RED-HOT 58-29 MLB HIGH ROLLER WINNER!

At 8:05 pm, our selection is on the Texas Rangers over the Oakland Athletics. This has not been the kind of follow-up season for which Rangers righthander Colby Lewis had hoped. After a great 2010 campaign in which he returned to the Majors for the first time since 2007, Lewis has regressed significantly in 2011. In 17 starts, Lewis is just 8-7 with a 4.29 ERA (after posting a 3.72 ERA last season). But there is some good news among the 2011 numbers. Lewis had disastrous back-to-back starts in early June surrendering 15 runs in just 4 2/3 innings in losses to the Tigers and Twins. But since those poor outings he has been pretty good, with wins in three of his four starts, while allowing just seven runs in 27 1/3 innings (an ERA of just 2.30). And Lewis also has a strikeouts-to-walks ratio of 28 to 7 during this time, which is considerably better than his ratio up to that point. I look for Lewis to keep it going at home tonight against an Oakland squad which has been struggling to score runs lately, and one which was recently swept in a three-game series by the lowly Marlins. Oakland righthander Brandon McCarthy recently came off the DL after missing the entire month of June, and although he pitched well in his return start on July 4, he lost for the fifth time this season, and has not won a game now since his second start of the season back on April 10. The A's are a dreadful 29-58 (minus 21 games on the money line) as a road dog the past two season. Take the Rangers. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

BASEBALL ROADKILL WINNER (Off 2-0 Sweep)!

At 7:15 pm, our selection is on the St. Louis Cardinals over the Arizona Diamondbacks. Finally, Chris Carpenter is on a roll, and it couldn't come at a better time for the St. Louis Cardinals. The Cards are in a dogfight with -- are you ready for this -- the Pittsburgh Pirates, and pretty much everything they've done for the first two months of the season, they've done without Carpenter. Oh, he's been pitching all season, it's just that until the latter half of June, Carpenter really wasn't helping his team at all. On June 17, after 15 starts, Carpenter was 1-7 with a 4.47 ERA, and he must have had people wondering if the years of innings piling up on his arm had finally taken their toll. But lo-and-behold, Carpenter is back, having gone 3-0 with a 0.75 ERA and 0.88 WHIP in his next three starts, lowering his season ERA all the way down to 3.74. He has a chance to make it four in a row and help his team some more against a surging D-Backs team and an almost-All Star in righthander Daniel Hudson. Carpenter suffered one of his worst defeats at the hands of the D-Backs in Arizona back in mid-April. But despite that setback, Carpenter has pitched very well against Arizona in his career, and in fact that was his only loss against them in 11 starts, as he is 4-1 with a 3.50 ERA in his career against the D-Backs. The Cards are 7-4 in the last 11 meetings at Busch Stadium heading into this game, and I look for Carpenter to redeem himself from the loss in April. Take St. Louis. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
