throwing through it. An MRI showed no ligament or tendon damage, but there is a bone chip that’s stuck in the joint. Lowe who’s now 37 and has never been on the DL in his career expects to make his scheduled start Wednesday against Pittsburgh.

De La Rosa is coming off 3 consecutive quality starts, including a 7IP, 1ER, 4H performance v SF. De La Rosa has a 4.17FIP and 3.61xFIP (15the best in MLB if he had enough IP to qualify) despite a 4.59 BB/9IP rate that would be on pace for the worst in MLB if he had enough innings to qualify. Richard has allowed 3ER or fewer in each of his past 7 starts. He has a 3.61FIP and 4.10xFIP and also has a 3.50 BB/9IP rate (20th worst in MLB). Bottom line on this play: the Padres have lost 9 in a row. They're hitting just .216 and are getting outscored 51-21 over that stretch. The Rockies have won 9 of 13. With no discernible pitching advantage in this one and the aforementioned trends in effect, the value lies with the Rockies in this one
