          SPORTS WAGERS

N.Y. Mets First Five Innings +128

Laying juice with Jason Marquis is bad strategy because he’s no good and he’s going to give up runs. In two starts since joining the Snakes against the Astros and Giants, Marquis has been tagged for 19 hits and 15 runs (11 earned) in eight innings. He couldn’t get Houston or San Fran batters out and before that he faced the Dodgers, Houston again, Pittsburgh, the Angels and Seattle. Of the 48 batters he faced since joining the D-Backs, 23 of them safely got on base. He was lousy last year, he had a few good starts with the Nats this year but it was all on account of luck. The D-Backs are a .500 team versus lefties and will face a good one here in Chris Capuano. In 134 innings, Capuano has walked just 41 while striking out 110. He has a low line-drive rate of 16% (league average is 21%) and that’s should bode well at this park. The D-Backs are hot with five wins in a row and they’ve scored 35 runs over that span but they’ve also faced five weak pitchers (Jordan Lyles, Henry Sosa, Brett Myers, Mike Pelfrey and Dillon Gee). Arizona is an overachieving club that has somehow managed to win a lot more games than they’ve lost. They’ve also come back from a lot of large deficits and it’s for that reason combined with the Mets shaky pen that will play this one in five innings. Play: N.Y. Mets in the first five innings +128 (Risking 2 units).

          Detroit –1½ +121

The O’s are 11-25 versus lefties, they’ve lost three in a row and six of seven and they’ll send out newly acquired Jo-Jo Reyes, who they picked up off the waiver wire on August 1. His first start with the Orioles was a lot like his 20 starts with the Blue Jays and his 57 other career starts – not very good. He did not strike out a single batter and he surrendered two jacks in just four innings of batting practice. In fact, in three of his last five starts he did not strike out a batter. Reyes has a BAA of .305, a 1.59 WHIP and in one previous start against the Tigers this season he was tagged for five runs in seven innings. The Tigers have won 14 of 21 games on the road versus lefties. Doug Fister has not struck out a batter in two starts since joining the Tigers. However, he struck out nine Orioles in 7.1 innings this season and overall in 20 IP against BAL he’s struck out 16 batters. The Tigers are in a much better frame of mind too and after two close games the past two days, this one has blowout written all over it. Play” Detroit –1½ +121 (Risking 2 units).
