Hot Lines: Today's best MLB bets

Arizona at San Francisco (-230, 8)

The San Francisco Giants could have a serious injury plaguing their lineup as they head down the stretch. Second baseman Freddy Sanchez is dealing with a right shoulder injury that he picked up when he was making a throw across his body to turn a double play in Saturday’s 10-9 loss to the Colorado Rockies.
"Obviously, I'm concerned,” Sanchez told reporters. “I can't throw the ball. I don't want to hurt the team if I can't get a play done or if I can't turn a double play or I can't make a relay."

He was scheduled to undergo an MRI Monday, but no results of the tests have been released yet. Sanchez was hitting .393 over his last 28 games.

    Pick: Under

Boston Red Sox at Chicago White Sox

The Chicago White Sox don’t have much to play for right now and a lot of the club’s players are wondering what next year will bring for them. Paul Konerko, the team’s offensive leader, is one of them. Konerko will become a free agent in the offseason and should get some nice offers after putting up 38 home runs and 106 RBIs to go along with a .314 batting average. But for now, Konerko’s trying to concentrate on the final games in the season ahead of the White Sox.

"At the same time, I recognize the score of what's going on, so it will be a balance of coming in and preparing as usual and getting ready to play because these games are going to matter to Boston, and other teams deserve that everyone is in here and ready to play,” Konerko told reporters.

"Then there's the human part of it where you recognize everything else, and that's the tough balance this time of year when it comes to that stuff. I'm not going to do it right for 156 games and then come in and just throw that down the drain to sit back and get away from what I've been doing."

    Pick: Red Sox

Houston Astros at Cincinnati Reds – 60 percent chance of showers. Winds blowing out to center at 11 mph.
Milwaukee Brewers at New York Mets – 80 percent chance of thunderstorms. Winds blowing to left field at 17 mph.

      Who’s hot

Philadelphia Phillies are 17-4 in their last 21 games.
New York Yankees are 7-3 in Sabathia’s last 10 road starts.
Cincinnati Reds are 12-4 in their last 16 home games.
Tampa Bay Rays are 28-11 in their last 39 home games.
Minnesota Twins are 41-17 in their last 58 games.

      Who’s not

New York Mets are 2-6 in their last eight games.
Florida Marlins are 4-9 in their last 13 games.
Seattle Mariners are 4-12 in their last 16 games.
Los Angeles Dodgers are 3-8 in their last 11 games.
Oakland A’s are 3-7 in their last 10 road games.

      Key stat

98 – Number of games it took Anquan Boldin to reach 600 receptions, which is the fewest in NFL history. Boldin had eight catches for 142 yards and three touchdowns against the Cleveland Browns on Sunday and has 7807 career receiving yards with 47 touchdowns.

      Injury that shouldn’t be overlooked

Jahvid Best (toe), Detroit Lions – Best is dealing with a Grade 2 case of turf toe and is considered day-to-day. That may be optimistic considering how turf toe injuries have a tendency to linger, but Best plans to play at Green Bay in Week 4. Best has 124 rushing yards and 183 receiving yards with five total touchdowns through three games for the Lions.

      Game of the day

      Los Angeles Dodgers at Colorado

      Notable quotable

"He did want to know what his status was, and I told him directly. I hope I never have another manager, at least while I'm sitting in this chair. I hope I never have another manager of the Chicago White Sox other than him." – White Sox GM on manager Ozzie Guillen’s future with the team.

      Notes and tips

The Buffalo Bills have put Trent Edwards on waivers after they couldn’t find a trading partner for the benched quarterback. Edwards was ineffective over the first two weeks before the Bills decided to give Ryan Fitzpatrick the start in Week 3 against the Patriots. Fitzpatrick got the chains rolling and Buffalo decided it was best to part ways with Edwards, after taking five months to finally name him their Week 1 starter.

The San Francisco 49ers axed offensive coordinator Jimmy Raye just a day after the club fell to 0-3 on the season with a 31-10 loss to the Kansas City Chiefs. San Francisco has scored just 38 points through three games, second fewest in the league behind Carolina.

Baltimore Orioles manager Buck Showalter was suspended one game and reliever Alfredo Simon was given a one-game ban after he plunked Toronto Blue Jays slugger Jose Bautista in the fifth inning of a 5-2 loss to the Jays on Sunday. Showalter served his suspension Monday, while Simon is expected to appeal his suspension.
