One of the biggest games of the season in the Pac-10 will be played this Saturday. In fact, the winner of this game will have the inside track to the conference title. I am not convinced that the oddsmakers have caught up with this Cardinal team. They already have big road wins over UCLA and Notre Dame and those certainly got my attention. They have a balanced attack on offense led by QB Andrew Luck, the likely first pick in the NFL Draft come April. Their defense has been the real improvement as this veteran group returns seven starters and have played better in 2010. Other than their opening game against Sacramento State, the Cardinal have played stiff competition (UCLA, Wake Forest, and Notre Dame) and the defense has been outstanding.
Certainly cannot take anything away from Oregon. The Ducks did win last week at Arizona State, but they were torched for 600 yards in that game. Look for Coach Jim Harbaugh and company to find the holes and exploit the Ducks questionable defense. The home team will have extra motivation with Game Day being in town, but the visitor has the talent to roll with the punches. This one will be tight!

This selection will be what I call a 'sandwich play,' taking Ohio State to cover and also taking the under, both for 4-units. I think at the very worst, we will only lose one of the bets with a good chance to win both. My thinking is based on the fact that the Buckeyes have an outstanding defense and Illinois, at the very best, will be lucky to score 14 points. This means Ohio State will have to score between 32-35 points for us to be able to cover both. If this game goes over, I see no chance that Illinois will be able to stay with the Buckeyes and cover the spread. Over the years I have used this strategy often and been very successful.
As for the game itself, this Buckeye team is as balanced as anyone in the country. QB Terrelle Pryor is now comfortable throwing the football and his legs are still there. This is the first road game for the Buckeyes, but Illinois is not a hostile environment and Ohio State has held Illinois to 10 points or less in 7 of the last 13 meetings. Illinois did pull an upset win in 2007 as a 15-point underdog and will enter this game off of a bye. That being said, the talent gap is huge and this maybe Coach Tressel's best club yet. They have an awesome defense and a talented offense, what else can be said!
OHIO STATE BUCKEYES 35, ILLINOIS FIGHTING ILLINI 10
5 Unit Play. #22 Take Michigan State Spartans +2 over Wisconsin Badgers (Saturday 3:30 pm ABC)
(2008 Michigan State -5, 25-24) (2009 Wisconsin -2, 38-30)
I circled this one before the season started, as I was totally convinced that the light nonconference schedule for the Badgers would come back to bite them in a big way. I see no reason to change my thinking during game week. Last week's pounding of Austin Peay, 70-3, only gave me more value in the line. The Badgers will be coming off a three-game home stand while the Spartans will be playing their fifth straight home game.
Two strong reasons for this selection are as follows: No. 1, the defense of the Badgers has not been tested against a balanced attack like Michigan State. This balance will give the Spartans opportunities to score points at will if they can run the football and I believe that they will be able to accomplish this. No. 2, in order for Michigan State to win this game they must be able to control the Badgers running attack. The Badgers will get their share of rushing yards because their backs (Clay and White) and line are good, but if the Spartans can cut down on the big plays they will be okay. The Wisconsin passing attack is only effective when they can control the game with a running attack and not when they are forced to throw the football. QB Scott Tolzien struggled last year against teams that shut down his running attack and the Spartans have the personnel to do that as well in this game, anchored by LB Greg Jones.
Wisconsin will get a boast in the passing attack with the return of WR Nick Toon and WR/KR/PR David Gilreath, but I question the timing that they will have since they have not had any game action in a couple of weeks. I felt Michigan State would enter as a three-point favorite but the oddsmakers must have been impressed by the 70-3 win last week by the Badgers. I am not falling for it and I expect the return of Coach Mark Dantonio (press box) to put the Spartans over the top in this important game for both teams. I am totally convinced the Badgers lack of a defense will be the story.
MICHIGAN STATE SPARTANS 31, WISCONSIN BADGERS 24
4 Unit Play. #23 Take Northwestern Wildcats -5 ½ over Minnesota Golden Gophers (Saturday 12 pm ESPN)
(2008 - Minnesota -7, 17-24) (2009 - Northwestern -1, 24-35)
If you have been reading my Fourth Down and Inches column you will notice that I have been preaching to everyone to go against Minnesota every game this season. They are coming off a loss to Northern Illinois last Saturday and their coaching staff is all but fired come November. On paper this appears to be a blowout, as Northwestern is quietly undefeated on the season and realistically they could stay that way for quite some time. They have a really favorable schedule by not having to play Ohio State or Michigan and hosting Iowa and Michigan State. Northwestern is 6-2 straight-up in their last eight Big Ten road games and this low number is just too good to pass up.
Minnesota has one of the worst defenses in the country and that does not bode well facing a very efficient spread offense like the Wildcats have. Northwestern has not lost a beat with QB Dan Persa replacing Mike Kafka, as he already has 8 touchdowns on the season and just one interception. Northwestern will be able to outscore their way to a victory on Saturday. Northwestern is 6-1 ATS in their last 7 road games. Minnesota is 3-8 (3 pushes) in their last 14 home games when they are the underdog. Going against the Gophers increases your bankroll yet again in what will likely be a high scoring affair.
NORTHWESTERN WILDCATS 35, MINNESOTA GOLDEN GOPHERS 24
4 Unit Play. #44 Take Eastern Michigan Eagles +10 over Ohio Bobcats (Saturday 12 pm ESPN 3)
(2008 - DNP) (2009 - DNP)
Finding anything positive about a team that's given up over 1,100 yards and 125 points the past two weekends really takes some doing. But statistics, an overused and over-rated handicapping tool, do tell a factual story when broken down by individual performance. Such is the case here. Both Ohio and Eastern were blown out by a highly ranked Ohio State football team led by all-everything QB Terrell Pryor. In the Ohio game (OSU 43 - 7) Pryor was finished working before halftime, while versus EMU (OSU 73 - 20) he played a full three quarters along with his starting offense and defense. The bright spot for the Eagles is they could score, using long drives against this first unit. Not so for the Bobcats, whose only points game in the 4th quarter against the lower part of the depth chart. Eagle' QB Alex Gillett is maturing into the QB of the future for coach Ron English as he's a threat to run and is an efficient passer, completing 58 percent of his passes for 6 TDs with just 3 INTs. His counterpart on the Bobcat side, Boo Jackson, averages a mere 125 yards/game and has thrown 5 INTs and just 4 TDs. Neither team has discovered the meaning of the word "defense," so both game plans, out of necessity, switch to the offensive side of the ball and it's here that Eastern Michigan in noticeably better. After 16 straight losses, head-coach Ron English will finally get a chance to give a victory speech to his players. Take the points as an upset is in the making.
EASTERN MICHIGAN EAGLES 24, OHIO BOBCATS 21
7 Unit Play. #82 Take Iowa Hawkeyes -7 over Penn State Nittany Lions (Saturday 8 pm ABC)
(2008 Penn State -7, 23-24) (2009 Penn State -9, 21-10)
College Game of the Year. I really believe in this 2010 Iowa Hawkeye Club. They have the fortune of playing all of the Big Ten elite teams at Kinnick Stadium this season. I expect them to win here going away and they host Wisconsin (Oct. 23rd) and Ohio State (Nov. 20th) down the road. The Hawkeyes are in good hands with QB Ricky Stanzi and he has a very talented group of wide receivers to throw to. If the club does have a weakness, it would be the running game. However, it will only be needed to run out the clock on Saturday night. The Iowa defense is one of the best units in the country. Thus far nobody has rushed for more than 100 yards against them and expect that to continue this week even though they will be facing RB Evan Royster.
As I look at Penn State, QB Robert Bolden is a freshman and I expect him to really struggle against this Iowa defense. Things will be compounded with the loss of RT Lou Eliades. Granted RB Royster did rush for 187 last week against Temple, but 60 of those yards came of the first play of the game. I see no possible way he will have success this week against Iowa's front four.
Both clubs enter not feeling any pressure, as they have suffered losses on the season already. Iowa's loss to Arizona was misleading because a couple of first quarter mistakes really put them behind the eight-ball in that game. Penn State should have lost to Alabama by 30-plus points, but Coach Saban called of the guns early in the fourth quarter. That will not happen today and Iowa will dominate this game for 60 minutes. I really see no way the Nittany Lions score over 10 points in this game, as this is not the Penn State offense of old. Penn State is 1-5 ATS in their last six road games when they are an underdog. Iowa is 12-4 ATS in their last 16 games against teams with a winning record. Iowa makes a statement that they belong atop the conference with Ohio State and we collect big in the process as well.
IOWA HAWKEYES 24, PENN STATE NITTANY LIONS 10

4 Unit Play. #99 Take San Francisco 49ers +7 over Atlanta Falcons (Sunday 1 pm Fox)

The 49ers have not played to their potential thus far, but this will be their third road game of the first four games to open up the 2010 season. Atlanta is coming off an emotional divisional win over New Orleans and I expect a letdown to occur this Sunday at the Georgia Dome. These two teams met last year and Atlanta won going away, but RB Frank Gore did not play in that game. Much like Dallas faced last week in Houston, the season is certainly on the line for San Francisco and I expect them to go all out in order to achieve their first victory on the season. The 49ers have played well on the road as an underdog under Coach Mike Singletary, covering 7 of their 10 games (1 push). QB Alex Smith will finally play to his potential in this game and all the 49ers to take this one down to the wire. San Francisco is 6-0 (3 pushes) in their last nine games following an ATS loss.

SAN FRANCISCO 49ERS 23, ATLANTA FALCONS 21

4 Unit Play. #116 Take Jacksonville Jaguars +8 over Indianapolis Colts (Sunday 4:05 pm CBS)

The Jaguars came in flat last week, but that will not be the case this Sunday as this team really gets up when they play the Indianapolis Colts. The Colts gave up 519 yards of total offense last week against Denver, a weak offensive team. I expect Jacksonville to have similar success this Sunday. This is the Colts third straight road game in the first four games this season and that will eventually catch up with them. Home dogs of over a touchdown are always strong plays in the NFL and today is no different. Indianapolis wins this one, but it comes only by a field goal.

INDIANAPOLIS COLTS 24, JACKSONVILLE JAGUARS 21

5 Unit Play. #117 Take Houston Texans -3 over Oakland Raiders (Sunday 4:05 pm CBS) For the first time in a while, the Oakland Raiders had some expectations going into this season and they have laid an egg thus far as they are currently 1-2. The Texans have had great success against the Raiders, going 4-1 straight-up and ATS in their five meetings. This includes a 29-6 beat down last year in Houston. The Texans have high expectations this season beyond just making the playoffs, but they need to keep winning as the Colts are right on their tail. Houston came out flat last week at home against Dallas and now needs this game to avoid dropping to 2-2 on the season.

The talent edge in this game is enormous and I expect the Raiders to struggle to move the football against this Texans defense. The Raiders have already made a QB change and they just do not have the weapons on offense to make big plays. Houston is 8-2 ATS in their last 10 games following an ATS loss.

HOUSTON TEXANS 31, OAKLAND RAIDERS 20

4 Unit Play. #124 Take New York Giants -4 over Chicago Bears (Sunday 8:15 pm NBC)

The Bears are coming off an emotional win over the Packers on Monday Night Football but now must go on the road to play the Giants in a short week. The Giants are coming off a terrible performance last Sunday against the Titans and I expect Coach Tom Coughlin to lay the whip into his team, as his job is now on the line. The Bears have a false sense of confidence as the Packers gave them the game on Monday Night with terrible special teams play and costly penalties that negated numerous turnovers. I really like the Giants front seven on defense compared to the weak offensive line of the Chicago Bears. QB Cutler will force the football downfield and I expect the Giants to pick him off a couple of times. The Giants need to cut down on their penalties as well, but if they do not beat themselves like the Packers did, I expect them to win this game comfortably. Chicago is 4-11 ATS in their last 15 games an underdog. The Giants are 18-7 (1 push) in their last 26 games in October. Both trends hold true again, as the Giants cannot afford to lose two straight home games.

College Football Picks

3-Unit Play. #134 Take Mississippi (-3) over Kentucky (12 p.m., Saturday, October 2)
This isn't an overreaction to Ole Miss's win over Fresno State, but they did really handle Pat Hill's team. And even more so, Kentucky looked very poor at Florida. I was really expecting the Wildcats to give the Gators a game last Saturday, however that wasn't the case. The Rebels in Oxford at this number is a good pick. Kentucky has skill and playmakers, but after seeing them get smashed in their only test of the season thus far, it makes me view them a bit differently. Ole Miss can get back to 1-1 in SEC play with a victory here, and that's exactly what I expect them to do.

3-Unit Teaser Play. #108 Take Connecticut (-1.5) over Vanderbilt (12 p.m., Saturday, October 2)
#155 Take Ohio State (-11) over Illinois (12 p.m., Saturday, October 2)
Not a big fan of teasers but these were two teams we had eyed before the lines came out and the numbers came out a bit higher than we had first figured. But we still really like both the Huskies and Buckeyes to handle their business this week, and so I think this is a scenario where we can put together a rare teaser for us and back the original teams we had a reads on. Ohio State to win by a couple of scores makes me more confident than laying the full spread, and UConn, too, I like to win at home over Vandy.

3-Unit Play. #164 Take Oregon State (-3.5) over Arizona State (6:30 p.m., Saturday, October 2)
The Beavers are tough in Corvallis. Over the last three seasons at home in conference games they are 9-3. During that same span the Sun Devils are 4-8 in Pac 10 road games. I don't see this as a crazy blowout, but I will take Mike Riley at home coaching up his team off a loss, as well as the Rodgers brothers and the skill of the Beavers.

4-Unit Play. #157 Take Georgia (-4.5) over Colorado (7 p.m., Saturday, October 2)
We have the 'under' in Georgia's win total this season, so I had an idea this Bulldogs team wouldn't be as good as some thought. But we did catch a break with A.J. Green's suspension to help aid us in their slow start. But he is back this Saturday and there is no way their offense doesn't get a big boost. And to be frank, there is no reason why Chris Bobo, the offensive coordinator, doesn't opens up the offense with their top weapon back, as the coaching stuff doesn't have anything to lose, except perhaps their jobs. And let's be honest, getting out of the SEC could help them refocus - and it's not a game at Austin, Texas or Norman, Oklahoma. At best this is an average Colorado team. So when laying it all out on the table, I have no problem backing a middle of the road SEC team over a middle of the road Big 12 team. Go with the better team from the better conference.

3-Unit Play. Take Washington/USC 'Under' 60.5 (8 p.m., Saturday, October 2)
The Trojans defense at home will be the ex-factor in keeping this combined score under the 60 mark. Jake Locker has really struggled thus far in the limelight and I don't see anything crazy from him on the road here. Neither offense is wowing anyone (at least not against legit competition) and I don't see either really busting out for a crazy number on the scoreboard. The 'Under' is 21-7 in USC's last 28 home games, as well as 3-0-1 in the last four meetings between these two. Washington won't hit for more than 20 and I think that gives us the cash here.

6-Unit Big Ten Game of the Month Play. #176 Take Iowa (-7) over Penn State (8 p.m., Saturday, October 2)
Penn State has not shown itself to be an offensive juggernaut by any stretch of the imagination this season. They don't have a thriving passing game with their true freshman quarterback and the running game has taken a hit because of that fact. And on the road up against a super tough Iowa defense, we will see more of the same inefficiencies. The Hawkeyes have the defensive skill to really hassle Penn State's Robert Bolden into mistakes, just as he made at Alabama. Iowa can produce points in all three phases of the game. That will be too much for an inferior Nittany Lions side. Iowa wins by 17.

Not sure if we have a trend going for all these ACC 'unders' but I really like them all and think we can turn a profit with this quartet. I have just seen a majority of this conference's teams struggle, so in a way I feel like linesmakers are giving these offenses too much credit. For instance, Wake Forest couldn't score a single point last week and all of a sudden they are assumed to score 24-30 points? I think we can hit three of four, and that's the goal with the small plays on these totals selections.

1-Unit Play. #168 Take Rice (+12.5) over SMU (7 p.m., Saturday, October 2)
Give me the points here. Rice has played decent against the likes of fellow in-state opponents Texas and Baylor, and here I think they can do good as a home underdog. Small value play with the number in our corner.

NFL Picks

4-Unit Play. Take Denver/Tennessee 'Under' 43 (1 p.m., Sunday, October 3)

I really like this total selection between the Broncos and Titans. Neither offense is too explosive and I feel good about the defenses doing their part here to keep the opposition from any big numbers. I feel as if the running games will dictate a lot, and I don't see either running away from each other, so the ground games will work for all 60 minutes. Look for a scoreline around 21-17 and not much more than that.

3-Unit Play. #211 Take Seattle (-1) over St. Louis (1 p.m., Sunday, October 3)

One win doesn't do much for me with the Rams, and even if the Seahawks aren't a legit playoff contender, I still believe they will ride their good start to another victory. Stephen Jackson can't be 100 percent after leaving the Redskins' game last week, so minus their best player at his best, that bodes well for the road squad in this one.

4-Unit Play. Take Indianapolis/Jacksonville 'Under' 46 (4:05 p.m., Sunday, October 3)

Another totals play for week four that I am sold on. The Jags offense is really inept, and I don't see it changing against the Colts. I am sure Peyton Manning will account for his points, but both offenses aren't on the same level, so the Colts will score and the Jags won't. Indy wins 27-10 and this one stays under the posted total.

4-Unit Play. #217 Take Houston (-3) over Oakland (4:15 p.m., Sunday, October 3)

No way these two are on the same tier of the NFL pyramid. Yes, Houston crashed and burned last week, but they are still 2-1 and that lost came to most people's NFC favorite in Dallas. Oakland couldn't even convert a chip shot field goal at the end of their last game to beat an average Cardinals team. The Raiders are still closer to the Raiders than a winning team. Give me the Texans to bounce back in a big way.
