NBA PLAYS
New York/CHARLOTTE under 206½
These two played last night in New York and the total closed at 204½. The game soared over, as the clubs combined for 217 and what we have here is an overreaction to that score. Fact is, the Knicks shot 52% from the field, hit 24 of 25 free throws and made 10, three-pointers. Not a chance do they repeat that tonight against a Larry Brown coached team. The Bobcats will play their style tonight and it does not include run and shoot. They’ll make the necessary adjustments and after trailing all night last night and being behind by double digits most of the way, you can expect a complete reversal of form from them here. Charlotte is a team that preaches defense and coming off a loss that defensive strategy will be employed here and the bottom line is that there is very little chance of the Cats allowing the Knicks to dictate the tempo. This game might go under by 20 points. Play: New York/Charlotte under 206½ (Risking 2 units).
Chicago +1.37 over PHOENIX
Some things never change and what has not changed in Phoenix forever is a team that does not play defense and that’s why they’ll never win anything but regular season games. Only this season that defense looks worse than ever. The Suns have allowed an alarming 116 points or more in three of its last four games and four of its last six. Furthermore, its offense no longer features four or five guys that can light it up. Steve Nash, more known for his playmaking then scoring, has to not only be the court general but now he’s being relied on too heavily to score points too. The Phoenix Suns are a team on the road to disaster while the Bulls are on the road to elite status. Chicago played in L.A last night and lost but they were right there the whole game and trailed by just a single point going to the fourth quarter. They’ve won five of its last seven with only losses over that stretch coming in San Antonio and in Los Angeles last night. The Suns are living on reputation but this is the worst Suns team in years and returning home from a trip surely is not in their favor. The Bulls play tremendous defense and Derrick Rose is by far the best player on the court. Rose should absolutely be able to do anything he wants against this feeble host and that means leading the Bulls to an easy win. Play: Chicago +1.37 (Risking 2 units).
NHL PLAYS
Dallas +1.25 over OTTAWA
The Stars were really jacked up to play a couple of games in Ontario because just like all teams, they have a bunch of players from the area. They came up lame in its first game in Ontario against the Maple Leafs but you can expect a much more spirited effort here. Not only do they rarely get a chance to play in this area but the Stars have lost four straight on the road and what you’re going to get out of them tonight is a strong effort from start to finish. The Sens are coming off a 3-2 win over the Kings and that looks good on paper but the fact is, they mustered a lousy 19 shots on net and have been held to very few scoring chances in three straight games. That win takes a bit of heat off them after they were destroyed in the previous three games but it was anything ut impressive. It’s also worth noting that that Ottawa has weekend games with the Penguins and Leafs on deck and could easily be caught looking ahead to that. Ottawa is not playing well and offer up nothing as the chalk. Play: Dallas +1.25 (Risking 2 units).
Columbus -½ +1.28 over N.Y. ISLANDERS
Let’s preface this by saying that laying pucks on the road is usually not a good idea but we’ll make a rare exception here for a number of reasons. First, the Islanders are an extremely fragile team right now and should the Jackets score first, it’s big trouble for the home side, as they’ll have that “here we go again” state of mind. Secondly, C-Bus is only too aware of the Islanders 12-game losing streak and addressed it in practice yesterday by stating that there is no way they’re taking this team lightly. The Jackets are also 7-1 on the road and each and every player loves playing for Scott Arniel. The Jackets have reeled off four in a row and confidence is soaring, especially after back-to-back shutouts over the Sharkies and Preds. In fact, the Jackets have four shutouts over its last nine games and the Islanders have scored two or less in 11 straight games. Yeah, the Islanders will eventually win a game but with four regular defensemen out and the offense pressing, that funk is very likely not going to end tonight against this focuses intruder. Play: Columbus -½ +1.28 (Risking 2 units).
N.Y. Rangers +1.31 over TAMPA BAY
Offensively speaking, the Bolts have proven to be deadly but relying on one line to carry the team all season will only last so long. The Lightning has deficiencies on defense along with unreliable goaltending and that’s not a recipe for laying juice. The Rangers play more of a grind it out style but you might be surprised to learn that they’ve scored the exact same amount of goals as the Bolts while surrendering less. Also note that the Rangers excel against Tampa Bay and so does goaltender Henrik Lundqvist. In fact, the Rangers won the last three meetings last season by a combined 18-4, and have gone 10-3-0 in the last 13 matchups while Lundqvist has gone 7-1 in his last eight vs Tampa with a 1.84 GAA. Additionally, the Rangers are a solid 7-3 on the road. Play: N.Y. Rangers +1.31 (Risking 2 units).
