Choo-Choo Charlie Morton of the Pirates says: ‘I'm starting to figure out who I am as a pitcher. You look at the numbers, the lefties have been a problem. I need to make an adjustment. I can't rely on facing righties for the rest of my career. I got to figure out how to get lefties out.’ Given that other than Prince Fielder, Milwaukee’s best hitters are right-handed, he can figure it out today by pitching around Fielder. In seven of Morton’s last eight starts, the Pirates have scored 3 runs or fewer and the one time they got more than 3, it was only 5. He has a string of 15 consecutive scoreless innings pitched entering this game. Shaun Marcum is 10-3 this season. His 3.63 ERA (and very nice 1.14 WHIP) has allowed him to overcome similar lack of support – the Brewers have scored four runs or fewer in his last six wins.

Nothing in Jo-Jo the Yo-yo’s recent past indicates that Mr. Reyes should be in control against the Tigers’ lineup: a 5.49 ERA, 1.59 WHIP, and 23 hits and 19 runs allowed in his last three starts, which totaled only 13 2/3 innings. Doug Fister was pitching for Seattle when the season began. In home starts there, he could get away with being a non-strikeout type of pitcher. So far, in 9 innings of work for Detroit – where home starts also favor pitchers -- he has zero strikeouts and zero walks. His routine was messed up in his last start, when he pitched only 2 innings and did not return after a rain delay. Those two innings weren’t going well, by the way – 4 hits, 2 runs – and that was on the road at Cleveland.

SAN FRANCISCO (Vogelsong) -125 over FLORIDA (Volstad)

The Giants got a badly needed win behind Tim Lincecum yesterday, and they have a good shot
at taking today's rubber game. Ryan Vogelsong has been remarkably effective since joining the
rotation (+$405, 2.58 ERA in 19 starts) and he should fare well against a Florida team that has
posted heavy losses vs. righthanders in this park (-$1870). Chris Volstad checks in with a bloated
5.58 ERA after 20 starts, and the Marlins have dropped 8 of their last 10 (-$710). With the NL
West up for grabs, we like the visitor at this price.
