    BIG AL

    73% BASEBALL UNDERDOG ROUND-TRIPPER!

At 1:05 pm, our selection is on the Toronto Blue Jays over the New York Yankees. It's been a forgotten season for Yankee righthander Phil Hughes, who went 0-1 with a 10.94 ERA in three April starts before landing on the DL with arm fatigue and in his return start before the break (July 6), Hughes didn't do much to show that he's over that injury, lasting just five innings and 87 pitches against the Indians and taking his second loss of the season. If you're the Yankees, you'd almost rather have a specific injury like a pulled muscle or strained ligament than a tired arm syndrome and it wouldn't be at all surprising to see New York make a move for some rotation insurance at the trade deadline. For now, it's going to give Hughes another shot, but it will be a tough one against the high-scoring Jays in Toronto, especially since he's just 2-3 with a 4.84 ERA in 16 appearances (nine starts) against the Jays in his career. The Yankees are one of two 800-pound gorillas in the AL East (along with the Red Sox), but it's been the Blue Jays that have been pushing the Bronx Bombers around in their home park recently, taking eight of the last 11 meetings played at the Rogers Centre. Take the Jays. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.

    MLB ROADKILL WINNER (19-9 RUN)!

At 1:35 pm, our selection is on the Baltimore Orioles over the Cleveland Indians. The Orioles are wondering which version of righthanded starter Mitch Atkins will show up today in his third start of the season. Will it be the one that limited the Rangers to just one run on eight hits with four strikeouts and no walks in six innings in his first start? Or will it be the one who went out five days later and got absolutely destroyed by the Red Sox? I'm betting it will be the first version of Atkins. For one thing, going into Fenway Park for the first time can be a daunting experience even for a veteran pitcher, and for Atkins it obviously psyched him out last Sunday and he probably had no chance from the get-go. Secondly, this will be his first start in his new home park of Camden Yards and as such it will be the first time that he's had the crowd on this side. Thirdly, the opposing starter today will be righthander Jeanmar Gomez, who at 23 years old is two years Atkins junior, and Gomez has struggled this year with an 0-1 record and 4.91 ERA in just three starts. The O's snapped a nine-game losing streak with a victory on Saturday night and look to even this four game series with a win today. Take the Orioles. As always, good luck...Al McMordie.
