    MLB NEWS AND NOTES
Worley And Phillies Close Set At Los Angeles Dodgers
    By: Jeff Grant

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers (+115, 7)

The Philadelphia Phillies are running away with the National League East Division and will likely continue to extend their lead in facing the subpar Los Angeles Dodgers. Wednesday’s first pitch for the series finale is scheduled for 12:10 p.m. (PT) at Dodger Stadium.

Philadelphia extended its lead to 8½ games over the Atlanta Braves with a 5-3 victory against the Dodgers Monday night in the series opener. The victory marked the Phillies' 10th in 11 games and their 14th of the last 21 meetings in the series, outscoring the Dodgers by a 98-73 margin.

The club has had little trouble matching up with teams out of the NL West, compiling an 81-43 record against the division since the start of the 2008 season.

Rookie Vance Worley (8-1, 2.35 ERA) has earned a spot in arguably the best pitching rotation in baseball and has led the club to nine consecutive victories. He tallied a 9-2 road win over the Giants last time out, giving up two runs and seven hits over seven frames.

Worley has been solid in eight road appearances (six starts) during the 2011 campaign, entering with a 4-1 mark and 2.52 ERA, surrendering just three home runs in 39 1/3 innings. He has won four consecutive decisions away from Citizens Bank Park.

He will be facing the Dodgers for the first time in his career and will try to solve his daytime problems in the process. The right-hander is 1-1 with a 5.29 ERA in three outings under the sun compared to a perfect 7-0 mark and 1.60 ERA in 12 nighttime appearances (10 starts).

Total bettors will find that the ‘over’ is 4-1 in his last five starts overall.

Los Angeles has a large mountain to climb in hopes of getting back into the playoff race, dropping 10 games back in the NL West standings after Monday’s loss. The Dodgers came into the series one of the hottest home teams in baseball, winning nine of 13.

The club managed to collect 13 hits in the series-opening loss, with All-Star outfielder Matt Kemp singling twice. He failed to drive in a run in those opportunities and has gone five games without an RBI, which is surprising as he ranks third in the league with 84 RBI.

Chad Billingsley (10-9, 4.17 ERA) has fallen into quite a pattern by alternating wins and losses over his last seven outings. He comes in off a 7-4 road win over the Diamondbacks, giving up three runs and seven hits over six innings.

The right-hander has performed well at home this year, posting a winning 5-4 record and 2.88 ERA, as opponents are hitting just .226 against him. In five career starts versus the Phillies, Billingsley is 1-2 with a 3.19 ERA, including a 2-0 loss in Philadelphia in his only start against them last year (6 IP, 2 ER).

Home plate umpire Laz Diaz has seen an average of 6.78 runs scored in his 23 games behind the plate this year, leading the ‘under’ to a 14-8-1 mark.

Weather forecasts suggest a perfect day to play baseball, with game-time temperatures in the low-70s and a southwester

Wednesday’s Streaking And Slumping Starting Pitchers

      STREAKING

Rick Porcello (11-6, 4.49 ERA), Detroit Tigers

This righty is taking advantage of some great run support from his teammates. Detroit is averaging 6.8 runs per game in Porcello’s last six trips to the bump. Not surprising, the Tigers are 6-0 during that streak.

Porcello has been good but not great. He owns a 4.39 ERA over his last six appearances but he’s delivered quality starts in four consecutive outings.

Ivan Nova (10-4, 3.81 ERA), New York Yankees

Here’s another hurler picking up wins like it George Clooney picks up hot ass. Nova is 6-0 with a 3.18 ERA over his last seven starts, including a dominating performance last week against the White Sox. The 24-year-old right-hander struck out 10 and allowed one run in 7 2/3 innings of work.

"That might be as good as we've seen him all year," Yankees manager Joe Girardi told reporters after the game. "This start and Cincinnati. He was excellent tonight. His slider, again, made a huge difference for him."

      SLUMPING

Ubaldo Jimenez (6-9, 4.64 ERA), Cleveland Indians

Cleveland traded for an ace but that’s not what baseball bettors have seen from Jimenez over the last couple weeks. The former Colorado hurler is 0-1 with an 11.45 ERA and a 2.36 WHIP (walks + hits per inning) over his last three starts.

The poor results have been somewhat of a mystery considering Jimenez is hitting 95 to 97 mph on the radar gun with his fastball.

“My problem was I couldn’t command my fastball,” Jimenez told the Cleveland Plain Dealer about his first start for the Indians. “It was moving too much. I could only throw a breaking ball for a strike in the first three innings.”

Gio Gonzalez (9-9, 3.10 ERA), Oakland Athletics

It’s been three straight brutal trips to the bump for Gonzalez. The southpaw hurler is 0-3 with an 8.81 ERA and a 2.20 WHIP over his last three appearances and the over is 6-0 in his last six starts.

        HOT LINES

        Wednesday's Best MLB Bets

Philadelphia Phillies at Los Angeles Dodgers (+115, 7)

If you’re looking for holes in Philadelphia’s starting rotation, you’re going to be searching for a while. After Roy Halladay, Cliff Lee and Roy Oswalt have their way with you, then you have to deal with young stud Vance Worley.

The rookie hasn’t lost a game since May 29 and is working on a 2.35 ERA in 84 1/3 innings pitched this year while compiling an 8-1 record.

"It is almost like a dream come true to be on a staff with these guys," Worley told reporters after holding the Giants to just two runs over seven innings in his latest win. "I grew up watching these guys, and to see them all come together on one staff and just have me the fifth guy it is cool but I'm trying not to get in their way."

Worley took a line drive off the leg in that outing but it doesn’t sound like he’ll be hampered in Wednesday’s outing.

With Philadelphia winning nine of its last 10 road games, we’ll happily jump on the road chalk here.

        PICK: Philadelphia

Pittsburgh Pirates at San Francisco Giants (-145, 7.5)

The Pirates finally snapped a 10-game losing streak on Monday, but you have to wonder if this plucky bunch is running out of steam down the stretch.

They still sat tied for seventh overall in the MLB money standings, having earned the club’s supporters just over seven units heading into Tuesday’s action and did make some solid moves ahead of the trade deadline.

Whether they’ll continue to be a money-making team down the stretch remains to be seen, though this isn’t the series to start rolling the dice on the Pirates.

Both of Wednesday’s starters have struggled lately with Pittsburgh’s Jeff Karstens coming off a nine-run debacle against the impotent Padres. San Francisco’s Jonathan Sanchez gave up five earned runs and a pair of homers in a 4 2/3 innings in a loss to Philadelphia his last time out.

        PICK: Over

Wednesday’s Betting Tips: Angels’ Rookie SP Debuts vs. NYY

          Who's Hot

MLB: The over is 18-7-1 in San Diego’s last 26 games overall.

MLB: Colorado is 8-2 in its last 10 games in Cincinnati.

          Who’s Not

MLB: San Diego has won just six of its last 19 games as a visitor against the New York Mets.

MLB: Pittsburgh was 1-10 in its last 11 and 4-14 in its last 14 meetings with San Francisco.

          Key Stat

64.7 – Over the last month, MLB road favorites had won 64.7 percent of their games (77-42).

          Injury That Shouldn’t Be Overlooked

Carlos Beltran, San Francisco Giants – Beltran sat out for the second straight day Tuesday and an MRI revealed a strained right wrist. He is considered day-to-day and his status for the rest of the week is questionable. "As soon as I feel like I can swing the bat, I will be out there," Beltran told reporters. "There's injuries that allow you to go out there and be under control, but the wrist -- swinging the bat, that's a huge part of the game, and throwing the ball is a huge part of the game."

          Game Of The Day

Milwaukee Brewers at St. Louis Cardinals (-125, 8.5)

          Notable Quotable

"It's definitely a lot tougher than it was three months ago. There are moments when you think 'what's happening here, what's going on?' But this is always what I wanted to do. When you grow up and dream of being a professional golfer and dream of winning Majors, all you really think about is the golf and playing in front of great crowds on unbelievable courses, winning trophies. You never think about the other side of it and that is the side that takes a bit of getting used to.” – Rory McIlroy about his increased popularity and public exposure following his first Major title in June. McIlroy, who plans to take up his PGA Tour card next season, is pegged as a +1000 favorite to win the PGA Championship.

          Tips And Notes

The Los Angeles Angels are turning to rookie right-hander Garrett Richards to take Joel Pineiro’s spot in the rotation in his MLB debut. Richards is 12-2 with a 3.03 ERA and 100 strikeouts in Double-A ball this season. The 23-year-old relies on a mid-90s fastball, a curveball, changeup and slider. Oddsmakers have yet to set a line for Wednesday's matchup.

The San Diego Chargers will be without starting running back Ryan Matthews for Thursday’s preseason game against Seattle. Matthews is dealing with a slight muscle strain in his upper leg and this has to be concerning after he missed four games last season and took just 158 carries. Mike Tolbert will see an expanded role Thursday for the Chargers, who are set as 3.5-point favorites against Seattle with 35-point total on the board.

Andy Murray’s Rogers Cup title defense ended abruptly Tuesday when he dropped a 6-3, 6-1 decision to South African Kevin Anderson in just 69 minutes. Wednesday’s action features Novak Djokovic, Gael Monfils, Jo-Wilfried Tsonga, Rafael Nadal and Juan Martin Del Porto all set as solid favorites in their second-round matchups.

            Hondo

The Rockies and Brewers took care of some very important business for Hondo last night, racking up vital victories that cut the debt to 1,955 amalfitanos.

Tonight, Mr. Aitch will pester Harang for some help against the Metamucils -- 10 units on the Pods. Also, he is counting on the Rockies to steal a win from Leake in Cincy -- 10 units on Millwood.
